Isn't this in contravention of their own rules?

Rein Me In emerged triumphant after a short, sharp and successful social media campaign for fans to download the track on Thursday (30 July) boosted its digital sales from 562 to that point, to 3,865 just 24 hours later. The incentives to do so before the chart deadline, at a 59p price point, included prizes of Official Charts Fan Awards and T-Shirts with, appropriately, 19 of each available.

Or are they covered if they say Purchase not required...?

If it is in contravention i wouldn't be surprised if Shakira's management kick up a fuss about that...

Shakiras team was also running a competition to win tickets to a show in Madrid (city may be wrong) again No purchase necessary so it was 6 of 1 half a dozen of the other

I’ve seen a lot of those posts too - it leads into where would people hear it if they are not a chart follower, fans of the artists, their algorithm doesn't push it to them or they don’t listen to mai

People always come out of the woodwork to say "I've never heard this song" when there's a long runner, in the UK or the US. People say it like it's something to brag over when to me, it just looks obt

I wouldn’t have thought that Dai Dai would’ve been number 1 if you remove the 3,866 sales that Rein Me In sold this week

If there is an option to enter without purchase (which there was for the Sam and Shakira competitions) then they are covered.

I know I’m really old and miserable about the state of the charts nowadays, but imo this just doesn’t compare to the previous records held by Frankie Laine/Bryan Adams etc. On paper, yes, a new record, but in terms of people physically going and buying these songs, it just isn’t the same. I get that we’ve evolved and streaming is the fairest and most popular way to calculate nowadays but it just feels like a bit of a meh record to have taken this title.

Goodness Shania Twain did quite poor didn't she! 😮

Following two number one albums, a Harry Styles support slot and all those variants I'd consider that quite a spectacular bomb!

Even though RMI has increased in units this week, is it actually on DCL-2 due to the increase being in physical sales and not streams?

The increase is down to downloads, not physicals. But yes, as explained on the page before, ACR is based on streaming increases and decreases only, so Rein Me In is on DCL-2 (this is mentioned in the sales report).

Haha agree that it’s not a particularly special record and tbf I like the Sam and Olivia song. I think my point is that people listening to these in multiple created playlists aren’t the same as physically buying these records. Like I said, totally get that times have changed and the ancient way doesn't work anymore. Just not sure any song nowadays should get the same credit.

The increase for Rein Me In this week was due to paid-for sales. Best way to word it

I’ve seen more tweets like this than people actually celebrating the record. It’s not just us getting old and out of touch like someone was saying the other day!

I dont really see your point here I've never seen any of the Avatars or Avengers films does that mean they dont deserve the title of the 3 highest grossing films of all time ?

Do you always need to play so oblivious? As if there’s no difference between a 3 hour movie and a 3 minute song. You know what those movies are at least, that is cultural impact, a lot of people don’t even know what Rein Me In is.

Its a pretty fair analogy considering how many people play dumb on things like this i even see people comment who on Taylor swift posts doesnt mean she isnt 1 of the biggest artist currently

Here's another take then the population of the UK is 70m , hyperthetically the 2 million sales of Rein me in was each 1 person that would only be 3 percent of the population actually buying it and 68 million still to "discover" it

I’ve seen a lot of those posts too - it leads into where would people hear it if they are not a chart follower, fans of the artists, their algorithm doesn't push it to them or they don’t listen to mainstream radio? (Not that it’s been particularly huge there - it’s #27 YTD and not in the current Top 40 radio chart).

Back in the day everyone knew about charts and who was where - popular music was inescapable (TOTP along with artists performing on morning, afternoon, and weekend TV).

It’s very easy in 2026 to ‘stay in your lane’ and only be exposed to music you like and your algorithm rewards you with more of the same - probably one of the reasons new acts are finding chart breakthrough success such a challenge.
