Posted February 8, 200916 yr Lily Allen’s comeback single The Fear has remained at the top of the UK charts for a second week whilst Lady GaGa’s former No.1 single, Just Dance, stays put at No.2. Tinchy Stryder heads back up to No.3 whilst there are new entries in the top ten from Eminem and Daniel Merriweather. Londoner Lily Allen has equalled the two weeks at the top of the UK charts that her debut single Smile managed almost three years ago. The Fear has remained in control for a second time whilst Lady GaGa stays at No.2 with Just Dance, which is now spending its sixth consecutive week inside the top three. Tinchy Stryder’s Take Me Back, which features vocals from Taio Cruz, climbs back up a place to No.3, its current peak. The highest new entry this week goes to US rapper Eminem. 2009 marks ten years since he first had a hit in the UK charts; his debut single My Name Is peaked at No.2 in 1999 and since then he has had seven UK No.1’s including The Real Slim Shady, Stan, Without Me, Lose Yourself, Just Lose It, Like Toy Soldiers and Smack That. The first new single from the rapper in over two years, Crack A Bottle features Dr Dre and 50 Cent and instantly gives Marshall Mathers his eighteenth UK top ten single despite having little airplay and no video, proving that he is one of the rare breed of stars who can still sell on name alone. With the song having been added to the Radio 1 playlist this week, it is incredibly likely that this song could have chart topping potential in the coming weeks but for now it is an instant No.4 hit. Alesha Dixon scores her second consecutive top five hit with Breathe Slow, up a place to No.5 this week, still solely on download sales and matching the peak of previous single The Boy Does Nothing. It is the sixth time that Alesha has graced the UK top five if you include the Mis-Teeq singles All I Want (#2, 2001), One Night Stand (#5, 2001), B With Me (#5, 2002) and Scandalous (#2, 2003). Kid Cudi’s Day ‘N’ Nite falls back three places to No.6 this week after four weeks around whilst James Morrison & Nelly Furtado slide two places to No.7 with the former No.2 hit Broken Strings, which is currently No.1 in Germany. Australian singer Daniel Merriweather has been ‘one to watch’ for the last few years ever since he rose to fame as the vocalist on Mark Ronson’s 2007 No.2 hit Stop Me. He also featured on Wiley’s recent top twenty single Cash In My Pocket. Change, which features American rapper Wale, is the first time he takes the lead credit and the highly anticipated single storms into the UK top ten at No.8 following a simultaneous physical and digital release. Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It) is down a place for Beyoncé at No.9 and Kevin Rudolf slides three spots to No.10 with Let It Rock. This weeks UK top ten therefore includes five American acts, three Brits, an Australian/American collaboration and a British/Canadian collaboration. Barbadian singer Shontelle continues her gallop up the charts with R&B song T-Shirt. Last week’s No.25, it soars up to No.13 this week. Pussycat Dolls notch up yet another top twenty hit as Watcha Think About That leaps twenty places north to No.16 this week. Katy Perry leaps back up four places from No.22 to No.18 with Hot ‘N’ Cold, the former top five hit quickly on its way to achieving gold sales status of over 400,000 copies in the UK, following the success of I Kissed A Girl which has now sold well over half a million copies here. US rock act The All American Rejects look increasingly likely to score their biggest UK hit with Gives You Hell, which jumps eighteen places to No.20 this week. Lady GaGa’s upcoming second single Poker Face is still floating around the top 30. Waiting for TV and radio airplay to kick in, the single manages to climb four places to a new peak of No.24 this week on its fourth week inside the top thirty. Coldplay have a new entry to the top forty at No.28 with Life In Technicolor II. Originally an instrumental track on the album Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends, the new vocal version is taken from the recent Prospekt’s March EP and becomes Coldplay’s first top forty hit since the huge chart topping single Viva La Vida last June. US rock act The Airborne Toxic Event are up six places to No.33 with the now physically released Sometime Around Midnight whilst The Script move back up with Break Even, last week’s