Thanks to the 35 people who participated in last week's poll jump.gif

Official results from week 1:

[ 13 ] The Cast Of Wonka - You've Never Had Chocolate Like This (#78)
[ 9 ] Flo Milli - Never Lose Me (#63)
[ 6 ] Travis Scott - MY EYES (#71)

BuzzJack's favourite top 100 hit for 2024 week 1 and auto-qualifying for the January monthly round is The Cast Of Wonka - You've Never Had Chocolate Like This.

Huh. I suppose I cannot ever underestimate how much BuzzJack doesn't like voting for rap songs in this. The first win of the year in a very limited field goes to a song from the soundtrack to Wonka, starring American/Frenchman Timothée Chalamet as the titular lead who also took it upon himself to provide vocals for most of the songs from the soundtrack, he's better known as an actor than a singer of course so this is unsurprisingly his first chart appearance. (Among the other cast who pop up on the song, albeit seemingly just for 3 words, is Matt Lucas who is a chart veteran both in his own name and in character as literal UK #1 artist Andy Pipkin). 'You've Never Had Chocolate Like This' doesn't seem to actually be the most popular song from the soundtrack but it's the one we've got in the low end of the top 100 seemingly just because it's included on the soundtrack twice in two slightly different versions. I've embedded the longer version which includes contributions from other cast members but the shorter version is billed solely to Chalamet. It's got the nod of approval from 37% of participants which is another pretty weak winner but to its credit it did at least manage to reach double figure votes and beat the 'none of the above' option by 1 vote. Not so much for the other two contenders, although they do both at least pass the 5 vote threshold. Flo Milli's debut hit comes in 4 votes behind Timothée & co. leaving the wooden spoon in the hands of the latest revolving door hit from Travis Scott's 'UTOPIA' album.

Weekly winners for 2024:
01 // 11/01/24 // The Cast Of Wonka - You've Never Had Chocolate Like This

Weekly winners for previous years: 2023

~

After the slow start to the year we have a more healthy 10 new entries this week totalling 34 minutes and 18 seconds, although worth noting that 2 of these 'new' songs are in fact from last decade. The fresh hits include veritable BuzzJack favourites like Lewis Capaldi (twice) and D-Block Europe. Will be interesting to see if 'none of the above' still comes into play in the results this week, I don't think any of these songs are likely to be universal BuzzJack faves but I also will hope that most people will like at least something here thinking.gif

Vote for as many or as few songs as you want and would be ideal if you can make sure you've heard all the songs before voting if possible!

Staying on time (close enough) with the weekly polls of the year so far, let's try and keep that up, next poll up on Sunday night / early Monday morning (21st into 22nd) x Don't forget to also vote in the December 2024 monthly round if you haven't already, that remains open for nearly another week as well (deadline 4pm on Sunday 21st).

The Last Dinner Party is the best of the mix by far. Also voted for Strangers, Ophelia, Head Down and Heather on the Hill.

1. D-Block Europe - Skims
2. Drake - Practice
3. Lewis Capaldi - Strangers
4. Liam Gallagher and John Squire - Just Another Rainbow
5. Lost Frequencies and Bastille - Head Down
6. Lewis Capaldi - A Cure For Minds Unwell
7. The Lumineers - Ophelia
8. The Last Dinner Party - Nothing Matters
9. Nathan Evans - Heather On The Hill
10. Bring Me The Horizon - Kool-Aid

Not a massive fan of any of these but I'll just about give DBE a vote. 'Skim's has a stupid chorus but it's very catchy.

'Practise' certainly isn't Drake's best but it's preferable to what he's releasing now. 'Strangers' and 'A Cure For Minds Unwell' both sound like any other Lewis Capaldi track but there's something about the former that I'm enjoying more than usual.

'Just Another Rainbow' has some nice instrumentation but naming all the colours of the rainbow just sounds odd. 'Head Down' has some odd pronunciations but I don't hate it.

I really don't like the bottom 4. I found 'Ophelia' quite annoying. I'd rather hear 'Ho Hey' again. I hate the RP singing on 'Nothing Matters'. It sounds condescending, I feel like I'm being judged.

'Heather On The Hill' sounds like a bad mix between Ed Sheeran and Lewis Capaldi. 'Kool-Aid' it's just not my thing at all. The shouting vocals sound horrendous.

