December 31, 2025Dec 31 Author I wasn't expecting to start this so soon but I got to finish work early and was in the mood to write while I have a couple of free hours so why not...TOP 100 SONGS: 100-91100. ARGO - Korku | 154 points99. Wet Leg - catch these fists | 155 points98. FKA twigs - Sushi | 156 points97. ROSALÍA - Mio Cristo Piange Diamanti | 158 points96. Cynthia Erivo - Defying Gravity (feat. Ariana Grande) | 159 points95. KennyHoopla - NORTHERN LIGHTS// | 163 points (peak: #13)94. Madison Beer - yes baby | 163 points (peak: #3)93. Oklou & FKA twigs - viscus | 164 points92. Confidence Man & JADE - gossip | 165 points (peak: #13)91. Lemondaze - o(type) | 165 points (peak: #9)The mysterious ARGO highlights the beauty of the BuzzJack Song Contest. @gooddelta's nation FSR Rontvia unleashed their song 'Korku' to the 177th edition back in September. Little is known about this Turkish rock act, with just 78 monthly listeners at the time of typing, but they were plucked from obscurity (courtesy of a New Music Friday playlist) and incredibly finished as high as 2nd in the contest. I helped out this entry as much as I could, with top marks, FSR Rontvia's third consecutive gold from my nation in an unprecedented hot streak. I cannot profess to know much Turkish (although understand the title of this song translates to 'Fear') but I was instantly hooked on the post-punk style drum loop, epic guitars and passionate vocals that become all the more intense as the song builds.A top 40 single unfortunately continues to evade Wet Leg but sophomore album moisturizer was another #1 record for the band. This era was introduced by lead single 'catch these fists' back in April this year. I was pleasantly surprised to hear they'd chosen a dance-punk direction for the instrumental and noted that an idiosyncratic band name team-up of Wet Leg and Viagra Boys now seemed plausible. This refreshed sonic makeover is coupled with lyrics inspired by men who obnoxiously interrupt a girl who is having fun with her friendship circle on a night out, to try and pick her up. The words have bite but are also peppered with humorous Wet Leg wordplay such as "he don't get puss, he get the boot, I saw him sipping on Dark Fruit". What a takedown.2025 was a prolific and slightly confusing year to follow in the world of FKA Twigs. She released her third studio album Eusexua in January to much acclaim and even a top 3 chart placing here! However, later in the year she put out an edited version of Eusexua which removed some of the original track list (justice for 'Girl Feels Good') and slotted in some new songs. In addition to this, she also dropped an entirely new album called Eusexua Afterglow which promised to "extend the high into the afters". Phew. 'Sushi' was an immediate highlight from this project for me. It is like an alt girl update on Craig David's '7 Days' as Twigs excitedly details what her week of dates will look like - of course going for sushi, but also karaoke (her song of choice is revealed as 'Gasolina' by Daddy Yankee) and even heading to Paris. Elsewhere, the line "no, I still can't drive" particularly speaks to me when I had to delay my test until 2026. There is also a callback to the earlier discography highlight 'Glass & Patron' (recently entered to the Bop Idol 5 song contest by @Josh!) with the line "now hold that pose for me". My ultimate highlight of this song is how it morphs into a ballroom breakdown towards the end, which samples a commentator named Precious. That transition is always a rush. I saw someone comparing this song to Beyoncé's 'PURE/HONEY' and can definitely see the vision. That album track was my favourite moment on Renaissance so it makes sense that I would also enjoy the structure of this song quite a bit. This year it was a delight to witness one of my favourite artists ROSALÍA achieving notable commercial success, on top of her usual critical praise. I predicted that she would achieve her first top 40 album in 2025 but never in my wildest dreams did I expect LUX to land in the top 5, just incredible. She is always an ambitious artist but this project included the extra challenging layer of incorporating 14 different languages. I was intrigued to hear 'Mio Cristo Piange Diamanti' as Italian is one of my favourites. This song is about the spiritual union between two people that is not necessarily romantic, as it was inspired by Saint Francis of Assisi and Saint Clare of Assisi, who had a strong, platonic bond. The songwriting is passionate and dramatic from the word go, with the opening lines translating to "you are the most beautiful hurricane that I have ever seen" in English. ROSALÍA plays with religious themes throughout and illustrates her thoughts with poetic imagery. The song opens with lowkey piano playing but evolves throughout, with added flourishes and intense strings in places. Her voice is to die for here, particularly the final note, which is my favourite vocal moment on the whole of LUX. The transition between the end of this song and 'Berghain' is the best segue on the album for me, also.Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande placed at #70 in my 2024 EOY list with 'Defying Gravity' and they're back once more, this time at the lower #96, thanks to its chart run extending into the start of this year. I won't bore you all by repeating my commentary from last time but might as well add that the sequel to this movie, Wicked: For Good, has since come out. Unfortunately, it did not quite live up to the strength of the first film for me, but 'For Good' was an impressive musical moment between the two again, just three spots out from making this year's countdown. Ariana Grande still has more to come thanks to the release of her eternal sunshine: brighter days deluxe album this year too, in another busy year for her career.KennyHoopla is an American musician who was born exactly 1 day after me! I have stayed on top of his music pretty well as his releases are often pushed on my Release Radar playlist. I'm particularly grateful to have spotted and checked out 'NORTHERN LIGHTS//' this year. KennyHoopla, real name Kenneth La'ron Beasley, was inspired by '90s shoegaze and post-rock bands when creating this song, especially mentioning Ride and Sonic Youth as acts who saved his life during a difficult time. He was dealing with the loss of his mum and also becoming an independent artist. 'NORTHERN LIGHTS//' is about achieving what you can with what you have and not necessarily the path that was expected. The most standout lyric to me is "in outer heaven, weightless and hardcore" which illustrates feeling lost in a striking way. I love the psychedelic end result of his muffled vocals mixed with the loud, layered fuzzy guitars and driving percussion.Madison Beer originally caught my attention when she featured on the Europa single 'All Day and Night' back in 2019, a #1 in my personal chart. Her career stretches a lot further back than that, with Justin Bieber endorsing her in 2013, but her own music as the main artist hadn't really grabbed me. However, Madison's dark dance-pop pivot in recent years has been a godsend. 'Make You Mine' was a bit of a slow burner but 'yes baby' immediately hit me. The electropop sound is catnip to my ears so I'm pleased if the Brat era is opening up more artists to experiment with this lane. On top of the pulsating synths, the sensual lyrics are good fun and confidently delivered, plus Madison exudes star quality in the video, even if the backing dancers seem to be doing most of the work! I'll let her off for running on the treadmill in heels. Here's hoping she gets a Sabrina Carpenter-esque break one day as she has all the makings of a big pop girl.French singer, producer and DJ Oklou teamed up with FKA Twigs, back for a second appearance in this section, on a track for the deluxe version of her debut album choke enough. Both of these talented women provided two of my favourite albums of the year so I was unsurprisingly hyped for this team-up. 'viscus' originally existed as an unreleased solo song that had been performed live, but Oklou later called up FKA twigs to invite her on to it as a feature, allowing full creative freedom. I appreciate how vulnerable this collaboration is, alluding to themes like seasonal depression and even body dysmorphia on Twigs' verse, with lines such as "avoiding myself naked in the bath, just to touch my body in the dark" painting a heartbreaking picture. I feel Oklou has already carved out a particular electronic sound, so the main synth is reliably great, but I appreciate the texture of added ambience too. Twigs handing Oklou her much-loved flute in the music video was cinema, also.Another collaboration that filled me with excitement was Confidence Man and JADE coming together! The two acts crossed paths thanks to the Rolling Stone U.K. awards (a magazine I subscribe to) and JADE later debuted the track live at Glastonbury, a month before its release. I'm a big fan of Basement Jaxx and their work appears to be a bit of a template here, which unsurprisingly gets a thumbs up from me. There is definitely a bit of 'Oh My Gosh' in there while the Mexican guitar provides some added drama similar to their highest charting song, 'Rendez-vu'. The acid house elements of the production appeal to me a lot too. The playful lyrics, an ode to the art of gossiping (if only Dot Cotton was still with us), are brimming with sass and get particularly cheeky when JADE drops a c-bomb during the bridge. This meeting of pop and electronic worlds thankfully delivered! This section is book-ended with two songs that received my top marks in the BuzzJack Song Contest. The 179th edition was particularly special to me as I got the chance to host for the first time in 4 years, following victory for my nation Jadakissnia, in BJSC 178. I was suitably impressed by the quality of the entries and my favourite of the lot was 'o(type)' by Lemondaze, sent by @uhsting's nation Sovarasma. This song instantly blew me away with its gazing-at-shoes qualities while I was creating recap videos and remained my best-loved entry throughout the entirety of the contest. It experienced a slow start during the results but finished in a respectable 16th place by the end. The group are inspired by shoegaze royalty Slowdive but also the likes of Radiohead and Wolf Alice. The moody, droning production and muffled vocals during the verses perfectly contrast against the build-up of dramatic guitars, crashing drums and clear "you're still there" delivery in the chorus. The music video is a stunning watch, with its mix of emotive close-ups and outdoor shots in front of towering trees.