No.40, up to No.36 this week. Rounding off the chart, finally making its debut inside the top forty on its seventh week inside the top seventy five is Strong Again by N-Dubz which is in at No.40. Yet another single to be taken from their platinum selling debut album, Uncle B, Strong Again gives the British hip hop trio their fourth consecutive top forty hit following You Better Not Waste My Time, Ouch and Papa Can You Hear Me. Bruce Springsteen stays at the top of the album charts with Working On A Dream whilst Kings Of Leon move back up a place to No.2 with Only By The Night, now spending its twentieth consecutive week inside the top ten. American indie-folk band Fleet Foxes re-issued their eponymous debut album this week with a bonus disc and duly soar to a new peak of No.3 this week. Scottish indie-rock act The View return with their second album, Which Bitch, which debuts at No.4 this week whilst Lady GaGa slides a place to No.5 with The Fame. Elbow bounce back up eleven places to No.6 with the Mercury Music Prize winning album The Seldom Seen Kid, James Morrison falls two places to No.7 with Songs For You, Truths For Me and The Killers move back up two places to No.8 with the former chart topper, Day & Age. Beyoncé falls two places to No.9 with I Am Sasha Fierce and The Script slide four places to No.10 with their eponymous debut album. Next week’s chart could well see Eminem, Dr Dre and 50 Cent challenge for the top spot with Crack A Bottle which has started to pick up airplay but it is more likely that Lily Allen will lead the way for a third week with The Fear. Lady GaGa, Kid Cudi vs. Crookers and Tinchy Stryder feat Taio Cruz should all remain high whilst Alesha Dixon will look to reach another new peak with Breathe Slow, with the physical due out on Monday. Other notable physical releases due out on Monday are expected from Innerpartysystem, The Killers, Morrissey, My Chemical Romance and Saint Etienne. Despite only releasing their new single, Desolation Row as a 12”, the download sales of the new My Chemical Romance single could well return them to the top ten. The US emo rock act were one of the biggest bands of 2006/2007 with the top ten singles Welcome To The Black Parade, Famous Last Words and Teenagers, and their fanbase should ensure them another hit in seven days time. February 9, 200916 yr I can't see it missing the top 40...the other two definitely will join them too MCR is available as a 12 inch at £4.99, I can't see many people buying it and hardly doing anything on downloads, you want to make a bet on it :P , and Saint Etienne's last single didn't even make a splash, I can see it doing the same thing. Innerpartysystem goodness knows never heard of them.

February 10, 200916 yr Author Note: this is my last chart commentary, I haven't really got the time to devote to it anymore, it takes a good 2-4 hours to write and my interest in the UK top 40 is waning severely, hopefully somebody else will step into my position, sorry to anybody who enjoys reading it, I've really loved doing it for the past year and a half but I have to put other things first now unfortunately :(

It's been a pleasure to read and I will sorely miss reading it. I just hope someone else does another one I can read. It was very interesting. If I could write like that, then sure, I'd probably take over, but I am $h!t at these sorta things so I won't bother  Thanks for these interesting and fascinating reads Rich. February 10, 200916 yr Author thanks for all of your kind words, they always are and always have been hugely apprecitated...I had actually thought about stopping doing it about three or four months back but decided to carry on for as long as possible, but now is unforutnately the time to give it up  thank you especially Harve, Kid Justice, Martin, Jester, Dindy and Jonjo who commented on a near weekly basis :D
February 11, 200916 yr I really cant see anyone else doing this other than you :( Yours is exactly how the commentaries should be written, just about chart facts, and less about opinions.
February 11, 200916 yr Would just like to echo Xylem's comment - I really enjoyed the chart commentaries as they provided so many interesting facts every week. I don't want to read someone's opinion on how good a song is - there are plenty threads on here and other forums for that. Many thanks for providing so many enjoyable reads - you'll be sorely missed.
