as great as these songs by Pet Shop Boys, Taylor Swift and Calvin Harris are...will they not all be uber-cheap in one month from now and suffer the same fate of Breathe Slow (low top ten)!?!

You might have to add Beyonce - Halo to the list .....

However, one of the reasons why I thought the #10 Special BJSC was not a good idea is if Nelly Furtado - Say It Right wins (with the likes of the Sugababes in the top 3...), then the stigma of cheap entries in the proper BJSC will be significantly diluted.

If I have reserved two artists, do I have to use one of them when it comes to song confirmation? Or could I change my mind there and then provided somebody else hasn't reserved that song/band?

[i don't know if that made sense  ]

I'm sure that people will still be able to differentiate between the spin-offs (where cheapness is welcome) and the normal contest

I just don't get what possible benefit can come from sending such a cheap song, even if it did win (which they never do), what sense of pride would you have by sending a song that is new to nobody, and you know that nobody had been introduced to your song via the competition...I mean who honestly hadn't heard Breathe Slow before it came 7th in last month's final

I'd rather come last with an unknown song that scored 30 points from 6 or 7 different members than come 1st with a super cheap song that everyone will have already heard by this time last month like Taylor Swift or Calvin Harris...for me the best thing about doing well is knowing that the chances are, most people wouldn't have heard of that song had you not sent it

in your case, Nonsuch have introduced me to fantastic songs such as Lonely (Are You Coming Home), When Did I Become Such A Bitch and Into The Nightlife, so why ruin that brilliant reputation by sending Halo that 90% of people on here will have already heard!?! if this contest goes down the cheap route this month, and all of the cheap entries come top 5 then I will seriously question what the point of this competition continuing would be

and Lily as well.

The album is set for top3, and it's a proven winner with The Fear coming 2nd and f*** You winning....

My other two back ups are pretty unknown especially Sophie, but I knew other members would have gone down the PSB route :heehee:

I don't think Breathe Slow's "fate" was really a bad one . Also, i find that listening to familiar songs and then a song i've never heard before allows me to get into that song far easier. Not sure how relevant that is though :P

That is exactly why I was so against the UK #10 special game because of the cheapness factor which is why I did not participate in the early BJSCs until cheap songs started performing poorly.

As a result I think the cheapness genie could have been let back out of the bottle.

fair point, I guess we'll see what happens next month, I don't mind a few cheap songs in the top ten but if they start dominating again, I think people will start pulling out because it will just become boring...

having said that, in light of Alesha 'only' coming 7th, I can't see any of these entries winning, not even the ones Mdice have planned

The cheapness genie never went away.

Very early BJSC was cheap as hell, then again we were all learning about the contest.

Britney wouldn't win a contest now, but she won the first contest. The contest has changed quite a bit, i quite honestly think a cheap song won't win again. Unless it is rather epic.

As new people enter you are always going to have a mix that changes. Some countries are cheap to their core *coughalleciancough* others are far removed from cheapness and send some high high quality unknown songs, FSR Rontvia, Kopecka and Mdice being good examples.

Then there are some who send a healthy mix such as Myself, KoS etc. etc. etc. This is what makes the contest imo.

You can't eradicate the cheap songs completely because what one person sees as cheap is not necessarily the same as what another sees as cheap, there are of course the highly obvious exceptions, eg: Lady GaGa, Sugababes, Britney, GA, Lily Allen........

there is a difference between something like Lady GaGa, who was sent 6 months before she made it big, long before she'd even been tipped for having a release in the UK and Calvin Harris, whose song is due out next month and is a practically guaranteed top 3 hit, or Taylor Swift, who will have already been in the top ten for two or three weeks by the time the final comes around

I don't look back at 'So What', 'Maneater' or 'Up' and ever think of the BJSC, whereas some of the more unknown songs have come to define the contest, like Will You Remember Me Tomorrow, Release Me and Into The Nightlife

i did mean sending GaGa now. as opposed to then lol.

oh, still, sending an album track/b-side is never as cheap as sending a single :heehee: I never actually saw your Gabriella Cilmi entries as cheap at all seeing as they were album tracks and you were introducing people to them, which to me is the essence of the contest :D

:heehee: They should have been singles tho <_<

I do think we are always going to have a cheap element, this contest looks like it'll be a cheap one, the next could have no cheap songs, which i very much doubt knowing what i want to enter :kink:

There will always be cheap entries though, most of the time sent by the same people (Allecian and myself and a few others).

I agree though that a contest full of cheap songs would take away the best element of this contest, which is discovering new music. But if this contest just happens to have slightly more well known artists than usual, then so be it. At least people arent entering Circus & My Life Would Suck Without You.

I would much prefer to send something up and coming or relatively unknown - I agree with Rich (both Rich's actually!) that this contest should be about hearing new music not cheap entries ^_^

Like I have said before, I do see all your points for being against cheap songs, or whatever, but if the song is good enough then I will DEFINATELY give it points. But if I'm marking songs when I'm listening to them, and the cheap songs have the same sort of scores, then I will give the Cheaper song, the least amount of points ;)

EXAMPLE (Beyonce - Halo):

Say if I gave Beyonce - Halo a 9.3 or whatever. and then Billy & Bob ended up with a 9.3 as well, even though I slightly prefer Beyonce, I would give her the lowest amount of points Like I'd give Billy & Bob my 12 and then Beyonce my 10 pointer...

(If that makes sense)

But if there are too many cheap entries in one contest then I definately see your point about the contest becoming a bit pointless... I would say I'm personally happy with around 3 cheap entries, per contest. Which is what this contest I think is looking likely to be. I wouldn't class Lady Sovereign "cheap" especially seeing as she's pretty much hated on this board.

it does make sense Jonjo, I gave Alesha a 9/10 rating but gave her no points as she instantly came bottom of my 9/10 pack for being cheap and as i had 13 songs which I rated at least 9/10 she fell to 13th in my ranking by default

I didn't mention Lady Sovereign as being cheap because I'm aware that she is quite disliked on here, I'm talking more about Calvin Harris and Taylor Swift in particular and quite inevitably, The Veronicas

Ooops  I forgot you didn't mention Lady Sov :heehee: Taylor Swift, definately, especially seeing as she's number 1 on iTunes video and the Fake version is climbing in the Top 70-80 region of iTunes, screams the fact it's going to be pretty big over here  Calvin Harris is usually quite love/hate on here (Not as hated as the Sov but still... :P But it will be a big hit the time the contest comes around I suppose :heehee:

Oh and Simon if you are wanting to send 'Love Story' try a remix :heehee: *cough*JStaxRadioEdit*cough* :kink:

Edited by Jonjo

I've got no idea why Lady Sovereign is so hated seeing as So Human is nothing like much of the rest of her stuff (which has rather obvious reasons for being disliked, but still, how anyone can hate Love Me Or Hate Me is beyond me ), and is VERY 2009 pop...just watch it get loved all of a sudden when it goes top ten in April!
