  • Shocked to see this just now: The Popjustice Forum Sometimes goodbye though it hurts in your heart is the on... Hi everyone, I’m going to be shutting down the forum at the end of this month — on Sun

Very sad for them, all the history lost if they can’t archive it.

I hope the owner gives the members the opportunity to buy or crowdfund it. Seems only fair to me as members make a community what it is.

I don't know too much about PopJustice but it sounds quite similar to what happened with DenDen, where ultimately the site was owned by one person and that person decided to pull the plug. It does make me wonder what will eventually happen to this place as well.

Absolutely heartbroken, and this is coming from someone who wasn’t even a member (but who lurked for years)

Truly awful. I hope they at least manage to get an archive read-only page after it’s closed of all the threads. Would be terrible for all of that history to go to waste.

Part of me wonders why he didn’t just pass the baton to SockMonkey, londonrain, 2014, ohnostalgia or another mod to be admin.

Devastating.

Yeah just to echo what has been said above, I was never able to become a member but lurked on the forums religiously since my late teens and will greatly miss it.

Not only did I enjoy reading new stuff but I also liked looking through old threads to see people’s reactions to music eras in real time.

Same! Like what?!

I get loads of useful information from it. Plus like has been said I'd re-read artists' threads from the 2000s for the real-time experiences.

I’m reading this farewell post and nothing is clear to me. It says there are many reasons, but none are actually given. It’s just a lot of empty words

Absolutely gutted. I wasn't even a member but I visited daily as my go-to for pop girly updates after Digital Spy went sh!t.

I can’t believe they’re just deleting the entire forum. That’s 2 decades of real-time pop culture discussion just down the drain and they’re not making any effort to archive that? I never even got the chance to register despite lurking since like 2013, maybe they would have survived if they opened it more than once a generation!

Something tells me the dramas that happened on there regarding Taylor Swift / her team verbotening any images of her being posted on there at all last autumn that I read about have accelerated towards this set of circumstances, and that it was getting harder to run and regulate effectively.

I was very briefly on the Popjustice forums during my late teens, but only briefly because it was, much like today, a bit cliquey and rife with the kind of cultural snobbery and eliteism that the blog itself was pushing back against, certainly where pop music was concerned.

The actual blog itself however, back in the day, was essential daily reading for me, and Peter Robinson is a fantastic journalist and authority on pop music, in fact he remains one of my biggest inspirations with my own writing and blogs I've done.

But I suspect his heart simply is no longer in keeping a website alive that, if we are all honest, passed its overall wider apex of excitement and relevance in the wider pop cultural landscape well on a decade ago.

It's all too easy to forget that similar conversations were being had 20 years ago when Smash Hits magazine closed, about how it was the end of days etc, when with hindsight it was obvious that it was a shadow of what it once was. There will always be spaces championing pop music and communities that fans can share and connect on. These will look different to future generations and evolve with the times, but they will carry on.

Sad times indeed (and I say this as someone who was never able to join but lurked a lot). They should definitely archive it at least.

make me think of atrl ngl what if certain artists go for them😭😭

I’m really sad to see it go, if I’m honest I find it a lot easier on the eye on a mobile to find info and layout wise so it will definitely be missed!

Just done a little bit of further investigation. It would appear, as per his bio on his site here, that as of last year Peter has knocked music journalism on the head altogether and is now moving into therapy and coaching: https://www.peterrobinson.net/
