Sash!, so unlucky not to have a #1.

'Glorious' by Andreas Johnson lives up to its name, fantastic moody and dramatic rock song.

'Adelante' by Sash! is powerful, I first discovered it when doing the dance number ones of the 00s thread about 8 years ago.

2000 and Oasis are in vogue when England got knocked out of a major tournament.

Fast forward 26 years and nothing has changed.

Great set of episodes tonight, some real forgotten gems amongst them, specifically, Mint Royale and Lauren Laverne, REM, Andreas Johnson and Daphne and Celeste in the first episode, and Fierce and The Tamperer with Maya in the second episode.

Gabrielle "Rise" still such a gorgeous song and deserved number one. I saw her at the O2 Easter weekend last year and I shall see her again next month supporting JLS. One of our finest soul singers by far.

I adore REM’s The Great Beyond. Crazy to think it’s their highest charting single!

Glorious is indeed Glorious as well.

Tis a shame Sash! never managed a #1 but clearly 'Adelante' was never really in contention for it (and it would've been odd to have that as their sole #1 anyway over their bigger 90s hits)

I really like Rise, I think it's definitely Gabrielle's best single. It deserved #1 and it is great to see it increased sales in week two as more people discovered it. I think I probably was one of them.

Both Glorious and The Great Beyond are also really fab singles. I think I bought Andreas Johnson's album as well as the single, sadly it didn't live up to the promise of Glorious.

Glorious is epic, shame he was a one hit wonder here because he sent some great songs to Melodifestivalen later in the decade, and was very close to winning on a couple of occasions. I still follow his music.

Rise is effortlessly good, although I do prefer Out Of Reach overall, that really deserved to be a No.1. She was such a radio darling in 2000 and 2001 with these two songs and When A Woman (plus Dreams still being rinsed).

I liked The Great Beyond too, a great REM single. Adelante less so, not one of my favourites from Sash! And I really disliked Daphne & Celeste. Hammer To The Heart was the weakest Tamperer hit for me, Madonna definitely used the ABBA sample far better.

Quite a nice, well produced cover from Fierce. My mum loved that one and bought their album off the back of it. Girl On TV is so incredibly corny, but has a charm I suppose, but Summer Girls was far better and deserved a higher peak than this.

Don't Falter is really lovely, nice to see the performance of that, it ended up becoming a bit of a cult classic in the end at least.

Hated that second performance of A Little Bit Of Luck with the woman adlibbing over it. At least we have the first performance without it. Impressive longevity for that track.

i had no idea Gabrielle increased in sales 2nd week 👏 , so pleased and surprised this eas a big hit and made the album huge!!

Born to make me happy – a forgotten Britney classic really.  This gets overlooked in her discography despite being a really strong song, possibly because it never got a US release? 

 

Point Break & Scooch – I had forgotten all about them!  Flying the flag still remains a Eurovision classic for me!

 

Rise – a classic Gabrielle track of course, really beautiful with the Bob Dylan sample on it.  Bob Dylan waived 50% of the royalties on the track reasoning that he only provides the music therefore that was fair.  I’m a big Gabrielle fan she really was sensational for a fair while.

Good on Gabrielle for managing a second chart topper seven years after her first and another multi-weeker at that! Glad she got the rare Dylan sample clearance as that really adds to the atmosphere of the song. My new favourite #1 single of the year so far from the small pool we've had, very classy. Although 'Mr Tambourine Man' does slightly pip it as my favourite Dylan-adjacent #1 in all of chart history!

The double helping of 'Glorious' on TOTP has reminded me how good it is ❤️ I particularly love how the vocals and strings soar on the chorus.

Poor Sash! missing out on #1 yet again 😭 'Adelante' isn't their best work but that is rotten luck.

My highlight outside of the top 10 on TOTP was 'Don't Falter' by Mint Royale/Lauren Laverne it was a big post-contest grower for me after awardinary sent it to the BuzzJack Song Contest several years ago, very cute collab.

The Mint Royale / Laverne track is great - but who thought that January was a good time to promote it?!!! It always had Summer written all over it

That's easily the least remarkable of Sash!'s #2 hits.