December 31, 2025Dec 31 2025 was defo the year of Twigs for me! She was my 3rd most played artist of the year and also my favourite gig that I went to this year. Liam & I couldn’t resist tickets for the O2 show next year for that reason! You’re so right when you say justice for ‘Girls Feels Good’ though. That or Striptease are probably the two best tracks on the album so why get rid?!? At least we have both versions still on streaming, lol. I’m glad you enjoyed Glass & Patron as much as I do!
December 31, 2025Dec 31 I've been out of BJSC this year so missed o(type), so just giving it a listen given you provided the link - not surprised that this is something coming from uhsting, seems very much the sort of thing that would be up their street! The vocals are really nice amidst everything else going on with the instrumentation in the song.

Glad you enjoyed your live experience and I hope you have the best time at the O2 as well just checked my own stats and she was 9th for me this year!Oh yes the (OG) 'Striptease' erasure is also a massive WTF moment!! Less gutted about 'Childlike Things' Thank you for reminding me of it <3 I think I first discovered it on plug.dj before I'd properly got into her!2 hours ago, PeteFromLeeds said:I've been out of BJSC this year so missed o(type), so just giving it a listen given you provided the link - not surprised that this is something coming from uhsting, seems very much the sort of thing that would be up their street! Friday at 21:595 days The first section being bookended by BJSC faves *.* as I posted in the BJSC FM thread yesterday 'Korku' is I think within my top 3 BJSC entries of the year while Lemondaze was also a medallist for me, we endorse shoegaze x I usually associate KennyHoopla more with pop punk but him also delivering a solid shoegaze track in this section. 'catch these fists' was a banger of an era opener from Wet Leg, quickly became my new favourite song to date from them, love the energy in the instrumental. I thought on first listen that 'Sushi' sounded like one that would grow on me, have relistened to all of these songs now and I think I did like it a little more on second listen but still feel like it takes a bit too long to really get good, love the chaotic ending part though and can definitely see the comparison to Beyoncé. More of a fan of 'viscus', twigs slots in well on Oklou's trademark whimsical production. 'Mio Cristo Piange Diamanti' is a stunner and one of my faves from 'LUX', ofc already got to see her live before and similar vocal focused tracks like 'G3 N15' and 'SAKURA' were big highlights of that so this song just makes me really want to see her a second time x 'yes baby' and 'gossip' are both bangers and a real shame neither of them took off chart wise as I don't see why they couldn't have - I suppose Madison Beer has kind of bubbled under feeling like an artist who could have a breakthrough moment for years and it's never really happened, my introduction to her was a couple of pretty obnoxious BJSC entries oops but she has definitely come more into her own in recent years with songs like this and 'Make You Mine' being great fits for her vocal style imo. 'gossip' is my favourite song to date from the solo Little Mix canon (I've found JADE's output quite hit or miss but she nails this one and I'd love to hear more stuff from her going for this throwback Basement Jaxx vibe) and I think my second favourite Confidence Man song to date after 'Better Sit Down Boy', sad that even the JADE name power (and heavy Radio 1 support) couldn't get them a top 100 hit </3My opinion on 'Defying Gravity' hasn't changed since last year but will just use this as an excuse to post that I surprisingly found 'No Good Deed' from the sequel a very compelling listen x

'Korku' represents the best of BJSC for me with an obscure, high quality song performing better than anyone saw coming. Pleased you (and several others) loved it so much too!Shame 'Sushi' isn't quite doing it for you as a full experience but there's still plenty more Twigs to come, I think you will particularly approve of her next appearance...Oh yes I bet 'Mio Cristo Piange Diamanti' would be killer live. She absolutely needs to have that and 'Berghain' next to each other in the set list!Ooh I need to revisit 'Better Sit Down Boy' now you've brought it up as I forgot about that banger. Shame 'gossip' didn't become a hit indeed </3 a summer playlist staple for those with taste xThank youuuuu Brer for the detailed comment! I really appreciate you taking the time to listen/re-listen to all these songs and share your thoughts <3
