Posted November 8, 200717 yr Key question to find out out why so many buzzjack members are keen to follow the charts, is it because you like a certain artist, and you like to follow their moves in the chart, or is it because you like Stats and figures. For me, I guess is a bit of both, I like to follow how Kylie does in the chart and how much she sells, and where she lands in the chart. I've also added a poll, to see what wins.
November 8, 200717 yr Hi Mikey, I was a late starter with music. I was 11 when I "discovered" the charts. I almost immediately started writing them up every week from January 1981 until around 1994. By this time the Top 40 book came out so I didn't feel the need to write them up anymore. I guess the charts just fascinate me..especially unusual chart runs (Snow Patrols' "Chasing Cars" at the moment is a matter of interest). I remember in '91 with Bryan Adams and every Sunday thinking surely THIS week it's gonna drop!!! It was great when it hit 16 weeks at No.1. I was sure 2 Unlimited was gonna topple it!! In 1984 I had my first 30 place climb when Macca and the Frogs climbed 39-9. I remember thinking at the time this songs either dropped out or climbed 30 places and I was sure it had vacated the 40..but no. I like to buy my fave artists singles to help them up the chart. It's just a matter of giving support.
November 8, 200717 yr it's both for me ^_^ I do like the stats and like to be up to date with the cuurrent chart toppers all over the world but I also want to know how my fave artist do atm, how much they sale etc.. :)
November 8, 200717 yr A bit of both... I like to keep up on how my favourite artists/bands are doing and also keep up-to-date on the stats and figures, sales, etc. xXx
November 8, 200717 yr I would have to say both, love checking sales trends...seeing how hype measures up with sales or talent and sales...but especially like to see how my fave artist is doing :D
November 8, 200717 yr Stats and figures mainly. Been following them since getting in to music in about 1972. More interested in the album chart these days though. Edited November 8, 200717 yr by Crazy Chris
November 8, 200717 yr Both here too... I'm a weirdo who loves stats and dates and figures, and I relish knowing that 'Wannabe' by Spice Girls actually didn't enter at #1 as everyone always assumes, but climbed up the following week... that sort of statistical geekiness :( Also, it's nice to know what's current and how my favourite acts are doing! ^_^

It's amazing that almost everyone I know assumes Wannabe entered at 1. I have to get the stat book out to prove them wrong!!!! It's so frustrating when someone challenges you with their chart "knowledge". A friend of my brothers argued blind that The Pogues' "Fairytale.... was no.1 in '87. We had to get printouts of the chart to convince him he was talking c**p. I think the Petshop Boys might have had something to say about that!!
November 8, 200717 yr To follow a certain artist, i dont usually care if someone there is no one i find interesting on the charts.
November 8, 200717 yr Smash Hits magazine is 100% responsible for my addiction. Back in early 1988, they started to print an empty Top 20 chart at the back of the magazine that you had to complete whilst listening to the Top 40. I used the magazine for about a few weeks before going out and buying a notebook to start writing them down instead, including all 40 records ..... something I did by hand for about 7 years, before switching to computer and I have been doing it ever since. The fact that I am employed as a Statistician may also have something to do with why this has been my biggest habit (hobby) since I was 15 years old. Oh, and Aswad (Don't turn around) had just replaced Kylie Minogue (I should be so lucky) at No. 1 that first week that I got hooked. So, although I'm getting older - it's nice to see Kylie is still around getting older with me. :w00t:
November 8, 200717 yr I only got into music last year tbh :o I first heard 'Grace Kelly' and I loved it so I started listening to more and more.. Then I started listening to the charts just to see how my Fav artists were doing ^_^ The I once saw the Midweeks on C4 and i was realy interested :w00t: Edited November 8, 200717 yr by Jonny
November 8, 200717 yr Both reasons...I like the stats but if someone I love is releasing I like to see where they chart
November 8, 200717 yr i mainly became interested around the time of push the buttons launch, as i started to become a suga-obsessive. it kinda progressed to when i joined here for the chart info on the sugas and mutya. tbh im not interested in the stats unless they are related to my fave artists
November 8, 200717 yr Both I guess. Sales and things interest me, not sure why. And I obviously love to see my favourite artists succeed.
November 8, 200717 yr Being honest Mikey ... to follow a certain artist or artists that I'm interested in. Although when I see the figures overall ... I also like brushing up on my maths and doing my own percentage increases, etc. But I voted - fave artist! By the way ... thanks for your hard work on this site ... its only recently I see the hard work that is involved. Norma

I used the magazine for about a few weeks before going out and buying a notebook to start writing them down instead, including all 40 records ..... something I did by hand for about 7 years, before switching to computer and I have been doing it ever since. You're lucky! Smash Hits started me off on an expense that has lasted for almost 22 years now! At the end of 1985 they gave away a free giant poster which had pictures of the top stars of the year on one side and spaces to write down each weeks Top 10 singles on the other. Around March as I studied the previous charts I realised that I had all the number 1s since Christmas except 1 and I went out and bought it. I decided to buy the no 1s for the rest of that year and..... welll let's just say it's been a very long year! :) My main reason for following the charts would be the stats aspect, especially as most of my favourites tend not to make them very often. Seeing this thread reminded me of something I read years ago in the foreward to one of the Guinness US Chart books. I had a quick look there and found the book in question - The Billboard Book of US Top 40 Albums. This quote was written by Joel Whitburn back in July 1987 "Competition in the weekly Top 40 race is ferocious; it is, perhaps, a more highly competitive race than those fought in sports arenas. It is the one race that continues all year round, it never starts over, and yet provides new standings every week of the year" You could expand that and say that while, for example, the football leagues has more or less the same teams fighting it out year after year and each person tends to have one favourite with the Top 40 you're constantly getting new acts (and new favourites) coming along all the time with old favourites returning from time to time as well Edited November 8, 200717 yr by Shaky Fan
November 8, 200717 yr It all started in the late 80s for me, when I was completley obsessed with the charts and music - for 2 or 3 years back in 87-89 (ish) I would write down the Top 20 and tape the chart every week. I lost my way for a few years, but got back into the charts in the mid 90s when I was about 18/19, and was hooked with teh chart all over again. From 98 I would write down the Number 1 singles and albums, and I kept this up until 2004 when the internet took over. So, I guess it s a mix of passion for chart music and a love of stats.
November 8, 200717 yr I love looking at Chart sales for some reason :P Really interests me. So its deffo both for me.