'Hammer To the Heart' is great and 'Glorious' is amazing. I think this is the exact point I started following music and the charts!

When is Gabrielle’s “Rise” No 1 and also not No 1? This week is the answer, she loses her singles crown and drifts 1-2 (83,000) but ascends to No 1 on the album chart to compensate, her single also becomes the biggest seller of 2000 to date.

Instead, and to the surprise of no-one, Oasis are duly awarded their 5th chart topper in as many years with “Go Let It Out”, it’s the first release from their fourth album “Standing On The Shoulder Of Giants” which is out next month and contains a sample of Johnny Jenkins “I Walk On Gilded Splinters” (1968). Whilst it was never in danger of not storming to the top it sold just 180,600 copies last week (including 67,000 on its first day alone), well down on the 377,000 recorded by their last lead single “D’You Know What I Mean” three years ago, however it did corner 17% of the entire singles market. It’s also the first release on their new Big Brother label.

Eiffel 65's first single “Blue” topped our charts for 3 weeks last October before going on to sell a million and become the 2nd biggest seller of 1999, expectations were high therefore that new single “Move Your Body” would repeat the success. Despite an early showing at No 2 on sales flashes it quickly fell behind Gabrielle and ends up entering at No 3 (64,000), it has already reached No 1 in France, Austria and Italy so hardly a failure.

Ian Brown is another act that wisely waited until after the festive rush to release a new single, lead single from his current album “Golden Greats” bowed out at No 23 (“Love Like A Fountain”) but follow up “Dolphins Were Monkeys” becomes his third top 10 single and equal biggest matching the No 5 peak of 1998’s “My Star”. It actually sold 9,000 less (40,000) than that single but was aided by Brown’s version of Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean” on the CD single.

One of the original DJ’s from the 80s who can lay claim to have imported dance music as we know it into the UK, Dave Lee has long worked under the moniker Joey Negro, a much sought after DJ and remixer Negro has only graced the chart as an act on 4 occasions with 1992’s “Enter Your Fantasy” being his biggest hit at No 35. The story of his current hit “Must Be The Music” starts back in 1998 when Lee used another name, Z Factor, to record a track called “Gotta Keep Pushin” which made No 47 but was picked up by the producers of “Miami Uncovered” on Sky TV last year and is now reworked into “Must Be The Music” with added vocals by Taka Boom who happens to be Chaka Khan’s younger sister. The package sold 28,000 last week to arrive at No 8.

Sash! is disappointed again to fall 2-4 (41,000) and Britney Spears continues her pleasant stroll down the charts 4-6 (35,000) but once again keeps just ahead of REM 5-7 (32,000). Further down Andreas Johnson tumbles 7-9 (27,000) and defying gravity DJ Luck & MC Neat cling to No 10 (23,000).

Next week will be interesting with a new single by Christina Aguilera going head to head with returning chart favourites All Saints, Shania Twain and Aqua- can any of them topple Oasis?

I like 'Move Your Body' by Eiffel 65 and in 2016 Sia and Alan Walker brought the vibes back with a very similar style of dance on the chorus of their excellent Move Your Body (Alan Walker remix) track:

I loved Move Your Body, and the single had an album megamix on it that immediately persuaded me to get that - one of the best Europop (that was even the title) albums of its time.

I always think it's funny that Eiffel 65 managed another top three hit before disappearing from the UK charts for good yet Lou Bega's follow up couldn't even breach the top 40. Both could so easily have gone the same way, for better or for worse. Too Much Of Heaven deserved to be a third hit for Eiffel 65, not sure if the UK release was canned or if it was never even planned.

Also, around this time we went on holiday to Tenerife, my first ever holiday abroad, and Kim Lukas was all over the radio there with All I Really Want, which had been a top 10 hit all over Europe. Eiffel 65 produced the hit version of that and it so easily could have been a hit here at the time, I have no idea why they fumbled the bag there, she's even a British singer herself despite being more popular in Europe, kind of like Ann Lee. Eiffel 65 also produced some memorable remixes of Bloodhound Gang's The Bad Touch and S Club 7's Reach (this one has to be heard to be believed, the vocoder makes Jon sound like a robot).