Friday at 22:205 days Author TOP 100 SONGS: 90-8190. FKA twigs - Striptease | 166 points89. Man/Woman/Chainsaw - Only Girl | 170 points88. Addison Rae - Summer Forever | 172 points87. Sofia Kourtesis - Unidos (with Daphni) | 174 points86. The Horrors - Lotus Eater | 175 points85. Katarsis - Tavo akys | 179 points84. The Weeknd - Timeless (feat. Playboi Carti) | 180 points (peak: #9)83. PinkPantheress - Nice to Know You | 180 points (peak: #8)82. Night in Athens - I Search For A Sign | 181 points81. TV Girl & George Clanton - Butterflies (feat. Jordana) | 185 pointsFKA Twigs once again makes her mark in this next section. 'Striptease' can be found as track 9 on her first album release of the year, Eusexua. I remember thinking this song had an Eartheater quality to it and have since felt validated, as a new version featuring none other than Eartheater later materialised. I do not approve of the original being wiped in favour of this one on the updated version of Eusexua, though! 'Striptease' flips the traditional idea of this bodily performance on its head and explores the power of the mind, with suitably vulnerable lyrics. The evolution of the production feels like two separate entities, much like our physical and mental states, as it starts off bleepy and metallic, yet calm in tempo, but morphs into this whirlwind of drum & bass noise, also coupled with Gregorian chant-style vocals. I later learned that Dylan Brady of 100 gecs was involved with producing this song so the more abrasive elements make total sense. As per usual, the accompanying music video is a work of art, as we see Twigs performing in a tunnel before later psychedelically floating for the passers by, to match the shift in the song musically.Mixed-gender 6-piece London group Man/Woman/Chainsaw first attracted my attention when I heard their song 'Ode To Clio' on 6Music in 2024. They thankfully remained on my radar, with an unforgettable band name and sound, once again featuring in my weekly chart with new release 'Only Girl'. The violin is one of the most beautiful instruments to my ears so the heavy use of it on this song was an immediate selling point, in conjunction with the piano. Vera Leppänen delivers the lovestruck lyrics with warmth and injects a bit of pop sensibility to an otherwise alt package. I announced FSR Rontvia as the winning nation during BJSC 179 and they selected 'Only Girl' as their auto-qualifier pick for the final contest of the year. This registered a respectable 13th place finish for them. Unsurprisingly, 'Only Girl' got my top marks even if it wasn't a discovery, locking in an impressive fourth and final set of 18 points from my nation to theirs this year.'Addison Rae summer' could certainly apply to my own life this year as I unexpectedly got to see her live, as a support act for Lana Del Rey in July. I felt the most appropriate selections for her setlist would be 'Money Is Everything' (for namedropping Lana), 'Diet Pepsi' and 'Summer Forever' - with the latter two feeling like her most 'Lana-coded' songs musically. She fulfilled this fantasy and indeed performed all three live! Addison went one better by singing 'Diet Pepsi' both solo and with Lana. I saw them on 4th July so was one day out from witnessing the first ever live performance of 'Summer Forever'. This is an escapism anthem that heavily romanticises the highs of summer fun and causes Addison to declare that she's never felt less alone. The production, worked on by all-female team Elvira Anderfjärd and Luka Kloser much like the rest of the project, has a dreamy R&B tinge to it. The most Lana inspired parts of the song for me are the chorus and her adlibs on the bridge.Peruvian DJ and producer Sofia Kourtesis released a new EP last year titled Volver. This included @blacksquare's BJSC smash 'Corazón' and also a collaboration with fellow electronic name Daphni, aka the man behind Caribou. Kourtesis said their team-up 'Unidos' is essentially about how we're better when we come together, so an apt message to use for a team-up. It contains dancefloor-ready house production and repetitive but soulful vocals, with uplifting lines such as "you never let them get you down" leading the way. This euphoric banger feels a bit more upbeat than most of the Sofia material I'm familiar with, but I'm certainly not complaining... that drop hits hard. The two seem to be living their best lives DJing for us all in the music video.'Lotus Eater' by The Horrors originally made my weekly chart in 2024 but had a whole new lease of life in 2025. Their sixth studio album Night Life was released in March and this song suddenly clicked for me more than ever before within the context of that body of work. 