A green-eyed beauty with a sultry voice, Rihanna was discovered as a teenager on her island home of Barbados, and quickly signed with the venerable Def Jam records. Powered by a Soft Cell sample, her infectious dancehall/Caribbean single "Pon de Replay," from her album the MUSIC OF THE SUN, became the summer jam of 2005, peaking at number two on the charts. By 2006 she had become a worldwide sensation, and her second album, A GIRL LIKE ME, went platinum, boosted by a Nike ad song, guest appearances on ALL MY CHILDREN, and a film part in BRING IT ON: ALL OR NOTHING. Further success followed with 2007's double platinum GOOD GIRL GONE BAD, which spawned the all conquering "Umbrella" - topping the UK singles chart for ten weeks in the summer of that year. - HMV

'Loud' and 'Rated R' also suffer from the Katy Perry effect - painfully average or downright awful first single (OG and RR respectively) and then far better subsequent singles.

WMN? is probably in my top 5 songs of the year while OG(ITW) has still failed to surpass 'painfully average' in my opinion stakes and is unlikely to ever do so.

Given that California Gurls was KP's first tolerable single by her for me, I would disagree.

Ooh I don't agree I think OG is amazing while California Girls is just a bit meh I don't really like it.

ugh... they are going to play Matt twice in a spate of 30 mins
Wow, Fireflies was so random. :o How such a huge hit came from such an unknown band, and how the bands later singles didn't even make the top 100. One hit wonder but God, an amazing song! :D

Glad 'Only Girl' is so high up, amazing song. Although I do by far prefer 'What's My Name'.

Strange to see Owl City so high up, I have hardly heard it anywhere since it was initially a success!

Matt must've sold atleast 230K last week then - higher than Joe's second week sales.
Oh and I'll be so pissed if Matt has beaten Em & Ri to #01. They deserve it fully.
Such a mediocre song, I've never understood it's success. I can't understand how this can be a 600k+ selling #1 and the 4th biggest seller of the year, it sounds like album filler.
