Ethel Cain's official second album, which is a prequel to 2022's Preacher's Daughter, will finally be out in August.

She's just released the first single, Nettles, which is absolutely stunning.

I need to give Perverts another listen – I don't think it was really for me on first listen, but Preacher's Daughter is one of my favourite albums of the last few years so I can't wait for this. She's so great at world-building, and the fact Nettles is all self-produced, mixed, and solely written by her is so impressive.

Can't stop listening to Nettles, it really is breathtaking. It reminds me in places of Hard Times, one of my absolute favourites of hers.

Those 8 minutes fly by, I could get lost in the soundscape for hours. Can't wait for the rest of the album.

I was a bit late to getting into Ethel's material, and admittedly her folk entries didn't quite hit me as hard as some other artists, but the storytelling and darker, atmospheric sound on Preacher's Daughter was brilliant and Perverts was a fantastic piece of left-field unsettling experimentation, clearly someone with a lot of ideas.

This is sounding wonderful on first listen, amazing instrumentation and atmosphere throughout and even more impressive given she produced it all herself, I also see she used the synths of Angela Badalamenti from the Twin Peaks soundtrack <3

I was going to try and not overplay this before the album arrived but that’s proving impossible. I can’t stop listening. It’s genuinely one of the most stunning songs I’ve ever heard, so many gorgeous melodies sprinkled throughout 😭

Nettles has got me balling 💔 I recently lost my cat of 16 years and the lyrics just hit me so hard.

Easily my song of the year now, still can’t stop listening to it. I’m not sure I’m ready for the full album, I’ll be a wreck 😭
