Posted May 6May 6 The draws have been completed and votes submitted and now it is time to find out who the lucky winner of the lottery is!Results will commence at about 8pm, until then, feel free to speculate x
May 6May 6 I hope at least some of the songs from earlier years can do well, there were some very good picks especially from the 70s x
May 6May 6 Author As we had a dramatic, manipulated reveal last time, votes are simply in order of receipt, it turned out to be a pretty exciting reveal as it was xVoter 1: WoW73Year: 1973Song: Marsha Hunt's 22 - (Oh, No! Not!) The Beast Day In one of the many nice coincidences, WoW73 gets his almost namesake year. He went with American actress and short lived singer, Marsha Hunt, most famous for performing as Dionne in the rock musical, Hair, she had a very short lived music career off the back of this with a backing band of Marsha Hunt's 22, with this quirkily titled song being a great example of their funk and psychedelia blend. They released two singles and recorded several demos for an album that Hunt wasn't aware of until 2020 apparently, they split soon after as they had their equipment stolen and Hunt's daughter fell ill, she has had relationships with Marc Bolan and Mick Jagger and is the mother of Karis Jagger, and there's been speculation was the Stones' Brown Sugar was written about her. She has additionally authored several works including an autobiography of life as a breast cancer survivor. Here is my ballot: 12 The Supremes10 Sarah McLachlan8 Goombay Dance Band7 The Andrews Sisters6 Tina Turner5 Four Jacks and a Jill4 The Bangles3 Wanda Jackson2 Harry Nilsson1 The Human League12; The Supremes - My World Is Empty Without You (1965)10; Sarah McLachlan – Vox (1988)08; Goombay Dance Band - Sun Of Jamaica (1979)07; The Andrews Sisters - Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy (1941)06; Tina and Ike Turner - It’s Gonna Work Out Fine (1963)05; Four Jacks and a Jill - Master Jack (1968)04; The Bangles - I'll Set You Free (1989)03; Wanda Jackson - Funnel of Love (1961)02; (Harry) Nilsson – Spaceman (1972)01; The Human League - The Things That Dreams Are Made Of (1981)A heavily retro-leaning first set of votes make the Supremes our first leader of the night, can they stay there? x
May 6May 6 Wow - that is a cool representation of the songs giving some background information for each artist.
May 6May 6 I never realised until this contest where the sample of Fem@il’s Flee Fly Flo came from. Great entry choice. And why have I mentioned that song twice in two days 😂
May 6May 6 Author Voter 2: MangøYear: 1965Song: The Supremes – My World Is Empty Without You Mango struggled slightly with one of the earlier years, but he came out well with a deeper cut from one of the premier girl groups of the decade. This song was a top 5 hit in the US, but did not chart in the UK, and probably wouldn't be on anyone's mind straight away when naming Supremes songs. The fast tempo contrasts with the darker lyrics to haunting effect. It has been noted (and indeed some on SyncTube noticed this too) of the similarities of the melody of the chorus with the Rolling Stones' Paint It Black, and it predates the recording of that so maybe Jagger was listening to something he didn't make clear x 12 The Bangles - I'll Set You Free (1989) - have loved this song forever, it's just gorgeous wub once I saw this in the list, there was never any question of anything else getting my 12 points! Can't wait to find out who sent it!10 Mark 'Oh - Tears Don't Lie (1995)08 Buzzcocks - What Do I Get (1978)07 The Lightning Seeds - Life's Too Short (1999)06 Moby - Move (You Make Me Feel So Good) (1993)05 Goombay Dance Band - Sun Of Jamaica (1979)04 Shakira - Dónde Estás Corazón (1996)03 T-SQUARE - TRAVELERS (1984)02 Nilsson - Spaceman (1972)01 Hooverphonic - Eden (1998) Not so many great new discoveries this time round, the top 5 were all songs that I was already familiar with. I did enjoy discovering the Goombay & Shakira songs though!16; The Bangles - I'll Set You Free (1989)13; Goombay Dance Band - Sun Of Jamaica (1979)12; Mangø - The Supremes - My World Is Empty Without You (1965)10; Sarah McLachlan – Vox (1988)10; Mark’Oh – Tears Don’t Lie (1995)08; Buzzcocks – What Do I Get (1978)07; The Andrews Sisters - Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy (1941)07; The Lightning Seeds – Life’s Too Short (1999)06; Tina and Ike Turner - It’s Gonna Work Out Fine (1963)06; Moby – Move (You Make Me Feel So Good) (1993)05; Four Jacks and a Jill - Master Jack (1968)04; Shakira - Dónde Estás Corazón (1996)04; Nilsson – Spaceman (1972)03; Wanda Jackson - Funnel of Love (1961)03; T-SQUARE - TRAVELERS (1984)01; The Human League - The Things That Dreams Are Made Of (1981)01; Hooverphonic - Eden (1998)So we naturally have a new leader as The Bangles take up the post with another strong score, after none of them making it the first time, the 90s songs begin to populate the scoreboard.
