Unfortunately this asterisk is not being applied and it should be, but the OCC are stifling this caveat....But it is the longest running based on the criteria they use for the entire charts. The same as when Frankie Laine set the record…“There was no single "official" or scientifically audited UK chart in 1953 and 1954. The rankings published primarily by the New Musical Express (NME) and Melody Maker relied on manually polled small samples of retail shops, making them prone to human error, regional bias, and manipulation.Small Sample Sizes: Polls were taken by telephoning or writing to a limited, hand-picked group of record shops across major cities.Inconsistent Returns: Store owners often guessed sales figures or reported subjective popularity rather than exact till receipts.“
Yesterday at 18:141 day In fact there was no official chart until 1969 when BMRB started compiling it from actual sales instead of points based on the rankings of the dealers and thus the criteria now are completely different (not least the method of completion) from when Frankie Laine first set the record. The 'official' charts are the same in (a wrongly assigned) name only. Also Record Mirror started publishing their chart in 1955 before Melody Maker in 1956 (and DISC in 1958 and Record Retailer in 1960). Record Retailer's chart ran to 50 positions from [almost] the start of 1960 and so was 'deemed' official despite having the smallest reach and smallest number of dealer returns... I personally don't think you can compare records pre- and post-streaming as they are entirely different criteria... and you could even go as far as to say there's three different eras - pre-1969 (points from sales ranking), 1969 to 2014 (sales), 2014+ (sales + streams) that shouldn't be compared, though at least the first two are measuring the same thing but by a different means... Yesterday at 18:161 day Again, all of this is contextual, but Rein Me In is the longest running #1 in chart history regardless of that context. As chart fans, we know ACR is playing a part in the true statistics, but it doesn't change the fact of Rein Me In's record-breaking achievement.
Yesterday at 18:241 day Except it does change the fact. There is an asterisk on its achievement (perhaps two as a) you're not comparing like with like and b) it's only after artifical manipulation by ACR)
Yesterday at 18:261 day So if there was no official charts until 1969 does that mean Franki3 Lane didnt actually have a record to even break ?

As I said, there are at least three different 'eras' and it's debatable how much should be allowed to follow through. While the pre-1969 and 1969 to 2014 are at least measuring the same thing (sales by different means), the streaming era essentially measures listens and so is extremely different from the prior two eras.

Yesterday at 20:071 day Of course that's again with a caveat as even if you exclude everything that happened pre-2014 to match like with like, Last Christmas has still spent 20 unadjusted, though only 12 adjusted weeks at No.1, while Sam and Olivia are currently on only 15 unadjusted weeks, but 19 adjusted weeks... it does look like they'll add to this on Friday unless something extremely major happens...
22 hours ago22 hr All these caveats and asterisks are just that, though. The record itself can't be disputed because that is the official chart. There's nothing to agree or disagree with because it's not an opinion, it's a statistic! Like I said, context tells a greater story, but there's absolutely no contesting that Sam and Olivia have the actual record, because the official chart involves the ACR rules currently. Nobody's suggesting things wouldn't be different if ACR weren't a thing, but it is and that's the official version of the chart that counts for the record books.
21 hours ago21 hr Yes and that's the problem, because there are caveats and the OCC do not make it clear that that is the case and block your comments when you try to bring it up.... and the record can be disputed because of the caveats. Edited 21 hours ago21 hr by braindeadpj

1 hour ago1 hr Lewis will be responsible for such a tiny amount of its sales - video streaming doesn't count for a great deal anyway and Rein Me In hasn't had a notable boost on the video streaming chart since it came out. Sam's original solo version will be a higher proportion but still not that much in the grand scheme of things I'd say.
