March 21, 201114 yr Britney Spears! Went crazy - shaved her hair off. Returned and smashed the charts with Gimme More.
March 21, 201114 yr Lol Kylie is good but you can't compare her success to Take That. Take That have broken pretty much every record since they reformed, no group has come close to them since The Beatles. I agree. you cant compare. Kylie is far bigger worldwide. The fact you are comparing their achievments to the The Beatles kinda scares me lol
March 21, 201114 yr Author It doesn't really count given the short gap but '5 Years Time' was a fairly substantial hit for Noah & The Whale in summer '08, the singles from that album which followed missed the top 75, as did everything from their next album. Then from nowhere they're now back in the top 20 heading for 3 months in the top 40 with 'Life Goes On'! I'd agree with that one. If only because of the fact that indie is now completely dead in the charts (at least compared to 2008) that it makes its success all the more surprising :o
March 21, 201114 yr Wouldn't really call Dr. Dre's comeback a chart comeback plainly because he hasn't released anything under his own name since early 2001 until now. Take That was sort of same but they became back bigger as they ever were so that should be counted here. Morrissey is definitely one. He too had a five years break before You Are the Quarry (2004) though but that was the first time he managed to get four Top 10 singles from one album. The gap between Top 10 singles was ten years from 'The More You Ignore Me the Closer I Get' to 'Irish Blood English Heart'. Primal Scream, from 'Kowalski' to 'Country Girl' - nine years. Wet Wet Wet, from 'Yesterday' to infamous 'Weightless' - 11 years Meat Loaf, from 'Not a Dried Tear in the House' to 'It's All Coming Back to Me Now' - over ten years Erasure, from 'Run to the Sun' to 'Solsbury Hill' - eight and half years Not necessarily 'a comeback' but Snoop Dogg had his first Top 10 single as lead artist with Drop Like It's Hot (2004), eight years after 'Snoop's Upside Your Head' reached no. 12. Weezer did the same: 'Buddy Holly' reached no. 12 and their first Top 10 single came ten years later with 'Beverly Hills' If you include the acts with long absence from the business overall you have The Beatles, Elvis Presley, George Harrison, Rage Against the Machine, charity things like Band Aid etc. Edited March 21, 201114 yr by SKOB
March 21, 201114 yr Biffy Clyro another example, basically from 2007 onwards, before that, they weren't *that* well known, then in 2007, they scored three straight top 20 hits and then on their following album six songs from one album all top 40- certainly a turnaround!
March 21, 201114 yr Michael Jackson? 'Hold My Hand' was his first new top 10 hit since 2003's 'One More Chance' (obviously Man In The Mirror in 2009 was never previously a top 10 hit but I'm not counting that)
March 21, 201114 yr Between top10 hits: Robyn 1998---->2007 All Saints 2001---->2006 Backstreet Boys 2001---->2005 Jessica Simpson 2000---->2004 Scooch 2000---->2007
March 21, 201114 yr Surely Cher with the monster hit believe It definitely seemed like a huge comeback because it was such an enormous hit, but she had a top10 in 1996, only 2 years before Believe
March 21, 201114 yr Author Forgot about Scooch  The fact that they got a top 5 hit seven years after the first was ridiculous, especially as our ESC entries usually flop in the charts. Flying The Flag (as much as I shamefully loved it) sounded SO out of place in 2007! Got to be up there with the most random top five comebacks, it's not like More Than I Needed To Know was ever that well known anyway (despite its top 5 peak). And of COURSE Robyn, she's another great one, from 90's bubblegum pop teenager to critically acclaimed electro pop-ster, loved that she made it bigger here than she did the first time around!
March 21, 201114 yr a few more: Bob Sinclar 2000---->2006 Chicane 2000---->2006 Basement Jaxx 2001---->2005
March 21, 201114 yr John Otway For a 50th birthday present back in 2002 he wanted a Top10 Hit so there was a poll Song called 'Bunson Burner' reached No9 Remember him? Don't know full details Last song in the Top40 was 'Really Free' peaked at No27 in December 1977.
March 21, 201114 yr Between top10 hits: Mariah Carey 2000---->2005 Robyn 1998---->2007 All Saints 2001---->2006 Backstreet Boys 2001---->2005 Jessica Simpson 2000---->2005 Scooch 2000---->2007  Mariah made top 10 in late 2002 and featured on a Busta Rhymes top 3 hit in 2003. Jessica Simpson had a top 10 in 2004.
March 21, 201114 yr Mariah made top 10 in late 2002 and featured on a Busta Rhymes top 3 hit in 2003. Jessica Simpson had a top 10 in 2004. You're right. I'm excluding "featurings" though
March 21, 201114 yr Author Through The Rain was one of her more forgettable singles, definitely. I remember being fairly surprised when it did go top ten...I was never a huge fan of it, the vocal acrobatics on the chrous seemed very processed, and I think it would have sounded a LOT better had she not sung the chorus in such a high register.
March 21, 201114 yr I forgot about Morrissey... 1997's "Maladjusted" was pretty poorly received, taking a whopping seven year gap and the coming back with four straight top 10s off the same album is really something. The gap between albums for Green Day isn't a huge amount (four years between "Warning" and "American Idiot", there was actually longer between the latter and "21st Century Breakdown") but when you take into account they'd been in commercial decline since 1995, it's mighty impressive to come back with an album that sells DOUBLE what any of your previous efforts have managed (possibly even more than all its predecessors combined) and spin five top 20 singles off it. With this trend of early 2000s artists coming back and doing well, I kind of hope Limp Bizkit can carry that on
March 21, 201114 yr some acts from the (distant) past: Slade - massive between 1971 and 1975, faded in 1976, had a minor hit in 1977 before releasing a string of singles that flopped. Then played Reading Festival in 1980, had a minor hit in 1980 before returning to the top 10 in 1981 Alvin Stardust - charted in 1961 and 1962 under the name Shane Fenton before disappearing, seemingly forever and then reappearing in 1973 as Alvin Stardust with a number of top 10 singles. Shadows - massive in the 60s, last hit in 1968 before Eurovision took then back into the top 20 in 1975 Brotherhood Of Man - another group who owed their return to the charts to Eurovision. Had two hits in 1970 before disappearing. Returned in 1976 with a completely new line up to sing the UK's Eurovision entry (and the Eurovision winner), Save Your Kisses For Me. Then pretended they were Abba whilst having 3 years of big hits between 1976 and 1978 before vanishing again and then returning to the charts with Lightning Flash (which is basically Super Trouper part 2) in 1982 Johnny Cash - Had a few top 50 (as the chart was then) hits from 1965 to 1976, before he had a number of years releasing singles to little interest then returning in 2003 with his remakes of Hurt and Personal Jesus as well as a massive selling album.
March 21, 201114 yr A few artists who were absent from the chart for over 35 years: Perez Prado - top 10 hits in 1955 and 1958, remained absent until 1994's Guaglione (which peaked at #2 in 1995) Ernie K-Doe - charted in 1961 with Mother In Law, remained absent until 2007, when Here Come The Girls (the song which Sugababes covered the following year) made #43 Tony Blackburn - 2 minor hits in the late 1960s, teamed up with The Wurzels in 2007. Both of the first two had however been dead for approximately 6 years when they made their 'comebacks'. Another notable comeback was that of The Dubliners - they reached the top 10 in 1987 teaming up with The Pogues, having not charted since 1967.