'Lotus Eater' hauntingly follows somebody who has lived in blissful ignorance, but comes back to reality. It's a song of two halves, as it starts out with synth-heavy darkwave qualities but evolves into more of an industrial sound. The existential words similarly develop, opening with reflections about how we've put too much energy into worrying and now time is slipping away, but in the third verse a more positive "move into the light" is offered, for a new start. The 7-minute run time is a gripping listen.I recall fellow BuzzJack poster Lex claiming that I'd enjoy Lithuania's Eurovision entry in 2025 as it was apparently "moody indie dreck"! They were right as 'Tavo akys' by Katarsis ended up being my favourite song in the contest this year. Lead singer Lukas brings the drama with his intense stares, lyrics and vocal performance. You can feel the anguish in his voice as he frustratingly explores themes of emotional disconnect, where empty words have fractured a relationship. The song becomes particularly powerful when he repeats titular word "tavo" many times towards the end. Elsewhere, the production is right up my street with those atmospheric alt-rock guitars and drums. It doesn't sound like a typical Eurovision entry at all but made it to the final nevertheless, finishing in 16th place. The Weeknd released his sixth studio album Hurry Up Tomorrow right at the start of 2025. I found the project too bloated and a step down from his previous couple of records, but it still had its moments, including 'Timeless' - which originally came out in 2024, but didn't properly click with me until listening to the album. This song is a fun, braggadocious moment in his catalogue that also invites Playboi Carti along for the ride, who seemingly switches it up with a couple of different delivery choices. However, I have since read a lot of speculation that Carti's contributions are actually AI, which would be shameless and a turn-off if so. It'd be especially laughable with the "...I been legit" hook. Elsewhere, the ultimate highlight of this song for me is the incredibly smooth trappy synth production courtesy of Pharrell and Mike Dean. "Feel like it's 03, Neptune drum with a beam" indeed."I know this isn't light for a Friday night" sings PinkPantheress and indeed a Friday evening spent writing lots of words about music is no quick task. But it's fun. 'Nice to Know You' is the first of multiple tracks from her mixtape Fancy That to feature in the countdown. The 'Freak Like Me' interpolation on 'Stateside' isn't the only bit of Sugababes DNA on the project. PinkPantheress unearthed a hidden gem in 'Spiral' by William Orbit, Sugababes and Kenna from 2006, subsequently sampling it on the chorus of 'Nice to Know You'. This song shows a vulnerable side to PinkPantheress as she navigates tension in a friendship. The strings in the production add a further emotive layer while the 2-step garage elements build on the noughties throwback sound created with the sample. In a genius move, PinkPantheress got the Sugababes to contribute an updated feature to this song on remix project Fancy Some More?'I Search For A Sign' by Night in Athens was entered to the 173rd edition of the BuzzJack Song Contest, by @Scene's nation Cheiron. This was love at first listen and I threw all of my support behind it, awarding Night in Athens top marks in the semi. However, it shockingly did not qualify for the final. My favourites were done dirty that month as I also lost Snapped Ankles, Kiss Facility and GUNSHIP from my votes. Pfffft. 'I Search For A Sign' may have swerved a final placement but it did become a hit in my chart, if that's any consolation. This darkwave sound was me bait to the highest degree. I love those instantly commanding synths, gothic vocals and drama-filled lyrics where the protagonist is "lost in a labyrinth of desire". They commit the cardinal sin of rhyming that with fire, but I'll let it slide.I was excited to hear TV Girl and George Clanton's collaborative mini-album Fauxllennium, released towards the very end of 2024, after getting into 'Take A Trip' and 'Summer 2000 Baby' from earlier on in the year. 'Butterflies' was easily my favourite track of the remaining five from the project. This song explores themes of freedom, touching upon the romantic 'butterfly feeling' metaphor and comparing that to imagery with limitations, such as birds in cages. The gorgeous production combines laidback trip-hop elements with dynamic synths that remind me of Madonna's 'Ray of Light'. The breakdown, which contains a sample of 'Rebel Without A Pause' by Public Enemy, serves as an exciting shift in mood later on in the song.

Saturday at 22:154 days Ooh nice to see Tavo Akys here! Certainly something a bit different for Eurovision, glad the UK pointed it well. It's been quite the run of good Lithuanian Eurovision entries for me - this one will be appearing in my EOY at some point as well!
