December 12, 2025Dec 12 Perfect Moment is pretty good, a well-made example of that type of TV-related ballad, and Martine was always very engaging and that came over. I still like it, and I'm unlikely to ever get fed up hearing it as it rarely grabs a radio play. It may end up higher in my ratings depending on what is left to come...!
December 12, 2025Dec 12 'If I Let You Go' is a step up from Westlife's debut but still pretty average. Their remaining chart-topper is easily their best #1 of 1999 for me so I approve of your ordering of them.'90s EastEnders is a bit of a blind spot for me, I started watching the show in the 2000s, dipped out of it in the mid-2010s around the time I went to University and then returned a few years ago, when the last executive producer Chris Clenshaw turned it around. I've also watched the first couple of years from the '80s but have probably only seen the boxset of Christmas episodes for the following decade on iPlayer. So I haven't witnessed too much of Tiffany Mitchell in action but her and Grant do seem like quite an iconic pairing from the era. It's a bit unfortunate she was killed off when supposedly just wanting a break. Martine does have a decent voice but 'Perfect Moment' manages to be both cheesy and dull, not my cup of tea.

Pretty much guaranteed it will never get a play on radio oops!My bottom in ABBA songs ranking :91. Move On92. Man In The Middle93. Eagle94. Chiquitita95. Put On Your White Sombrero96. Watch Out97. King Kong Song98. Intermezzo No.199. Arrival100. Fernando
December 12, 2025Dec 12 "If I Let You Go" i for me the best out of the four Westlife songs, but still pretty average. Perfect Moment is quite boring eventhough her voice is good - the production is way to safe. Here come my places 30 - 26:30 911 - A Little Bit More 3/1029 Boyzone - You Needed Me 4/10 (Jewels & Stones Remix 7/10, but only counting the radio versions)28 B*Witched - Blame It On The Weatherman 4/1027 Martine McCutcheon - Perfect Moment 4/1026 Westlife - If I Let You Go 5/10
December 12, 2025Dec 12 I think Martine McCutcheon had an ITV documentary called Martine McCutcheon:This Is My Moment the week that 'Perfect Moment' was released.

December 12, 2025Dec 12 'Swear It All Again' is a bland starting point for Westlife but I also think it's slightly ok at times. Would never choose to listen to it though as far as their songs go. 'If I Let You Go' is an improvement but never been crazy on that either.Quite like the Boyzone cover of 'When The Tough Get's Going.." but also like the track in both versions. Billy's is the top one though.'Perfect Moment' is nice enough but Martine had some better songs to come.
December 13, 2025Dec 13 Author Ronan Keating - When You Say Nothing At AllRank: 6.5/10Reason: We will soon be free of Boyzone/Westlife/Ronan, but not quite. After spending the best part of a decade fronting Boyzone, Ronan was ready to go it alone from the band and the first opportunity (outside of presenting Eurovision 1997 in Dublin anyway) came in summer 1999, with the soundtrack of the blockbuster British romcom Notting Hill. The soundtrack generated a few hits, from the likes of Another Level and Elvis Costello, but When You Say Nothing At All was definitely the main focus and star signing for the soundtrack and sure enough the track was a huge No.1 hit, albeit only spent four weeks in the top ten overall. It was also one of the three No.1 hits that kept Better Off Alone at No.2 but finished lower in the year end chart.A perfectly nice and well sung ballad with some nice instrumentation, it was actually a cover of a country song that was initially a US hit for Keith Whitley, and this formula would serve Ronan well throughout his solo career, as well as Boyzone in their latter 90s career (You Needed Me as mentioned was a country cover, and so was 1998 No.2 hit I Love The Way You Love Me). The country element was not evident here though, the song was turned into a pop ballad with a slightly Celtic lilt, and the video included clips from Notting Hill while Ronan sings the track on a bench. He rejoined Boyzone for one final single in December 1999, Every Day I Love You, and then launched his solo career proper just under a year later, with the actually really good Life Is A Rollercoaster.
December 13, 2025Dec 13 I was glad the song became a hit, but Alison Krauss' tasteful Bluegrass-ey version was just lovely, that should have been a mid-90's hit - so on balance Better that Ronan had a big hit with it as opposed to the song remaining obscure in the UK. Ronan was relatively restrained on his version, so that's a plus. Play Alison to see what it should sound like though! She is invariably wonderful in whatever she does, in or outside Union Station.
December 13, 2025Dec 13 I don't understand your huge love to Alice Deejay. Ronan had the best "without any female vocals" # 1 in 1999 year.UK/Irish boybands were much better than N'Sync and BSB.

I was never that into N'Sync or BSB outside of a few songs each. I have seen Boyzone and BSB live in the last decade and both were very good live. I saw Westlife live once in 2000 as part of a wider indoors multi-act concert and found it quite boring.

December 13, 2025Dec 13 @gooddelta is it just me or does Alison Krauss look a bit like Lyn Scully from Neighbours.
December 13, 2025Dec 13 I quite like When You Say Nothing At All, but I think it's in about the right place. The main thing I can remember about this is that it was my uncles wedding song when he got married in 1999.

December 14, 2025Dec 14 'When You Say Nothing At All' is really nice for me and would be a little bit up though I don't know off by heart everything that's left lol so could be right placement for it even. Notting Hill is a great film too. Also like 'She' from the soundtrack too. Elvis Costello sings great on that.

I liked From The Heart too, one of the better songs from Another Level.
December 14, 2025Dec 14 Author Mr Oizo - Flat BeatRank: 6.5/10Reason: I would imagine this will be the first very contentious rank I have, I know it's popular, sorry! In the 80s and 90s there were countless examples of adverts helping songs to the top of the charts and Levi's jeans for some reason was often particularly successful. For their campaign around this time they enlisted the help of French dance producer Mr Oizo with the instrumental track Flat Beat, memorably featuring the puppet Flat Eric in the very cute and funny video. It's quite amazing that this song was so successful, it's a pretty underground sounding electro house track that has the same bassline looped for basically the entire track. It's quite hypnotic and I can't hate it due to the video and how different it was at the time, and it managed astonishing sales, but it's not a song I put on to listen to ever so just being honest! The track also reached No.1 in Germany, Austria, Finland and Italy but only No.5 in Mr Oizo's homeland of France.
