3M WW? first day of a comeback single? with a huge support? It's like top 25 on Spotify, stop saying it's not bad. His last 2 albums did poorly also, it's not just a one-time thing.

I like Azizam and I'm fine with him but stop reacting like he's still a superman as he was 3 albums ago. He's just not.

Not really considering only alex and chappell have had days over 600k , this year Spotify streams are clearly down across the board and people need to be more realistic with expectations 🤣🤣

Quick recovery for the legacy act 😆 Nothing anymore should be written off on day one or two, or even week one or two. There is a new status quo going on in terms of how long it takes people to adapt

Just wanna say that while the urge to be a prophet of doom is at an all time high, often times things aren't as good or bad as they seem. Just go to the end of the June 2021 streaming thread and see all the forecasts of pessimism on day 1 for what turned out to be the biggest hit of the year. The idea that everything is dependent on early figures doesn't really apply with infinite shelf life, and performance 6, 12, 60 months down the track affects the bottom line more. Maybe not as fun but it's true.

Or if you will, an example. Dua Lipa releases "Don't Start Now", huge smash, no one's denying this. 33 weeks in the global Spotify top 10, keeps bobbing up there and has appeared on the chart as recently as late 2024, 5 years after release. 4 years later she releases "Houdini". Sceptics come out in full force. It only manages 1 week in the global Spotify top 10, after 36 weeks it's out of the top 200, never to return, sounds like an absolute failure. And yet you compare the two over the first 18 months. "Don't Start Now" managed about 1.5 billion streams, "Houdini" 0.8 billion. No doubt it's a decline, but way too fine a gap to measure between a smash and an underperformance, and also I think a far smaller gap than most would have thought. In any case those regular sized hits can be the exception that proves the rule. Expecting every new lead single to hit in the same way is to take credit away from those past hits and how much they resonated.

Heck bad habits didn't even debut at number 1 and didn't even do 600k on day 1 and went on to be one of the biggest songs of all time 🤷

No doubt Ed Sheeran is a legacy artist at this point if we’re being real but I’m sure he can still get a hit here or there if it takes off

We're definitely in the era of the slow burner, even moreso than four years ago when Bad Habits debuted AND Ed was still not far out of his imperial phase. It makes no sense to judge anything based on the first day anymore, even for superstars. Underperforming first day/week was bandied about here for Die With A Smile, and look how big that ended up being.

No.1 debuts are getting more and more rare and the public are sometimes taking ages to get into things, even from bigger artists. Especially when the incumbent No.1 is one of the strongest we've had for the best part of a year in sales terms, it won't be easily overcome by a new release unless it's something like a new Taylor Swift/Harry Styles lead single.

The market is continuing to grow, but the biggest songs are quite a bit smaller compared to the overall market than in the past, people are listening to a far wider spread of music (much of it old catalogue stuff) and are not congregating around the same few songs as much anymore, outside Christmas, anyway. So it doesn't surprise me that it's getting harder to break through the existing noise on day one.

Nah no way. He's in decline for sure but not quite that level! He's probably looking at a top 5 debut which despite a previous track record of insta number ones is still nothing to sneeze at...

This is an insane take when the = album had six top 10 hits (+ Celestial, Merry Christmas, Afterglow, Peru and Bam Bam feature on various editions of it), and the only single pushed from - was a #1 hit.

I know Autumn Variations happened in the middle but I think it's fair to say that wasn't released with much expectation commercially, especially on the single side of things - American Town wasn't released before the album, had weak playlisting, no physicals and no official music video.

There's no reason to write Ed off even if there's a reasonable expectation for him to perform less well, off the bat, than with Bad Habits and Eyes Closed.

Yall gotta admit, its a great prank for spotify to leave us waiting like this, making us turn on each other

The belated April Fool lol

Some muppet at Spotify is reclining in their chair and eating popcorn looking at this thread. If this is how heated it gets here waiting for data imagine the offices at the Official Charts Company 🤣

Yeah their surge in popularity has been incredible to witness!

Miley #48 and PinkPantheress #81 also

As an Ed fan, I’m not sure there’s a lot of positives to take from that debut tbh.

I do think it sounds like a hit and could potentially grow to be big, but a weaker debut than I was expecting.

I said it yesterday, that's a very weak debut. 300K.

AMAZING for Sleep Token! Without TTH and HHUK!

Crazy, #3 in the US, and super close to number 1. Their album gonna do some NUMBERS next month everywhere.

BTW Ed is #60 in the US...
