I just had a walk down my local high street, and since Christmas at least 5 shops (6 if you include Woolworths) have shut for good.

A jewellers, a card & gift shop, Butchers,Shoe shop and a charity shop.

The ones still open are offering 75% off everything, and most were empty, only one or two people in them and they are not buying.

Yes its Sunday, but last year these same shops were busy, and the sales were only offering between 10-50% off.

I think a lot of high streets are going to be decimated in the next few months.

How is your high street doing?

Being down in the South East we are pretty immune from the credit cruch etc hasn't really affected our area and my High St always seems to be packed

Well I hope you stay lucky, because in other areas its going to resemble ghost towns.

Our turn will probably come but certainly I have not noticed any real difference in our High St which admittedly is a pretty large one and mostly national chains

Maybe it is the mass discounting that is getting people to spend atm as opposed to prosperity but atm things seem ok down here

With very low interest rates, low inflation, High St discounting and so on those actually IN work have never had it so good but of course many in work won't be in work for ages

Mine seems to be doing OK. Addmitedly it's mainly full of massive chain stores in the main centre, and because we're a tourist city, the little shops shouldn't suffer too much. BUT it was a lot quieter in town yesterday. I work at Pizza Hut in an out of town shopping centre too, and that was quite a bit quieter than it has been over the past two months... but i'm putting that down to the end of the Christmas rush.

Northampton's usually busy, but a few shops have been shutting down, inc a shoe shop, card shop and Woolies. La Senza's opened up and a Nando's will replace Woolies.

Loads of people buy online these days. I can see shops closing but I think the high-street will always be around, though, in the future it may just be all mass-chains as independent businesses won't be able to survive.

High Wycombe seems relatively unaffected. The High Street was dying anyway, as they opened a brand spanking new shopping centre earlier in 2008 (bad timing hey?) away from it which has now become the town centre now.

The shopping centre seems as busy as at the beginning although there have been rumours House of Fraser are looking to pull out already.

Other than that it's only really been the national chains we all already know about (Woolies, Zaavi, Officers Club etc.)

All the antique shops are seemingly fine, none are closing. God knows how  . My "local" town might actually be getting a new shop.... a Marks & Spencers. Don't see the need for 4 "supermarkets" in a town of 7500 though.
I live in London and my local shopping center shows no signs of a credit crunch - It was packed on Sunday and I waited 30 minutes to get into the carpark and an hour to get out!

Still?! :o But I thought the awful owner said they weren't true at all in the Bucks Free Press :s.

I'm surprised The Works is still going even though I swear they've been having "closing down" sales

for the past few months or maybe even a year hah.

As long as Coffee Cup remains all is well good haha.

Wycombe love <3.

Woolies is all that has gone in Cupar.

Our woolies is one of the last to shut, it closes tomorrow :(

I've been seeing a hell of a lot of "Closing Down Sale" signs all over the town centre in Dundee... The once bustling Welgate shopping centre resembles a ghost town with more empty spaces than shops actually trading, basically, the place seems to be dying on its arse... Oh, and now Virgin/Zavvi appears to be going the way of Fopp and Woolies into administration....

Craig is right, London/SE seems to be kind of immune to the effects, but outside, it's gonna be disaster in 2009.....

Manchester is alive and kicking and hasn't had a Woolworths since the 1970s so even better!

Only Zavvi has got the snip and an identikit shoe shop, but that's all from what I gather.

Oh yeah I read that...But is there smoke without fire? The few times I've been in there it's been half dead, and the people who are there are browsers not shoppers. I just don't see how they can keep a store that size going. High Wycombe just isn't the right place for it, it's too expensive, maybe a Debenhams would have worked better.

The Works closing sale has been going since it opened years ago hasn't it? I think they'll be having their closing sale after nuclear holocaust.

Which one's Coffee Cup? There's so many coffee places there now, I get muddled easily :( I'm old and past it.

Gawwdd I know right. I'm pretty sure the majority of people just go there for Café Zest because that was insanely packed when I worked there. A bit cheapskate of those who clearly spend all their pennies in Primark then just go there to look sophisticated ha!

Ahaha indeed, it shall remain to be like Eisenegger when that was 'closing down' every week. We've lost The Passion for Perfume shop now too :[, it was the place with the most value for money for fragrances aswell </3.

The one in the Chilterns . They do the most amazing cakes.

God yeah, it's funny coming into town and you just see HORDES of unwashed coming out of Primark, and then one soliary shopper in House of Fraser deciding not to buy anything. GUTTING.

I LOVED Eisenegger, their jeans got me through my uni days at Southampton; the Wycombe one was a bit naff though.

Is Coffee Cup the one next to the Post Office? If so, OMG yes, I used to go there for lunch when I worked in the town centre. Their cakes were indeed amazingness.