Voted for 5 songs this week and it's bottom half of the Top 100 (minus DBE) for the win! 'Ophelia' and 'Nothing Matters' both great, I found 'A Cure For Minds Unwell' far more interesting than 'Strangers', was pleasantly surprised by 'Head Down', and 'Heather On The Hill' I can't help but root for!

Liam Gallagher and John Squire - Just Another Rainbow (#16) - soaring vocal on this, great track
Bring Me The Horizon - Kool-Aid (#21) - not a particularly enjoyable listen
Drake - Practice (#27) - not a highlight from the album in question
Lewis Capaldi - Strangers (#37) - this is a lewis capaldi song
The Lumineers - Ophelia (#52) - considering ho hey is one of the worst songs of all time to ever grace the uk chart, this is surprisingly quite a nice song
Lewis Capaldi - A Cure For Minds Unwell (#59) - this is a better song definitely, just about scraping a vote i'd say
The Last Dinner Party - Nothing Matters (#71) - the repeated f-bombs in the overly posh voice gets me every time laugh.gif
D-Block Europe - Skims (#72) - law of diminishing returns have caught up with them eventually
Lost Frequencies and Bastille - Head Down (#78) - expectedly great vocals from dan, an all round solid track which i can see elevating into the top 40 in the coming weeks
Nathan Evans - Heather On The Hill (#87) - not a lot to write home about here

All the Ls this week! Liam, Lumineers, Lewis, LDP & LF.

and a reminder again about the December monthly poll that I also just bumped as it's missing a few regular voters jump.gif

1 'Kool-Aid' 9/10
2 'Just Another Rainbow' 8/10
3 'Ophelia' 7.5/10
4 'A Cure For Minds Unwell' 7/10
5 'Practice' 7/10
6 'Heather On The Hill' 6/10
7 'Head Down' 6/10
8 'Nothing Matters' 4.5/10
9 'Strangers' 3.5/10
10 'Skims' 0.5/10

Voted for the top 3, a good pair of fleeting rock hits to kick off the year proper, quite amazed that this is Bring Me The Horizon's highest charter since 'Drown' when it's one of their heaviest singles of late but it does go pretty hard and love the melody in the chorus, I guess it could have done without the edgy bridge (especially if those lyrics cost it Radio 1 support which I'm not totally sure I buy but I guess it's the best guess we have x) but otherwise very strong. Some of Liam's vocals on 'Just Another Rainbow' are admittedly pretty rough especially near the start but after getting through that I can appreciate a fab psychedelic instrumental here, I think this pair has the potential to have better songs on their album but still quite happy with this as a first single. The Lumineers song is not quite as strong as 'Ho Hey' for me but still a cute tune and particularly like the piano parts. 'A Cure For Minds Unwell' has a pretty strong chorus (and it may be the best he's managed to control his belting vocals on a hit single to date), easily the better of the two Lewis entries, 'Strangers' starts off sounding like a Sheeran reject and then launches into some very rough vocals in the chorus, glad this one isn't looking like being a big hit so far. I knew I'd heard 'Practice' on the Drake album before but didn't immediately remember it, it did come back to me when I heard it though, a solid Juvenile interpolation and liking the flow on the third verse but it's definitely just 'pretty good album track' territory so not something we desperately needed in the chart. I thought 'Heather On The Hill' sounded very promising from the first few seconds but then it threw that promise away as the rest of the song sounded way too overproduced veering close to the Avicii style folk dance style that I'm really not a fan of, overall still decent and I do like Nathan's vocals but wasted potential on this one. 'Head Down' sounds exactly as I expected a Lost Frequencies/Bastille collab to sound, which is to say it's perfectly serviceable but not something I'll ever be desperate to listen to. I didn't care for 'Nothing Matters' in BJSC and I still don't care for it now, it has the kind of aesthetic that I feel like I should like but it just feels like a bit of a nothing of a song and I really find the F-bomb in the chorus quite jarring, it feels like it's just put there to try and add some edge to an edgeless song. DBE kicking off the year strongly with a song that fails the 'don't make me cringe' challenge in the very first line and then again in the second line (and of course that's the chorus so comes back around a couple more times!), back to a very boring beat choice after the somewhat decent one on 'I Need It Now', and complete nothingburger verses from both members slathered in unpleasant autotune where just about the only vaguely memorable moment is Young Adz seriously still rapping about crypto in the year of our lord 2024. (I guess the inexplicable Emmanual Macron shoutout too). An early worst song of the year contender I fear x

(next poll will be up tomorrow, I don't think I have the energy to get it up tonight - in the mean time I have got the 2023 playoff round up at least x)
