I did not know 'Something Good '08' was a Van She [Tech] remix! I personally like it a lot more than the original version as well.

My dad was at the time a fan of Savage Garden so the release of 'Insatiable' was a big event - very good track.

That makes me feel old 🤣

Tbf I could have given both Violet Hill and No Woman No Cry a few points. I didn’t shortlist them, but they’re on a par with my lowest six points. It wouldn’t have made a difference to whether or not they qualified though.

No Woman No Cry is great, though I’m a big Bob Marley fan anyway. Got me thinking, are there many other top 10 songs where the probably definitive version is a live one?

38. The Art Of Noise - Close (To The Edit) 166pts

Writers - Anne Dudley, Gary Langan, J. J. Jeczalik, Paul Morley, Trevor Horn

Top points - King Rollo 25, Jaz13music 23, Julian 22

With it's title inspired by the 1972 Yes song 'Close To The Edge', this single samples two further Yes tracks, 'Leave It' and 'Owner Of A Lonely Heart', from the 90125 album that three members of The Art Of Noise had contributed to. The "hey!" part went on to be sampled in other songs, most notably 'Firestarter' by The Prodigy. Close (To The Edit) wins a tie-break over Something Good '08 by 13 votes to 11.

Sad to see The Art Of Noise miss the final, a great song way ahead of its time back in the 80s. A measure of the genius production by Trevor Horn and innovation of the ZTT record label.

34. Karen Ramirez - Looking For Love 177pts

Writers - Ben Watt, Tracey Thorn

Top points - AH Gold 23, DaTilt 18, Jester 16

This is a cover of a song by Everything But The Girl from 1993 which had the title 'I Didn't Know I Was Looking for Love'. It was one of two top 40 hits for the singer from London. I'm more familiar with the remix that was track 1 on the 'Euphoria' double CD of trance tunes from the late 90s.

Great atmospheric vibes, one of the best dance songs of '98. It wears its EBTG, Todd Terry and Robert Miles influences (piano before the last chorus) well .

33. The Chemical Brothers - Star Guitar 178pts

Writers - Tom Rowlands, Ed Simons

Top points - rio309 24, King Rollo 23, Jade 22, dandy* 22

From 2002, this was the sixth out of seven top 10 hits by the Chemical Brothers. It's called Star Guitar as it samples the acoustic guitar at the start of 'Starman' by David Bowie.

32. Groove Armada featuring Mutya Buena - Song 4 Mutya (Out Of Control) 182pts

Writers - Andy Cato, Tim Hutton, Mutya Buena, Karen Poole, Tom Findlay

Top points - Jade 18, chartjack2 18, vibe 17, Chez Wombat 17

Song 4 Mutya was originally called Song 4 Estelle as it was first intended for Estelle. It ended up with Mutya Buena who had recently left the Sugababes who failed to get any of their three number 8 singles into the semi-finals.

31. Sigala and Becky Hill - Wish You Well 188pts

Writers - Bruce Fielder, Joakim Jarl, Jenson Vaughan, Andreas Kruger, Rebecca Claire Hill, Ryan Campbell, Maegan Cottone

Top points - ElectroBoy 25, danG 25, Jason 23

So Becky Hill's second song in this semi-final also fails to progress. It was the seventh out of eight top 10 hits for the English DJ/producer Sigala.

Still only lost 1 of my top 17 (and 3 overall) - so with 5 songs left to go, this is looking really promising. But I shouldn’t speak too soon.

30. Sylvester - You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real) 203pts

Writers - James Wirrick, Sylvester James

Top points - chartjack2 22, DaTilt 21, Liamski689 19

This disco classic from 1978 was the only top 20 hit for Sylvester. Five of his other singles reached the top 75.

How on earth did You Make Me Feel not get to the final?!!!! Also sad to lose Star Guitar but had a feeling it would miss

Edited by gasman449

Damn! Sylvester is the 2nd of my high scorers to fall out but I’m pleased he got this far.

'You Make Me Feel' is fab as is Sylvester and Patrick Cowley's (pity they both died young :( ) later track 'Do You Wanna Funk' which recently appeared in the chart top 40 hits of the 80s thread on here.

'Wish You Well' is probably the best song for both Sigala and Becky Hill. Most of Sigala's other songs are too weak and poppy for me.

It is really strange - all my top 10 is nearly gone - how can Sylvester, Cerrone, Karen Ramirez, Art Of Noise cannot go to the final.

Oh for goodness sake Buzzjack, Star Guitar not making it either? Probably my most watched music video ever, that or Bad Cover Version

Things I learnt today: 'Looking For Love' by Karen Ramirez was a cover of an Everything But The Girl song o

(also I'm not overly fussed about any of today's losses though it would have been cool for Sylvester to have finished a bit higher)