May 6May 6 Author Voter 3: DobboYear: 1962Song: Bob Dylan – A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna FallFrom one 60s icon to another, Dobbo had a tough draw but certainly picked a standout song. A song from his early career predating his big breakthrough, it is still very much reflective of his introspective, poetic social commentary in his songwriting that would go on to influence many. The song, originally written as a poem, has been mischaracterised as a response to the Cuban Missile Crisis of October 1962, and while a true meaning has never been pinned down, it's commentary on the darker sides of humanity and his wisened words making him seem many years beyond the 21 he was at the time has proved to persist throughout his career. What a fun trip through the space and time of MUSIC, let's do this shall we?! 12 Mark 'Oh - Tears Don't Lie (1995)10 Innocence - Natural Thing (1990)08 Ashra - Blackouts (1977)07 POiSON GiRL FRiEND - Slave to the Computer (1994)06 Nilsson - Spaceman (1972)05 The Starseeds - Parallel Life (1997)04 Moby - Move (You Make Me Feel So Good) (1993)03 The Lightning Seeds - Life's Too Short (1999)02 T-SQUARE - TRAVELERS (1984) 01 Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra - Onedin Line Theme (Adagio of Spartacus and Phrygia) Theme (1971) So the 90s win (obviously, they had a massive advantage) but the 70s put up a good fight in fairness! 60s and prior were massively handicapped but I was disappointed with the 80s which largely underwhelmed. byebye22; Mark’Oh – Tears Don’t Lie (1995)16; The Bangles - I'll Set You Free (1989)13; Goombay Dance Band - Sun Of Jamaica (1979)12; Mangø - The Supremes - My World Is Empty Without You (1965)10; Sarah McLachlan – Vox (1988)10; Innocence – Natural Thing (1990)10; The Lightning Seeds – Life’s Too Short (1999)10; Nilsson – Spaceman (1972)10; Moby – Move (You Make Me Feel So Good) (1993)08; Buzzcocks – What Do I Get (1978)08; Ashra – Blackouts (1977)07; The Andrews Sisters - Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy (1941)07; POiSON GiRL FRiEND - Slave to the Computer (1994)06; Tina and Ike Turner - It’s Gonna Work Out Fine (1963)05; Four Jacks and a Jill - Master Jack (1968)05; The Starseeds - Parallel Life (1997)05; T-SQUARE - TRAVELERS (1984)04; Shakira - Dónde Estás Corazón (1996)03; Wanda Jackson - Funnel of Love (1961)01; The Human League - The Things That Dreams Are Made Of (1981)01; Hooverphonic - Eden (1998)01; Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra - Onedin Line Theme (Adagio of Spartacus and Phrygia) Theme (1971)The leader switches as another strong score for Mark'Oh sees them take pole position and Dobbo generously gets several more songs off the mark.
