Tina Turner, Texas, Bruce Springsteen, Depeche Mode, Bon Jovi,

Janet Jackson, Dido, Radiohead, The Who, Keane, Maroon 5,

Mike Oldfield, White Stripes, Killers, Anastacia, & Scooter, have all

had No.1 ALBUMS in the UK.

 

It is harder to find Acts who had several Hit Singles & Albums, who

were unable to gain No.1's in either Chart.

 

Roxette are such an Act - never higher than No.3 in the Singles Chart,

& never higher than No.2 in the Albums Chart.

R.E.M. for the singles chart?

 

R.E.M. have never been higher than No.3 in the Singles Chart,

but they have had 7 No.1 Albums - more than any other USA Group.

Some real surprises there, especially Dido and The Who, but two of the biggest successes album wise.

Pulp :( I was gutted when Robson and Jerone and then Simply Red kept both their #2 singles off the top of the chart.

 

Supergrass - Outhere Brothers kept Alright off #1.

AC/DC have had 19 hits but never a top 10 hit

Nat King Cole has never had a number 1

'Richard III' was also #2 and REALLY deserved #1 for Supergrass. :(

 

I guess I could mention Sophie Ellis-Bextor. Yes there's Spiller, but she wasn't officially credited and wasn't mentioned on the single cover etc. She came close solo wise so many times.

I wish that Delta Goodrem and Kelly Clarkson could have a number one here, im confident that kelly will get one, but i don't think Delta ever will... It's not fair how someone as talented as her can be sooooo ignored in the UK, i guess her first album did well (almost a million copies) but if she released her new one here, would it even sell 5? :lol:

I was going to add Bananarama to the list, although that was for singles. I don't know about albums.

 

I don't think there is any point arguing about who deserves it in the musical sense. Save that for the normal chart squabbles, but I do think it's a shame when an artist almost gets to number one several times, but doesn't quite get there. On the other hand, it can sometimes be a millstone for them if they have a flukey number one with a song that is of a lower standard than some of the ones that almost made it.

 

Green Day, Metallica, New Order,& Faithless, all had No.1 Albums.

Oddly, The Clash never had a No.1 Album, (2 No.2 Albums), but they

had a No.1 Single - 'Should I Stay Or Should I Go', in 1991.

 

Nat 'King' Cole, Pulp, & Supergrass, all had No.1 Albums, but no No.1

Singles. Nat 'King' Cole would almost certainly have had No.1 Singles

with 'Too Young', (1951), & 'Unforgettable' (first Quarter of 1952), had

the Singles Chart been around at the time. They were No.1 for 12, & 10

Weeks, respectively, in the Sheet Music Charts.

or the Album Chart.

It'd be quicker to name the artists that HAVE had #1 singles in the UK. There are tons who haven't been #1.

 

yeah its not a very well thought out thread...should have been something more to it...as you've could list like loads of random people....Morcheeba - the've never had a #1, neither have Catherine Wheel, nor Tindersticks or That Petrol Emotion, not dEUS, not Diesel Park West or either The Frazer Chorus, The Alarm - no #1's there, and none for Del Amitri either, Thunder - oh how unlucky - not a number #1 there either, the cult - zilch, roni size - still waiting and adeva - not a hope in chance, the Black Crowes - cant see any listed and super furry animals - none - made them furious and the levellers - nowt for these either - no number ones between between them etc etc etc
