November 19, 200816 yr Anyone remember the days when, if an artist had new material, they'd release a new album? :P
November 19, 200816 yr I got Rihanna's Reloaded album this year after waiting a year. i think the new songs do appeal

November 19, 200816 yr I do - unfortunately The Killers already have the deluxe planned before we even get to see the original edition next week! And Dido has hers out this week. I do thinks its shocking the Leona's label won't allow her fans to seperately download the new tracks.
November 19, 200816 yr And Dido has hers out this week. I do thinks its shocking the Leona's label won't allow her fans to seperately download the new tracks. I didn't think it was a great idea at all. It's a model which has been pushed in America with some success. I suppose the record companies will argue that if, as a collective, we didn't download so much music for free they wouldn't have to resort to these retail tactics. Though I'm not quite sure if there's much difference between this and bands releasing 3 or 4 versions of a single with a different B-side on each forcing hardcore fans to buy the lot. It's a tactic which has been used for donkeys years in indie music and for some reason they never get the same stick.
November 19, 200816 yr The best deluxe edition i own is Beyonces B'Day - that was a great re-issue, it had a load of new tracks + a DVD with about 10 videos on. Rihannas on the other hand was just pathetic. If i'd have known Disturbia was gonna be a single and eventually on Now 71 then i wouldn't have bothered buying it. They have re-packaged the DVD edition now! Saying that, if one of my favourite artists release a deluxe then i'll buy it regardless, and if, like Britney, a standard and deluxe are issued at the same time i'll always go for the deluxe
November 19, 200816 yr Deluxe editions annoy me so much, espcially artists like Leona and Rihanna. When it's Chris Brown or Kelly Rowland, whose albums didnt sell too much to start with its fine but when the album sold bucketloads its extremly annoying.

End of annoyance

When it's Chris Brown or Kelly Rowland, whose albums didnt sell too much to start with its fine but when the album sold bucketloads its extremly annoying. Kelly's wasn't so much Deluxe Ed as Cutshop Edition- she removed as many songs as she added, and just remixed a couple of the others. It would have been nicer to have left them all on, as there is space on the CD and i don't own (nor do you see) the old one. GA are doing the same. Deluxe DVD ed. just in time for Xmas of the album they released 2 weeks ago. Planned from outset but for a fan it's a long time to wait. Kinda pisses me off. Even the Dido album is getting a Deluxe release this week simultaneously. But it has 3 extra tracks or something. But at the point of release it feels to me that if you buy the standard you basically only get 80% of the album which is a rip off. I don't mind deluxes with videos, remixes, live tracks, B-sides or previous singles on but when it is new studio recordings the choice is basically buy half an album for normal price or pay an inflated one to hear the whole thing
November 19, 200816 yr I reckon we'll get a "Catfights & Spotlights - Deluxe" early next year, with a new song as the lead single to try and drag it back up the charts

November 19, 200816 yr I reckon we'll get a "Catfights & Spotlights - Deluxe" early next year, with a new song as the lead single to try and drag it back up the charts They'll need one or it wont even outsell 'One Touch'. :(
November 19, 200816 yr Its whether it doing badly will lead to them scrapping the project prematurely rather than throwing more money at a deluxe, or cause them to think it is required. Of course it may pick up over Xmas, and with the new single "no can do" next month. It's pretty good!
November 19, 200816 yr They'll need one or it wont even outsell 'One Touch'. :( i know. -_- Pretty dire times to be a babes fan. I really like the new album, Better than bloody Change. Mind you, Road Kill is better than Change
November 19, 200816 yr Morally, it's just WRONG. If they wish to release two versions of an album (the standard "poor" version, and the deluxe version) then fine, but they should be releasing them at the same time and offering fans a CHOICE. The way it's done now, releasing the deluxe months after the original, it's just a way of robbing the diehard fans, who are the very people they SHOULDN'T be p***ing off. "Here, have the album for a £15. Now buy it again with an extra track and a nice spanking photo on the booklet for another £15!!!". I know record companies are in it for the money, but WHERE are the ethics? I'm sure there a lot of people here who are thrilled for Leona Lewis now her re-released album is heading for #1, but it's setting such a TERRIBLE precedent. The record companies are FAST losing their right to moan about illegal downloading when they're off pulling stunts like this.
November 19, 200816 yr It's a cheap, naff and tacky record company way of exploiting fans - especially the dedicated who rush to buy the product when it's originally released, probably in the first week, helping the album get that all-important first-week chart position. It's a pretty shoddy and nasty way to get money out of you..... and it also encourages people to not buy an album on its release but to illegally download it - and then wait for the inevitable 'deluxe' rip-off release. If this was genuinely for the fans and not a calculated, devious way to rip them off - surely the companies should offer a return policy - whereby you return your crappy original purchase...and pay a small amount for the re-release. I think artists should stand up and shout off about this more, too - I didn't see Leona Lewis, Amy Winehouse or Duffy arguing that their loyal fans are being right-royally ripped-off by the increasingly desperate record companies. Does their silence mean they support it? It stinks... but while people are stupid enough to be swindled by these 'deluxe editions' - then the record companies will continue to con you and rake in your money.

Unfortunately there are a lot of stupid people out there. Look at the midweeks with Leona's "deluxe" of a year old album. I like the idea of being able to exchange the old versions for the new ones, some acts have done that before have they not?

On a slightly releated note, the DVD release of the excellent Children of Men was reissued as a 2 disc, and the distributor offered a free upgrade as the original release was so poor with extras.

See, that sort of tactic is FINE. It shows the companies are actually willing to reward the old fans ASWELL as make some money from new ones. That's how it should be.
