The reason why the surfin bird campaign has failed is because unfortunately, there has been more press for the "cage against the machine" silence campaign.

The reason why rage against the machine won is that they got all the publicity by making a video of some that years x factor contestants singing killing in the name

Matt is 205k ahead of Surfin Bird

And of course, the great people on Bird's facebook page think it's bull$h!t

That is one of the reasons but not the main reason.

The main reasons are simply that:

a) KITN was a better song with an anti-establishment message, and it got a lot of support from rock/metal fans

b ) Last years campaign was original

c) It was clear from very early in TXF that Matt was going to win - online discussion and opinion polls all indicated that he had a massive lead - whilst Joe never had such a large fanbase

d) Biffy Clyro > Miley Cyrus

Not that I'm upset about it or anything like that (I did support the RATM campaign to begin with) but the manner in which they won and then gloated about it afterwards and that it was a fair fight was ridiculous. As someone said on here last year, it was as clear-cut as a Zimbabwe election.

I never really got this impression, i just saw the couple who started the campaign on the news and they seemed well down to earth.maybe some of the fans on message boards or even rage themselves gave you that impression!!#

was brillant last year - great memories!!

Woahhh, Matt's sales are fantastic! Hopefully he can get 400,000 - 500,000 by the end of the week.

if sales between matt and another contender were closer he would sell even more, maybe 700k by sunday.

those sales of cds vs dloads are good info - wednesday was the killer for joe last year then!!

people behind the campaign were fine because they were the publicity side of it, the Facebook was full of people who were annoying though. Kept pestering radio stations to play the song and then calling them every name under the sun when they didn't

it was a good campaign though, did buy a copy myself despite already owning the first RATM album, wouldn't go overboard like the multibuyers though

I tried but 'I shouldn't believe everything I read in the newspaper'

I actually give up trying to reason with them now as they'll happily believe this no problem:

For those who didnt catch it, Biker fm laid down some figures and it shows us at the 98k mark, only 68k behind matt with figures of 166k, this means after the sales records of sunday he has only sold 54k in 3 days and we have sold 63k in them same 3 days, we need a big push but we ARE out selling him! come on guys!

but not this

I am actually quite speechless. There are simply no words for that level of stupidity. If they even slightly took off the rose tinted bird specs surely they can work out Matt selling ONLY 53K in 3 days is simply not possible!!!

Not going to attempt to post any more but boy am I going to look forward to their reactions when the sales are announced on Sunday and not only has Matt trounced them but the sales have struggled to even get to that 98k mark they are 'supposedly on now'

not a good performance from Michael, thought he'd sell more....

I'm sure his sales will be fine, but he was never going to top Take That and Rihanna has get a huge boost from her performance(s) on X Factor.

Rihanna is seriously EVERYWHERE though :o #2 single, another top 10 single, another top 15 single, another nearly-top 20 single, another top 40 single and the #2 album :o Plus S&M lower down the singles chart and Rated R has probably also climbed back into the top 100 with the XF boost

Edited by ★ Xmas Bray ★

^Yeah, I think S&M might re-enter the top 100 this week! :o Cannot fathom how, it's so early for the song to be selling like that!

Changing the subject slightly. The xmas no1 is a coveted spot due to the high number of sales, this is supposedly based on people buying singles as presents for relatives & vice versa.

Have you ever been given the chrstmas no1 single as a present & did you like it?

I've never been given ANY single (or album) as a present. :(

However, I haven't liked a Christmas #1 in years now. This years isn't very good, 2009's was absolutely dreadful, 2008's was nice-ish to be fair, but I'd never pay to listen to it, etc.

After the successful Facebook-driven campaign to get Rage Against The Machine's sweary classic 'Killing In The Name' to the top of the charts last Christmas, it was inevitable that countless others would attempt to follow that lead. Heading the charge is the annoying kitschification of Trashmen's wonderful 'Surfin' Bird', but there's also the more considered statement of this mass-collaboration on John Cage's conceptual masterpiece '4'33"'. Appearing on this take are a rag-tag bunch including Orbital, Madness, Anne Pigalle, The Kooks, Billy Bragg, Jon McLure and Imogen Heap, though Pete Doherty is (in)conspicuous by his absence.

The beauty of '4'33"' is that it isn't the sound of silence. The three-movement piece is different in every performance, as it captures the ambient noise of our surroundings. Appropriated here as a statement against the commercial transformation of music from a vital soundtrack of life to nothing more than empty muzak, it's a much more fitting protest than Rage's track. Of course, last year's campaign was a complete success in many ways. It put some fun back into the Christmas No.1 chase, it forced Simon Cowell to actually try with this year's winner's single(s) and it got some swearing on the radio. Furthermore, with The X Factor's scheduling changing, this might be the last time such a protest is needed. What it won't be though is the last net-based campaign to thrust unlikely songs into the charts, and there's a definite risk that by the time the mince pies are done, this form of protest will have become as frustratingly ubiquitous as the talent show it seeks to usurp.

But the bold bit is why I think these campaigns aren't working, in effect we're being told what to buy again - not only by Simon Cowell - but now people we don't even know

I'm gonna post the Friday updates as well and then gloat like mad when Matt is announced no.1

Thursday Update – Top 40 Only

Singles

1 Matt Cardle 245k

Matt Cardle not doing as well as most previous winners (especially Shayne Ward 'That's My Goal'). 'When We Collide' might tail off and struggle to even make 400k. Can't see sales of the track sustaining next week so I think Eminem or Bruno Mars will definitely have the biggest selling single of 2010.

His ahead of Joe, at the same stage as Rage last year but behind Alex - so he's probably looking at roughly 500K - depending on how the weather disrupts shoppers

Matt won't just have one week after this week to overtake Bruno/Eminem, he'll have a further 2 after this week - the week leading up to boxing day, and the following week.

I can't see him being Year End number one, even if he is Eminem will be higher in the end of Decade chart ... that's a long way to come.

If he sells 450k this week, 200k next week and 100k the week after, that will equel 750k. Eminem's sold over 800k.

Boy, if the RATM supporters last year gloated half as much as you do, Buzzjack would have witnessed mass suicides!

Nothing like a sore winner, friend ;) Something tells me there'll be another aggressive rock/metal track going for this next year - Surfin' Bird was always a silly idea.

I'd imagine it'd be more like 500 - 300 - 150, putting him on 950k, so Eminem & RiRi would have to sell 13k per week to hold off Matt which I don't think will happen. I think Matt has Y/E #1 in the bag really.

I suppose if the predicted 'snow shuts down the country' does happen that'll hugely affect Matt's physical sales though.
