Can't begrudge giving someone else a chance after The Pogues won the Christmas #2s rate but still an eternal fave so very happy to see it notching another podium finish. The Leona Christmas song is fine but not a major fave. 'I Believe In You' is one of the better Kylie songs for me though + also love both the Jona Lewie and Daniel Bedingfield songs (mildly surprised to see the latter finishing so high but not complaining ofc!)

Christmas number one: Killing In The Name - Rage Against The Machine

Christmas number two: The Climb - Joe McElderry

Lady Gaga had burst onto the scene a year before, and had the biggest selling single of 2009 with “Poker Face”. In October 2009 the electropop anthem “Bad Romnance” had its premiere at Alexander McQueen’s Paris Fashion Week. It then became the lead single from the repackaging of her debut album, “The Fame Monster”.

Due to its unexpected release the single had quite a slow start, entering at #14 before steadily climbing over November and December. It reached #1 both before and after Christmas 2009, but over Christmas was #3 behind the huge selling Joe McElderry vs Rage Against The Machine battle. It went on to be a pure million seller and now has over 2 million combined chart sales.

Christmas number one: Can We Fix It? - Bob The Builder

Christmas number two: What Makes A Man - Westlife

Dido’s song “Thank You” actually dates back to 1998, when it was part of the soundtrack to the film “Sliding Doors”. It then appeared on her 2000 album “No Angel” which was to become one of the biggest selling albums of the decade.

However “No Angel” only took off in 2001 after Dido had gained exposure from “Stan”, which uses the first verse of “Thank You” as its chorus.

Amazingly “Stan” was only the 3rd single from “The Marshall Mathers LP”, and I remember finding it an astonishing track when I heard a friend’s copy of the album in the summer of 2000. It was released the same week as the mighty million seller “Can We Fix It”, and held Bob off in its 1st week only to succumb in Week 2 and then be further knocked down to #3 by Westlife in Christmas week. However it has since been certified 4x platinum. The word “stan” has become a song term for an obsessed fan thanks to the song, though of course it’s not a term we have have any need for on Buzzjack.

Thank you very much everyone for reading, voting and commenting. And thank you @gasman449 for splitting the workload with me and co-running this rate so ably.

All that remains is for me to retrospectively wish you all a very merry Christmas!

A very good top 2! Stan is one of the greatest hip hop songs ever and I'm glad it's liked enough here to win. Thanks Julian for offering the opportunity to co-host and to everyone who participated in any way! Number 4s list will be posted in the Chart Vault very soon.

That is some jump in points to 1st, but not surprising really - 'Stan' is a one of a kind hit, and in the context of being a Christmas #3, it's amazing that it was able to pull such strong sales in that market.

Thanks Julian and gasman for running this!

Great track from gaga , (even though I voted it high am also glad it didnt win as the right song did)

It went number 1 anyway so im not too fussed , the rightful christmas number 1 was only number 2 Joe should of been number 1

Glad Stan won the overall rate, again it had already had its turn at number 1 so not too fussed it didnt get number 1 as Can we fix it is a tune 🙌🙌🙌

Great work @Julian_ and @gasman449 interesting list and be fun to follow

On paper, 'Bad Romance' feels like more of a BuzzJack-friendly winner, but I did notice 'Stan' hoovering up a lot of points during the voting stage, so not too surprised that is the champion in the end! Fantastic top 2, 'Poker Face' converted me into a Gaga fan but the darker Fame Monster stuff made me take even more notice at the time, with 'Bad Romance' leading the way. That is still my favourite song of hers and same with 'Stan' for Eminem, fantastic storytelling and deployment of sample.

Thank you Gasman and Julian for all your work on this, great stuff. happy

Thank you for this chart!

And Stan is a well deserved winner. In hindsight I wanted it to win so should have put it first, above Pogues.

Up now!

Fantastic work Julian thank you. And ending on a bombshell - I never realised that's where the Buzzjack favourite term "stan" originates from!

Definitely the right winner, a unique and brilliant track

Hooray my top pointer winning! (I'd actually forgotten that 'Bad Romance' was the other song still to come lol, very impressive for a rap song to beat that in a BuzzJack poll, even if it is literally 'Stan'). Eminem has put out some garbage over the years but he'll always deserve respect for songs like that.

Thanks for the efforts in running this Julian and gasman x
