Yesterday at 12:531 day No real losses so far other than the McFly ones. Never a big fan of them, and actually got fed up of them blocking other acts from the top time after time, but those two tracks are still enjoyable. Burn is indeed a borefest.
Yesterday at 13:261 day I really like Obviously, it's one of a few McFly songs (also including Star Girl and All About You) that I have a lot of time for and play willingly. I prefer it to 5 Colours In Her Hair. I think the lovely strings and backing vocals and the general wistful nature of Obviously move it well above average territory.Burn...ugh. A big step down from Yeah - this era was incredibly dull from Usher after the lead single but did so well for him. Give me the 8701 singles any day of the week.Never heard the Sam & Mark song, didn't even realise it was a double a-side. Sounds very Westlife album track to me, so it's a pass. Yesterday at 14:281 day Think I'd have had a lot similar, although I wouldn't have revealed either Mcfly song by this stage
20 hours ago20 hr That Sam and Mark song is rubbish. I don't think I have ever heard it.I remember the kids at my school raving over that 'Babycakes' song. Looking back it was nothing special.Judging by this list, 2004 is not looking like a vintage year for Number 1 singles so far. Edited 20 hours ago20 hr by montyj
8 hours ago8 hr Author 23Nelly - Flap Your Wings (1 week - 11th Sept) 4.7/10Here's another double A side where I'm not aware of t'other side. Flap Your Wings is an altogether more upbeat rap track to the radio play side, as Nelly invites his lady to get her Eagle On after dropping down. No idea what he means, but cushions on the floor might be called for. Bling as per the culture of the time is a thing in the lyrics, and she rattles about his sweat dripping all over her body. I'd advise a packet of wet wipes, myself. It's a tad one-note as a song and there's not much to hook into the brain as an earworm. It comes, and then goes unmemorably. Presumably. The beats and production are fine though, if a tad repetitive.
8 hours ago8 hr Author 22Busted - 3am (2 weeks - 7th August) 4.8/10This is Busted emoting a bit over a relationship bust-up. I dont recall this side of yet another double A with a side that passed me by. There are bits that swerve towards the anthemic and the string riff ending is nice, but mainly one for the fans I think. I was probably feeling generous when I rated this one as I play it again, due to the other side which is way better, as I'd rather hear the Nelly track again actually. It's OK though. With so many of similar quality it's not easy to come to a firm decision even after repeat plays!
8 hours ago8 hr Author 21LMC vs U2 - Take Me To The Clouds Above (2 weeks - 7th Feb) 6/10A leap in quality from here onwards, so this is unlucky not to be in the top 20, but I can't shake my annoyance from the time at LMC having the temerity to turn an anthem into a cheesy dance track. I'm talking about U2 not Whitney. It's nowhere near as classic as the U2 remix of Even Better Than The Real Thing, and it's cheesier than Whitney's original of How Will I Know which I was never a fan of in the first place, and nowhere near as brilliant as the original With Or Without You sampled here. So, template for 2000's big cheesy hit: nick a couple of lines from old 80's hits, sing them adequately to avoid sample fees, and put a very repetitive beat to it and repeat the snippets endlessly. It's OK as a novelty for a while, and at least it's very short. I would expect this to be quite popular generally though, as the U2 backdrop is good and a lot of people love Whitney's 80's stuff. Just not me! That said I'd rather hear this than Whitney's radio staple.

3 hours ago3 hr Feeling more out of step with John’s taste than usual here.No recollection of the Sam & Mark thing but it’s pretty poor. At least it doesn’t have the turgid getting up from stools Westlife factor I guess.“Flap Your Wings” is a tune! OK it’s no “Hot In Herre” but I’d have it a fair bit higher than his other one.“3am” is rather nice - again I’d put it above the other one.“Take Me To The Clouds Above” is a decent reworking - I’d put that in the Top 20.And my trio of horrors is STILL in!
3 hours ago3 hr Love 3AM, one of Busted's best! I saw Nelly live earlier in the year and Flap Your Wings was on the setlist and it was nice to be reminded of it, a fun party track. He didn't perform My Place.I bought LMC vs U2 on single at the time, thought they did a good job with that personally, with a strong vocal.
1 hour ago1 hr LMC fan here, very clever mix of sings that really works.3AM is pretty good by Busted number 1 standards.
40 minutes ago40 min I find the Nelly track woeful and I've never been able to stick the LMC one.'3AM' is way better than the Thunderbirds one for me, which is diabolical.
24 minutes ago24 min 'Take Me To The Clouds Above' is my new favourite to drop out so far. Taking on Whitney is no easy task but Rachel McFarlane gives it a good go.A pretty uplifting mash-up.
