and also, aren't there always caveats in the past? like, acts used to hype music into the charts, old stats were far less reliable on their own merits (ringing round a few shops here and there), it's not like there was some mythical time when the rules were perfect and we knew exactly who bought what and when. it may be different to what it was now but it is at least accurate for what it is, it's not like it was always very good in the past
