FAQs

What is streaming? What are the chart rules regarding streaming?

For streaming and chart rules related FAQs read the pinned thread regarding this.

How many streams equals one download sale?

100 plays if you are on Spotify Premium, or 600 if you are using the ad-supported free tier. However you cannot simply play a song that many times in one day to give it one sale, you are limited to 10 plays per day in terms of what counts to the chart. The number changes to 200 or 1200 plays when a song moves to ACR. For more information on the rules of ACR see this thread.

How much does streaming contribute to the chart?

Streaming contributes over 90% to the singles chart as a whole. Spotify counts for at least half of this, with Apple Music and Amazon also big contributors. YouTube is also big however most of YouTube's streams are at the free tier so won't count for as much.

Why is my fave not doing well?

Is it being promoted on a major curated playlist, and/or going viral on TikTok? If it isn't, it's unlikely to really take off! Hot Hits UK is the biggest of these playlists on Spotify from a UK standpoint. The playlist usually updates itself to include breaking hits once or twice a week, though there is no guarantee that your fave will get a place on the playlist. Also, the UK Top 50 is a largely followed playlist and that songs often experience a 'top 50 effect', when they enter the top 50 and get the additional exposure of being on the playlist. Often sales hits don't cross over to being streaming hits, this is usually the case for songs with an older target audience, reality or campaign songs. Also keep in mind that it often takes longer for a song to take off on Spotify than it would on iTunes.

My fave didn't debut high and is falling already, does this mean they're flopping?

Not necessarily. Most songs debut relatively low as they aren't instantly well-known, and experience a sharp decline on Day 2 as they no longer have the promoted 'New Music Friday' effect. A lot of songs manage to recover through gaining popularity and additions to playlists. Exceptions to the rule of course come from massively hyped releases, such as the recent album impacts from Drake and Taylor Swift.

Spotify

How do I see today's Spotify chart?

To see the daily top 50 update on desktop, log in to Spotify, click 'Browse', then click 'Charts', then click 'United Kingdom Top 50', or click the link below. For the full top 200, use the link below to go to Spotify's website. You can also use the Kworb website which displays the data in an easier to read format and also contains additional information, however this is often out of date.

What are the most influential Spotify playlists?

Links to Spotify's top playlists are as below.

Hot Hits UK

New Music Friday

Today's Top Hits

How often does the Spotify chart update?

It should update once every day, usually in the early afternoon - although on occasion there will be a delay.

What do the numbers mean?

The streaming figures cited in the daily chart are the number of streams each song received the previous day. Unlike the iTunes chart, Spotify is not a rolling chart so the numbers will only change once per day.

Apple Music

How do I see today's Apple Music chart?

You can use the link below to view the Apple Music top 200 through Kworb. If you have Apple Music, you can also view the top 200 by going to the Charts section and clicking on See All in the Top Songs section.

Quick recovery for the legacy act 😆 Nothing anymore should be written off on day one or two, or even week one or two. There is a new status quo going on in terms of how long it takes people to adapt

Just wanna say that while the urge to be a prophet of doom is at an all time high, often times things aren't as good or bad as they seem. Just go to the end of the June 2021 streaming thread and see a

"Azizam" sounds massive, #1 on NMF - will see if insta-added to HHUK when it updates in 30 minutes.

Really sounds massive to you?

Just... there. Not evolving, not even a C-part, for the whole time the song sound the same, and I don't really hate him, but I really don't think it sounds massive but I might be wrong?

Anyway, it will be added to HHUK and I'm sure straight to number 1 anyway.

Dare I say it, Azizam is kinda Ed's best in a while (since 2017)

It's his best single since "Bad Habits" and "Shivers" for sure. Very catchy and the verses are quite solid. The song fits perfectly into the streaming era. With some playlist support, which he's sure to get, I can see it doing very well.

I do think it will do well, I just don't think it sounds massive :)

Ed #3 on HHUK,

Miley's "End of The World" also added at #14 to HHUK. Also added at #2 on NMF. Really like the song - think it could be a nice sized hit for Miley!

Edited by Envoirment

HHUK Updated and Ed is number 3, huge support as we expected.

Miley also a tight in! And quite high. (14)

Ed added at #1 on Today's Hits Apple Playlist & Miley added at #10. Should see them both fly up the chart.

Ed also added at #1 on Amazon's Hits UK playlist & #2 All Hits Playlist. Miley not added to the former, but added to All Hits at #8. They're also both added to various other playlists in similar posiitons. They will both climb up Amazon pretty quickly I would assume!

Also random note: "The Giver" reaching a new peak of #3 on Amazon I believe?

Not sure what to make of the Ed Sheeran song just yet. Could be a massive hit potentially but will have to see how it sounds after a few times

Same. Whilst it will no doubt do well week 1 and probably be a stable hit, it doesn’t sound like a long running #1 like Bad Habits or Shivers IMO. Think it might be another few weeks of Ordinary at the top.

But that's how you make a catchy song, with a chorus repeated again and again, it's the same blueprint as Peru. It's also a blessing in disguise if you are good at making catchy melodies but not so good at storytelling in songwriting.

I'm actually shocked Ed's not #1 on HH, was expecting more support.

He's also "only" #2 at TTH behind... That's so True ☠️

I would think Ed needs a significant social media buzz (+physical sales) to beat Alex Warren, we'll see what happens.

I kind of disagree tbh, it sounds massive and I think it will do huge numbers and be #1 comfortably, happy to be proved wrong though

Ed's very chart savvy and this feels like his main pop comeback after his last albums went down a different route so expecting it to be a #1 at some point with ease!

Miley's track also sounds like it could really take off and become a hit for her - so we should see some changes in the singles chart next week.

Unsure if Ed will debut at #1 on Spotify iirc Bad Habits didn't right but that didn't stop it from being as huge as that was i'm sure he knows exactly what he's doing!

Azizam sounds huge, and a hit. It’s basically all his hit recipes merged into one, so it’ll do exactly how his previous hits did.
