An all-star cast of Robbie Williams, Russell Brand, Trevor Horn, Ian Broudie, John Motson, David Baddiel, Frank Skinner and soprano Olivia Safe have teamed up as The Squad to record a new version of football song 3 Lions.

3 Lions 2010 is released by Parlophone on Monday (May 16) in anticipation of the World Cup next month. The group is backed by a full orchestra, a choir and fans from The Official England Supporters Club.

As well as a single release, the track will be included on a new football album from EMI TV, England The Album 2010, released on May 24.

Robbie Williams says, “I've always been approached to write football songs but have always declined as I thought 3 Lions could never be beaten - so I am really happy to be part of this record. I am counting down the days until the start of the World Cup."

I prefer the original to be honest if this goes to #1 it be the 3rd time, just a waste of re-recording it. Twice is enough but 3 times takes the biscuit. Why can't they do something original, in 4 years time there be another version of it.

Cheer up, it could be worse, it's not as if comedian/writer Keith Allen is redoing England's 1990 World Cup song World In Motion with his daughter (Lily) and James Corden, with Rio Ferdinand on the famous John Barnes rap .........

I reckon this will get to No1 just before the World Cup kicks off, then possibly again, if we progress in the later stages.

When 'Three Lions' was released in 1996 I thought it was a brilliant song which deserved to become an anthem for England football fans. Sadly they then recorded 'Three Lions 1998' which tainted the song a little for me. Then in 2002 (I think it was) I heard a cover of 'Three Lions' by Dutch dance group Hermes House Band and the meaning of the song had been completely lost somewhere along the lines. There's probably loads of other countries who all have their own "it's coming home, footballs coming home" chant.

A bit like football itself, England created the game but other countries took it to the next level. Having just heard the song, I stopped it about halfway through.

"cos IIIIIIII Reeeeeeemeeeeeeemmmmmbbeerrrrrrrrrr". Just...no!!! -_-

World in Motion > Three Lions

I'd actually agree but had New Order insisted on rewriting the song several times over the years I'm sure you would eventually be sick and tired of 'World In Motion'. 'Three Lions' should've stayed in 1996 - people would remember the song more fondly.

Will be interesting to see how this performs seeing as people have a choice between this and the original!

This versions alright, although I obviously preferred the original, but it's not bad and it's a song to not be taken too seriously, but still have a serious element to it. (Make sense? haha)

Dreading that James Corden thing :puke:

Ah well at least they won't be worse than Chico's lackluster effort! haha

No. Just no. No. I mean, I'm Welsh anyway, but I've always appreciated Three Lions even the 98 version cos that was what was around when I started listening to the chart. This would chart anyway with just the original download. But why do we have to have this? Its bound to be God-awful.
It's not as bad as I thought it was going to be to be fair....

Joxer Goes to Stuttgart is the best World Cup song ever, although 3 Lions does come a close second.

It's a pity they didn't release this as Baddiel/Skinner & The Lightning Seeds. I'd have liked the Seeds to have their first top 40 hit in over 10 years. They've released some great stuff beyond 3 Lions/Pure/Life of Riley.

52. 3 Lions 2010 - The Squad

I wonder where this can get to?

I think it'll get top 20 this week and possibly higher next week

I can see it going to no.1 if we get to the semi final stages of the world cup...not that, thats ever likely to happen..

Bleh. I hate football songs

This was awful the first two times. I don't see how it'll be any better on my ears now.

The beginning of this new version is awful & the rest is not right but it's okay. ^_^

I'm not expecting a number 1 this time because the England football team squad just scares me a bit!
