The UK Top 40 singles of the 1980s: listening sessions + polls: next session 8 Nov

Featured Replies

Prince And The Revolution - Raspberry Beret

Kate Bush - Running Up That Hill

Bonnie Tyler - Holding Out For A Hero

Huey Lewis And The News - The Power Of Love

Jennifer Rush - The Power Of Love

Can't ignore the opportunity for two songs of the same title in my votes x (Red Box, Midge Ure, Colonel Abrams and Billy Idol also close)

Tiebreak:

Both on about the same level, but going with Trans-X - Living On Video as the slightly more inspired one

We are back at 4pm tomorrow! Quite an accumulation of bonuses to get through in the first couple of sessions, but we'll still cover 7 weeks of 1983 in each.

Thought Jennifer Rush would get zero nominations as its quite a strong field.

BEST 5

Midge Ure - If I Was

Baltimora - Tarzan Boy

Colonel Abrams - Trapped

Rene And Angela - I'll Be Good

Madonna - Angel

NEXT 3

King - Alone Without You

Stevie Wonder - Part-Time Lover

Jennifer Rush - The Power Of Love

The top 2 are absolute classics for me. Tarzan Boy gets some stick for being a novelty song but it isn't so much different to St. Elmo's Fire in production. Colonel Abrams - Trapped is a well produced track and influential for late 80s dancepop and house. Rene and Angela - I'll Be Good has aged well and has a very cool production. Angel by Madonna is a catchy song and better than her tracks Dress You Up and Gambler.

King have another good track but more stadium rocky this time compared to Love and Pride. Part Time Lover is catchy and Jennifer Rush goes back to a nostalgic style vocal for a ballad with older crossover appeal.

TIEBREAK

Trans-X - Living on Video - both tracks are good but this one sounds more influential to 90s dance in particular.

Really not a strong week, all songs I already knew. Next best that I already knew would be Huey Lewis And The News 'The Power Of Love', and the best discovery was probably Nik Kershaw I guess but nothing really that sticks out as being particularly memorable.

Trans-X for the tiebreak.

Much better than last week - although still enough songs that I already knew and loved to crowd out any discoveries ('Cities In Dust' was a BuzzJack discovery though, just through BJSC a few years ago). Next best songs I already knew were The Waterboys, Kate Bush and Sade and the best discoveries were The Alarm, Echo & The Bunnymen and The Smiths.

Grace Jones - Slave To The Rhythm

Kate Bush - Cloudbusting

Far Corporation - Stairway To Heaven

The Waterboys - The Whole Of The Moon
