I've just bought the race against the machine song. although its not the type of thing I am into, I'd much rather this be xmas number 1 than x factor, which has dominated the xmas charts over the past couple of years. Looking at the midweek sales figures, I'm actually shocked at how lowly the x factor song has done to date. In previous years including when Leon Jackson won, the figures were alot higher at this stage. Maybe this is a sign that the general public have finally cottoned on to what x factor is really about; Simon Cowell lining his pocket and not putting any long term commitment or effort into acts. I also really dont understand why Joe McElderry won it this year, his voice is pretty average but he is nothing special at all and certainly doesnt have the x factor. In a year or two's time, he will probably be dropped like alot of the previous acts on the show who havent done well.

joe is just fodder for simon. he doesn't really care about him if he did then he would have invested/paid for an original song but no he goes for covers yet again. joe is starting his career with not much credibility. its not RATM fault he is under performing this is simons.

the whole problem with x-factor is its about fame first then the music. where as most pop acts start with the music and then if they are successful fame is the by product it shouldn't be the goal. the music should be the foundation.

joe has only sung covers so far on tv with fickle fame first based on no original material to establish his worth. he has so much expectation, hype and pressure on his shoulders for him to deliver. if he doesn't then x-factor/simon by its nature have set up a huge very public downfall like we saw with leon.

he is young and clueless he will do whatever simon says. but if his is wise and gets offers for musical theatre then he should go for it. that seems to be his place not as a bland pop act cause he doesn't really inspire much enthusiasm as a pop act.

it is funny as i was chatting about this with a member on here. for me the joes, cheryls ect want to be famous and singing is a way to get that. i don't truely believe they love the music they are putting out, it is just a cause to an end to sell records thus be famous. it makes me sad that the music industry is swamped with people who would sing the phone book if it meant they had a hit. for me to i love artists who are artists and would be making music even if it wasn't for commercial release, the love of music and creating it comes 1st, fame is something that comes along with it not something courted.

The physical has been flying out today. This battle gets more interesting :D

I really hate how the X Factor has the Christmas number one in the bag by default nowadays, and how it has deterred any other major artists from even attempting to bring out a single in Christmas week to compete. However, I think Rage Against The Machine getting number one would be just as bad, as it's based on nothing but hype, which would not exist if it were not for the X Factor. If you were to compile a chart by asking everybody "what is your favourite song this week?" I doubt either of those two songs would appear anywhere near the top.

That said, the main thing that I have missed about the Christmas chart is not the quality of the music, it is the suspense and the competition, and the sense of occasion; and my goodness, we have that this year! It might be incredibly different from way back when, and I can't say I'm fussed about who actually wins this battle, but this year as far as I'm concerned, the Christmas chart is back! :D

last year alexandra sold 286.425 CDS and the remainder on dloads to get to no1 - i would say if joe sells this much he will probably beat rage!!

I think Joe will get no.1 eventually, just not the Christmas no.1. How many people are gonna download RATM next week?

To me, Gaga is Christmas no.1 this year, its the only song there selling purely on merit.

May I ask where the Muppets are in the mids.