May 6May 6 Author Voter 4: Paddington JamesYear: Pre-1960Song: The Andrews Sisters – Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy On his first outing here, Paddington had a bit of a challenge to say the least, but he did a great job with what may well be the oldest song ever entered to a song contest on here. Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy, an early US pop chart top 10, was closely based on an earlier song by the same songwriters, "Beat Me Daddy, Eight to the Bar," about a virtuoso boogie-woogie piano player. It was originally featured in the 1941 movie Buck Privates and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Song, but lost to The Last Time I Saw Paris. It became hugely popular in WWII and was featured in a lot of media of that era, it has remained popular being covered by Bette Middler in 1972and perhaps most notably, it's hook being reinterpreted in tribute on Christina Aguilera’s Candyman from her Back to Basics throwback era.Hi Chez, How are you? Please see below for my votes. May 6May 6 Not the song that I thought would take an early lead! But love seeing The Bangles up there
May 6May 6 Author Voter 5: gooddeltaYear: 1968Song: Four Jacks & A Jill – Master JackAlthough probably 30 years off his comfort zone, gooddelta has proved himself pretty musically adaptable and he does so here by sending a very nice acoustic folk rock from a South African ensemble. Originally formed in 1964 without a "Jill" under the name The Nevadas and then The Zombies, but with the appointment of a female singer and presumably to avoid confusion with a certain other band at the time, became Four Jacks and a Jill. They were also apparently the first group in South Africa to wear their hair long. This song reached the top 20 of the Billboard hot 100 at number 18, though they only continued for another eight years, they have remained active recording a range of sing-along educational story books mentioned in This is Spinal Tap They have recorded and produced albums for a range of sing-along educational story books for various South African charities for Animal welfare, the blind and children with disabilities. They were notably one of the recommendations by Lt. Robert Hookstratten to Spinal Tap in the movie of the same name. 12: The Bangles - I'll Set You Free (1989)10: Hooverphonic - Eden (1998)08: Shakira - Dónde Estás Corazón (1996)07: Sarah McLachlan - Vox (1988)06: Marsha Hunt's 22 - (Oh, No! May 6May 6 I had no real idea what to do with 1968 without sending a well known artist, which I didn't want to do, and Now haven't even compiled a Yearbook for that year yet for me to find lower charting gems!So while researching and going through a load of tat, for some reason I eventually stumbled upon the charts of South Africa that year, and originally came across a parody cover version of Master Jack by South African comedian Al Debbo from the same year called Baas Jack, which actually sounds like he's singing 'Buzzjack' so would have been a very funny entry. But then I realised the original version by Four Jacks and a Jill was actually a big hit in the US too surprisingly (for a South African export that long ago!), yet it was never a hit in the UK. I just found it absolutely charming so decided to go with the original, particularly because it has quite an interesting interpretation lyrically of being a rejection of apartheid. Also, for some reason the general pretty, folky but melodic vibe of it reminds me of Nine Million Bicycles by Katie Melua.I don't expect it to do well at all and didn't find anything better that I thought would do well from 1968, but I didn't want to change my year, and anyway this was almost too lovely not to share, even if it comes last!
May 6May 6 'Master Jack' was a gorgeous entry! ❤️Surprised a fellow '60s standout from Tülay German doesn't have any points yet.
May 6May 6 Author Voter 6: Viper*Year: 1963Song: Tina & Ike Turner – It’s Gonna Work Out FineViper's first song contest entry results in yet another iconic act of the 60s. This was officially released in 1961, but given it was featured on the album of the same name and re-released in 1963, it was fine x This classic call and response duet was the duo's first Grammy nominated song and their second million-selling single after A Fool in Love. Ike and Tina released several sequels related to the song, including 1962's "The Argument", in which they sang in a similar way but this time involved in an argument, and what was billed as the official sequel, Something Came Over You, recorded during their tenure at Kent Records. It has been re-recorded many times including in 1993 for Tina's biopic, What's Love Got to Do With It with her saxophonist Timmy Capello singing Ike's lines. Good morning Chez!
