Plus, those aren't even good numbers besides Bangabangabanga so a big part of it seems like streams from home

Delta was 10th and just cut off in that post, Ukraine was the only song missing from the real top 10 on Spotify streams, replaced by poor Felicia, who is still doing well it seems, as she has on streams since release, just nobody voted for it outside Scandinavia.

Bangaranga's numbers are really impressive indeed, easily the most popular 'real world' winner since Tattoo. Funny nobody really saw it coming until the semis but then, that was a performance for the history books. It certainly sold the song to me, and many others I'd imagine.

Has there been any other years where the winner was a bit of a shock? Even though the odds can be wrong sometimes but Bulgaria wasn't even in the top 10 odds at one point. I know Austria/Netherland 2014 odds shortened after the rehearsals. I remember France was favs in 2011 but didn't even top 10. Probably the biggest I can think of is Finland 2006. They werent predicted to go top 10 at all at the time. Have there been any others?

So glad Dara won. I did prefer Finland/Australia going into the final but her performance was amazing. It certainly looks like it has a shot of being a hit in Europe so far, #1 in quite a few countries on Spotify today.

I retract my comment but they managed to make me hate it because of how rubbish the performance was and yet points flowed.

They couldn't sing it on stage. Had zero chemistry and it looked awkward.

And the studio version was ruined with vocal effects..

To be honest, I think Brividi’s success was mostly down to Mahmood being an huge fan favourite just a few years back and not because it’s Italy necessarily.

A long time ago, but Fly On The Wings Of Love was 150/1 shortly before the final. It probably had shortened by the day of the final. Everybody in 2001 was similarly unfancied.

It's pretty unusual these days for the odds to be so wrong though as we all have access to the songs online months in advance and people post their own rankings and simulate juries weeks in advance of the contest, plus we can see how the songs are charting in advance and doing on YouTube etc across Europe. There are so many more metrics and much more data available to make decent predictions.

However staging and an unexpectedly great performance can still provide the shocks these days, as seen in the likes of Bulgaria and Romania this year, Bambie Thug for Ireland in 2024, Conchita and The Common Linnets in 2014...

People can spend months betting in advance but really, the semi-finals is where we get our first intel as to how things will go. Dara won the jury show audience poll in the semi-final unexpectedly and that was the first indication for me that this was going a lot bigger than expected. Funnily enough it also went viral quite quickly on TikTok some weeks ago, but as we know, TikTok rarely correlates with the contest hits (like Portugal last year, Snap in 2022) so I don't think people read a lot into that.

My obsession with Bangaranga is growing further and further. It stays such an exciting song, even after a LOT of listens. What a winner.

Yeah, I’ve jumped on the bandwagon big time. Who knows, maybe I’d have stanned it more if I’d paid proper attention before the contest this year but the performance really just tipped me into obsession.

I know it’s probably not cool to admit it but the song is actually alright.

It’s much better and more listenable than the previous 2 hagballads
