March 17Mar 17 The Lumidee track and the Girls Aloud ones are fine, but neither are classics to me, they feel very much of their time.
March 17Mar 17 Author 16 Jennifer Lopez - Jenny From The Blockavg: 7.13👑 Pop Royalty: 10 (Mango, ...ready for it), 9 (leww, Viper*, Jack, AllStarBySmashMouth)❌ Pop Flop: 3 (Padamic_Tension), 4 (Billy.)J.Lo loves her life and her public so hopefully that includes us BuzzJackers, after gifting her a 7.13 average. 'Jenny From The Block' was chosen as the lead single from Lopez's third album This Is Me... Then. This record was largely about her relationship with Ben Affleck, of frenzied media power couple 'Bennifer' fame, but 'Jenny From The Block' specifically was a departure from this overall theme - instead expressing that fame hasn't changed her as a person, while also celebrating her success. Despite Affleck's absence in the song thematically, he instead appeared in the controversial music video alongside Jennifer, with the two being surveilled by the press. R&B and Hip-Hop flavoured 'Jenny From The Block' was a success, charting at #3 in both the U.S. and U.K., in fact her fourth #3 hit here following: 'Play', 'Ain't It Funny' and 'I'm Gonna Be Alright', plus her 9th top 10 hit overall. It has become a signature song and even boasts a pretty big celebrity fan in Taylor Swift, who said it was her favourite song as a kid.'Jenny From The Block' may have been track #11 on Pop Princesses but didn't quite receive any 11s in the rate. However, she did get two 10s from Mango and ...ready for it. But with a lot also comes a little and Padamic_Tension was least keen on this J.Lo hit, scoring it 3.
March 17Mar 17 In hindsight i probably should’ve given Jenny From The Block a lower score. From her 1999-2012 run it’s one of my least favourite singles from her.
March 17Mar 17 Aww I have grown to really adore Girls Aloud's Jump. It's brilliantly produced and the girls (Nadine especially ) sell the heck out of the song.
March 18Mar 18 Actually prefer GA's cover of 'Jump' to the original oops. That ones fine but this one has catchier production for me.Like 'Born To Try' but agreed she has better and 'Jenny From The Block also. Not crazy on what else has fallen since last commenting, even Kelly's!
March 18Mar 18 Wow, I missed this rate! There really are lots of bangers on this compilation!Delta and Jenny from the Block are the only major losses so far.Born to Try is brilliant, but I'd probably rate it a 9 (compared to a sea of 10's in her discography and this compilation!) so it probably wouldn't be too much higher anyway - this rate would always be a bloodbath for me!JFTB is easily my favourite JLo song, and it's definitely an 11/10 in her discography, but I think it would make low Top 10 at best in my rankings here (and even then, I'm not sure I could squeeze it in). Such a great set of songs! Edited March 18Mar 18 by Juranamo
March 18Mar 18 Jenny From The Block is iconic and ridiculous in equal measure. I appreciate its existence and laugh at the lack of self awareness the song exudes but I rarely listen to it.
March 18Mar 18 “Jenny From The Block” has good production which gets it up to around a 5. The lyrics are of course terrible.
March 18Mar 18 I've never found the lyrics particularly terrible! I don't know JLo's background (did she come from a little, I don't know?), but I've always interpreted it as very self aware... Almost a message of "Don't give up on your dreams, I'm a star! I know where I came from, it's possible - you can be a star too without compromising who you are!"It's one of the few JLo songs I'd actively choose to put on these days!
March 18Mar 18 It's a guilty pleasure. My favourite memory associated with this though, must've been at least 20 years ago when I heard Jo Whiley play it on Radio 1 - halfway through she stopped it and said "sorry, I can't bear to listen to another second of this. I hate that song so much"
March 18Mar 18 3 hours ago, Scene said:Are we even sure it's J. Lo singing on JFTB? Those vocals aren't entirely hers, a singer called Natasha Ramos recorded the demo version of this track and for the official Jennifer Lopez song, they kept Ramo's vocals on the chorus and ab-libs. Apparently JLO has made a career out of stealing other peoples vocals for her songs.
March 18Mar 18 JFTB is more... mixed reception than I remembered. I think it's a classic in her singles catalogue, perfect for 2000's throwback parties. Edited March 18Mar 18 by AllStarBySmashMouth

Lo's hits (Play's chorus is basically entirely Christina ).

She also contributed vocals to 5 tracks on the album it's from!

March 18Mar 18 Author 15 Sugababes - In The Middleavg: 7.5👑 Pop Royalty: 10 (HarryGarfield), 9 (Scene, DaTilt, Jessie Where, Jack, JosephStyles)❌ Pop Flop: 4 (Julian_), 6 (Padamic_Tension, Viper*, Chapman, Chez Wombat)Sugababes are getting by alright with an average jump to 7.5 now. They say good things come in threes and 'In The Middle' was chosen as single #3 from the girls' third album... titled none other than Three. This single was a return to an upbeat dance-pop sound following the slower 'Too Lost In You' for the Christmas market. The girls worked alongside Xenomania heavyweights such as Miranda Cooper and Brian Higgins to write and produce this song, of course a team more heavily associated with pop peers Girls Aloud. 'In The Middle' was inspired by different situations that the girls had experienced on a night out, inviting the listener to "enjoy the ride". This song peaked at #8 here in the U.K. and satisfyingly spent exactly 8 weeks in the chart too. It was the girls' 7th top 10 hit to date. At the time of writing, I notice their Wikipedia page says it was a 6th consecutive top 10 hit for Sugababes, but that clearly needs to be removed or updated, as poor brave 'Shape' actually stalled at #11 during that run of singles.HarryGarfield enjoyed the ride most of all and awarded the girls a 10. However, Julian_ particularly burst their bubble, giving 'In The Middle' a 4.
March 18Mar 18 I really love that one, despite some lyrics which err on the nonsensical side (which I find part of its charm)
March 18Mar 18 Along with Jump that was my joint lowest rated although I do like it as it's such an earworm. Very much not A-tier Sugababes though.
