June 23Jun 23 Thanks for running this Rich, it's been a joy to follow along and listen to all the songs each day! The insightful reviews will be timeless for years to come!
June 23Jun 23 “Pure Shores” will forever be my #1 but “Groovejet” and “Toca’s Miracle” are both wonderful examples 2 worlds colliding and produce something rare and magical. Thanks Rich!
June 23Jun 23 I'll take top 3 for 'Pure Shores' in a strong electronic field although it's my favourite of the year William Orbit's production and All Saints' dreamy vocals are a match made in heaven once again. 'Groovejet (If This Ain't Love)' is also my runner-up so snap there at least *.* love the house grooves, strings, percussion and of course Sophie's distinctive vocal delivering the romantic lyrics. I'm so pleased that they clinched the U.K. #1 spot in the end. Fragma is still a great winner and would be within my top 10 of the whole year too <3 'Toca's Miracle' is the first song I can actually remember from the time. It's scary how well both 'Toca Me' and 'I Need A Miracle' fit together... a perfect mash-up!Aw at Madison Avenue not getting much love in the thread aside from yourself, I think it's great too. A really stacked top 5.To pivot away from dance music... 'Stan' is Eminem's best song for me. The storytelling is so vivid and hard-hitting. Love the intense beat and sample choice too.Thank you for putting this together, Rich! I enjoyed the swift pace, your commentaries and reading the responses from others.
June 23Jun 23 good rundown down the lower end - I'd drop the Billie and Westlife's down a bit, and bump Madonna and Geri a bit higher, but more or less it's quite similar to my list of chart-toppers.
June 23Jun 23 Higher up the list we divert a bit, with A1 and Manics a bit flattered, and Rock Dj/Beautiful Day a bit low. I'd bung them in the top 20 in favour of S Club, Leanne dropping out. So how does the top 20 go up next......Rise would be top 10 easily for me, but Craig and Mdonna are fine down t'lower end. Ronan ditto is easily top 10 for me, prob top 5, but Modjo and Craig 2 are decent enough, but they'd be down the lower end of the 20. Eminem fine where it is, Sonique top 5 for me. Oops is about right I think, Mel C I'd drop out the 10, (I Turn To You) and swap with britney (Lisa Lopes). Black Coffee is another nice one that I rate 10 places lower maybe, while Breathless would be way lower. Stan needs to be top 10, it'd prob fall short of my top 5 though.Madison Avenue is fun, but overplay annoyed me a bit at the time and wouldnt be top 20. Pure Shores, yes def top 5 and 3 sounds about right actually, behind Sonique and Groovejet. Toca's Miracle def top 10 for me but not top 5.So all in all lots of agreement, great list! I tend to like Rockpop a bit more and singalongpop a bit less, and that's about it 👍
June 23Jun 23 Gosh you commit when you do a countdown don't you? I hadn't even noticed it had begun and you're finished 😆Broadly speaking I would be on a similar line to you, although there's a few you rank much higher than I do. If I was doing this I'd probably go for this as my top 10:01 All Saints - Black Coffee02 All Saints - Pure Shores03 Eminem - Stan04 Spiller - Groovejet (If This Ain't Love)05 Sonique - It Feels So Good06 Destiny's Child - Independent Women Part I07 Madonna - Music08 Gabrielle - Rise09 Madison Avenue - Don't Call Me Baby10 Fragma - Toca's MiracleParticularly please you also really like Don't Call Me Baby as I think that's often overlooked - and far superior to the much better remembered Modjo track.
June 23Jun 23 Great top 5 here, Stan is indeed a real watershed moment for songwriting and hip hop music, both All Saints number 1s with William Orbit were phenomenal, and the other three are great dance number 1s - there was so much great dance around at the turn of the century and I loved that they could sometimes get turns at the top, just wish there was room for the likes of Darude, Artful Dodger and Zombie Nation amongst others xAnd yeah, I'll also do my own (rough) top 10 because why not xU2 - Beautiful DayAll Saints - Pure ShoresEminem - StanSpiller - Groovejet (If This Ain't Love)Modjo - Lady (Hear Me Tonight)All Saints - Black CoffeeLeAnn Rimes - Can't Fight the MoonlightDestinys Child - Independent Woman Part IMadison Avenue - Don't Call Me BabyRobbie Williams - Rock DJActually a pretty good year overall despite so many of them, most of them have aged decently.
June 23Jun 23 A very high-quality top 10 and excellent write-ups for them all, as my favourite song in this thread, especially enjoyed reading the writeup for Stan, such a hard-hitting track at the top of the charts was a real gem. So many others though, the two All Saints #1s, Groovejet, Sonique, Toca Miracle, all have this really beautiful production quality to them that feels very nostalgic now (as they're all of that era I suppose), this sort of ethereal longingness that just feels great to listen to.Thanks Rich, a really great countdown to read through over the past few days.
