June 4, 20251 yr Oh Miley :( She could’ve easily had the #1 (albeit on low sales still) if her team played the game. She’ll be lucky to keep top 5 at this rate
June 4, 20251 yr I wonder which Skye Newman song we’ll get for the next Now album? I hope Family Matters appears on Now 121 but I have a feeling they’ll save it for Now 122 and include Hairdresser on Now 121
June 4, 20251 yr I’ve still never seen any mention of this Skye Newman outside of chart discussions, does she actually exist? How is she so high in the charts?
June 4, 20251 yr oh my Miley barely added 1K since Mondayvery nice so far for Matt Berninger, he's the singer with The National <3 His first solo album peaked at #21 so hopefully this one goes at least top 20

Hairdresser has been about a while and labels / artists often go round record labels before the release of a track to see what they think especially Radio 1 and they obviously liked what they heard alongside Hairdresser having a moment so booked her for the introducing stage. I strongly believe there’s no such thing as an industry plant, how would it even work because people have to actually like the music being put out and the person needs some sort of following for hype etc…
June 4, 20251 yr I only ever see "industry plant" used for someone who's probably making noise in circles outside your own...! I hadn't heard of Skye before Hairdresser made the UK top 100 but then I almost never use TikTok, so I wouldn't have expected to come across someone who I assume is making most of her waves there.

The person I always point at is Katy Perry during her 143 era. She had all the backing and promotion that anyone else had, she had playlist support, she had big advertising. She made big viral moments. And it fell flat because ultimately nobody wanted the music. You cant make the public listen to anybody

You cant make the public listen to anybodyThat’s not exactly the same considering all the negative press she had online and ageism is a factor. It’s much easier to break a new artist by throwing everything at them and treating them like they’ve already made it than to revive an “aging” pop star’s career. It just doesn’t feel like genuine popularity, I’m not seeing real people talking about her. If you search her name on Twitter there’s barely anything about her and the few tweets there are have like 2 likes. It just seems odd to me.
June 5, 20251 yr Bear in mind that unless you're deep in the trenches of TikTok & other social media with a genuinely open mind about these things, it's totally normal to have not gotten across someone's breakthrough moment while it's happening. Exhibit: These are the last.fm stats for Olivia Rodrigo's "drivers license", on Jan 14th, 2021 (less than a week after release), and nowI'll accept some data imperfection as it's likely that people have made accounts in the past 4 years who were in fact onto the song straight away, but for a platform that generally exhibits itself to be ahead of the curve, that's still only about 6% of its lifetime listeners were there on week one (also a reminder that the song was doing 13 million streams a day on Spotify at this point). It's not so weird to be part of the 94%!(Also to anyone who thinks an immediate lifetime cap on contributing streams will help new songs on the chart, peep that 12 scrobbles per person ratio that Olivia was already holding after 5 days. That replay-ability is what's making these smash hits happen).
June 5, 20251 yr Ed has made signed posters with purchase of his album available again on his website and indie stores - guessing his team are taking a chance of nabbing the #1 again?

Has anyone ever been confirmed as an industry plant?Saying that, it is a little odd how Skye seems to have just come out of nowhere - by all accounts she hadn't released anything at all before 'Hairdresser' - but as has been said, maybe most of us just aren't in the right circles to be hearing about her.
