Why is it that Radio 1 has become so much more influential even though it's getting less listeners apparently these days? do the TV music channels have a lot less viewers now thanks to youtube or are there other reasons? I can count on one hand the number of UK top five hits unsupported by Radio 1 in the last couple of years.
March 5, 200917 yr Author I really havent got a clue. I guess other radio stations are less keen to support other songs that Radio 1 hasnt. TV airplay is definitely not as influential as before either. Plus its a lot harder for songs to get a good peak these days, most of the low profile songs go unnoticed.

March 6, 200917 yr Fantastic retro from 2003 there, Dannii Minogue's 'I Begin To Wonder'. :wub: It's good to see they once supported the amazing Placebo, 'The Bitter End' is a wonderful track. It's a shame they ignore them now in favour of far less talented identikit bands.

I would say that is complemented by my belief that as part of their contract R2 have to play as many GUARANTEED CHART SINGLE flops as poss ... i mean PSB!!!! The lads have clearly lost their pop sensibility if they think just a fab POP song of the moment ( assuming at best it is that) is going to make a career comeback with LEGS from (longterm) 80s hasbeandom a la Kylie - they of all people should know (if they still had 'it' ) such pop , especially sustainable comebacks needs a matching catchy image of the moment too.As decent blokes as they come across especially in comparison with contemporary HORRORS like Boy George and fake hypocritical BLOW head George Michael (He wasn't thoughtlessly drug driving it was his prescription meds **his lawyers declared after payment $$$$$** then he joked about his legal BULLSH!TING on Parky :puke2: ) ,their 2D gimmicky image was getting stale well over 10 years ago (imo) - so short of actually HAVING G.A. in their video i can't see why a decade of consistent lack of crossover general public hits is going to be turned around permanently just like that for them....????

Thanks for looking into it Xylem :D Capital FM and the Capital FM network of the time definitely playlisted Delta with a few of those songs. I should know, I was working there at the time! I also believe that the GWR networkplayed a couple of those songs on heavy rotation too. Certainly Born To Try, Lost Without You and Innocent Eyes were all played. I can count on one hand the number of UK top five hits unsupported by Radio 1 in the last couple of years. Radio 1's had a very solid listener base now for a long while now. It slipped down after the "Bannister effect" but has been on an upward trend since about June 2004, according to official stats. I think that the music industry has changed enormously in recent years and its means of exposure have done too. However, throughout all of this, radio has remained probably the most important means of getting your music heard and respected. Radio 1 ought to be playing ALL the best new music and, indeed, breaking it. It also reaches an enormous audience all on its own. That's what makes it so important. However, it would also be fair to say that, for most 'pop' acts, getting playlisted on Capital FM is the most important thing. Capital is the benchmark for commercial radio, which, of course, reaches more listeners than Radio 1 and also reaches the very core audience who will be buying pop records. Getting a slot on Capital means you will get a slot across the rest of the Capital Network, probably on Galaxy and a look-in at the Heart Network, all within the same company. All the other pop station groups usually follow Capital's lead too.