June 23Jun 23 This was a fun way to revisit these songs and the unique variety at #1 within one single year! It's perhaps testament to the strength at the top that there were so few #2 peakers in 2000, as that spot was usually taken up by one of the #1s dropping down - very few of them crashed out of sight after a single week at #1.'Stan' is my favourite #1 of the year - even before its single release I remember it being talked up as a standout moment on the album, and the way the story is told really takes the listener through the emotions. That and 'Groovejet' are the remaining ones I bought in their opening weeks, the latter after it had been announced as #2 on Saturday's CD:UK - I was pretty pleased with the chart conclusion the next day. I appreciate the glass of water write-in for 'Don't Call Me Baby' though that and 'Pure Shores' would be a little lower for me - the latter is the one I'm fairly indifferent to that most of Buzzjack seems to love (something of a once per decade occurrence, see also 'Take On Me', 'Frozen', 'Midnight Sky', possibly a 2010s one too but those four are the most extreme), nice production and harmonies but it just kind of drifts by for me and I'd probably rank 'Black Coffee' above it as well as keeping 'Never Ever' as their signature hit. That just leaves 'Toca's Miracle', whose wonderful musical alchemy is soured for me only by its subsequent licensing saga - the re-recording is a game attempt but clearly a different voice - but back in the early 2000s when all seemed rosy, it soundtracked the time perfectly. Thanks Rich for this thread and your write-ups, always a great read!
June 23Jun 23 I shed a tear seeing Spice Girls so low, but I know I’m in a minority who really adores Let Love Lead The Way (those ad libs…) Nice to see you give Same Old Brand New You some positive commentsGreat to see All Saints so high. A lot of great pop songs
June 24Jun 24 Author Thank you for all the lovely comments on this, I've loved reading them all and it's been cool to see other people's ranks too. Quite a few general similarities but for a few songs a lot of people differ on, like Rock DJ.Glad to see some belated love for Don't Call Me Baby. I can't even really explain why I love it so much, it just scratches an itch in my brain I suppose 😆

Friday at 13:521 day The #1s of 2000 that have featured in #ThrowbackThursday series and what I said about them:Don't Call Me Baby:The first song for this week is: 'Don't Call Me Baby' from Australian house music duo Madison Avenue which originally peaked at #30 in the UK, this was re-released of May of 2000 which would peak at #1 in the UK. I do remember seeing the music video for this on Top of The Pops. It is a song that would feature on numerous dance albums. This is still a great tune from Madison Avenue. Day & Night:The first song for this week is a UK #1 from Billie Piper. This was the lead single from her second album 'Walk of Life' It would be Billie's third and final UK #1. I much prefer this to her other two UK #1s. I remember hearing this for some bizarre reason in an episode of Coronation Street in 2002 playing in the background at the Platts house in a scene involving Sarah Platt and Ade Critchley. Breathless:The first song for this week is from: The Corrs with 'Breathless'. This was the first single from their third studio album 'In Blue'. This would go and become their only UK #1. I remember when this came out, I thought they were singing 'Leave me Bradley' instead of 'Leave me breathless'. This is a song that I have in recent years become a staple in my playlist, it's a bloomin brilliant song from them. Don't Give Up:The first song for this week is from: Chicane featuring Bryan Adams with 'Don't Give Up' which was the second single from Chicane's second studio album 'Behind the Sun'. This would go on and become Chicane's first and only UK #1 and Bryan Adams' second UK #1, it would stay at #1 for a week. I find this to be an motivation song for me. I would definitely listen to this rather than Bryan Adam's other #1. Beautiful Day:'Beautiful Day' was the lead single from U2's tenth studio album 'All That You Can't Leav Behind'. This would go on and peak at #1 in the UK becoming U2's 4th UK #1. This in my view was probably one of the best songs that U2 did. I particularly remember this song for being the theme tune to ITV's 'The Premiership' which was shown from 2001 to 2004. Bound 4 Da Reload (Casualty):'Bound 4 Da Reload (Casualty)' would be the debut single from Britsh duo Oxide & Neutrino, later members of So Solid Crew. This sampled the theme tune to the BBC medical drama 'Casualty' and includes a spoken part from the 1998 film Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels which included '"Ah! s**t! I've been shot!/I don't f***ing believe this, could everyone stop getting shot?, This would get to #1 in the UK where it knocked off Fragma's 'Toca's Miracle' off the #1 spot.
