BOP IDOL 8 - WHOLE LOTTA HISTORY

cba697b0accde14605e1df57b6061ead.jpg

Welcome to the eighth edition of Bop Idol, the song contest devoted to music from the 21st Century. As Camera Obscura won the last contest, I am your host. For my theme, I have chosen songs by singers, musicians or groups with a lot of history behind them. Specifically, there must be a gap of 10 years or more between the first single, EP or album released by the act you choose and the song you are entering. So any act that released their first single or album before 1990 is eligible. Acts that started in the 1990s are also eligible, but there must still be a gap of 10 years or more so the year range you can choose from will reduce. The rules below will explain this further. The first single or album released by your act doesn't need to be a hit, you can be as obscure as you like.

The rules:

1. The song you enter cannot have been a UK top 40 hit single. Please send other singles or album tracks.

2. Please avoid previous Bop Idol entries or a Top 20 finisher in any other song contest on the site.

3. Any other well known songs can still be vetoed by the mods, especially those with over 100 million Spotify streams.

4. Any acts with an artist forum on Buzzjack who are eligible for this theme are not allowed.

5. You can enter a song from 2000-2019 by any act who released their first single, EP or album before 1990, whichever one came first.

6. You can also enter a song from 2000-2019 by an act that released their first single, EP or album in 1990. If their first single/album/EP came out in 1991, you can enter a song from 2001-2019. If it came out in 1992, you can enter a song from 2002-2019, and so on until we get to acts that debuted in 1999 for which the song you enter should be from 2009-2019. The gap could be slightly less than 10 years, say from November 1993 to March 2003 but I'm not bothered about that.

7. This doesn't extend to acts that started after 1999, so for example, you can't send a song from 2016 by an act that started in 2004, the idea of this theme is to see what 20th Century acts have been up to in the 21st Century.

8. If an act were touring in the years that led up to their first record, the origin date will still be the year of their first release.

9. If you choose a singer who was previously part of a group, their first release will be deemed to be their first solo record.

10. A group that have slightly altered their name for legal reasons, like The Fizz, will be acceptable, as long as they still have some of the original members.

I think that covers everything! When you have chosen your song, please send me a PM with the artist name, song title and a youtube link.

As usual, this is an anonymous song contest, so please do not reveal or hint at your entry.

The closing date to submit an entry is Friday 18th September 23.59 BST.

Everybody's entry has now been seen by the mods and there are no vetoes!

I would like to say I've confirmed but I had to withdraw it as their first release was actually way later than 1990. 😣 I'll have something soon.

Edit: Alright, sent. I obviously skimmed through rule #6. I needed to read that one thoroughly.

Are there any restrictions in the genre of song at all?

Nice Bayeux Tapestry references and as you know King Rollo was one of the early Norman kings.

You can choose any genre.

Thanks!

Great idea for a theme, I don’t know how you guys come up with them, but I love it! Need to get my thinking cap on now.

Ok I need some help here so I can understand this correct!!!

It’s ok to send something from an artist who started in 1994, but the song has to be anything released past 2004, regardless if the said artist had bunch of other releases in between 1994-2004, correct?!

Because at first I thought we have to find an artist with 10 year gap between releases lol, and I was like omg this is going to be super hard!!!

Yes I'm pretty sure the rules are just that the artist needs to have debuted before 2000 and the song needs to have been released at least 10 years after their debut (and in 2000-2019 obvz).

Love that you found a way to make the theme of this more retro adjacent! Nothing is coming to mind for me that fits the criteria immediately so will have to have a search.

Yes, they can still have been making music in the intervening years.

I almost hinted on what mine is because of my tired brain yesterday failing to process one small part of the rules and making sure I understand everything. At least I'm not getting vetoed (yet). 😅
