I tend to download illegally when it comes to singles because with the amount I download the money would soon build up and I don't really get pocket money. Also, record companies - I am not waiting four weeks or more from first hearing and liking a song to being able to put it on my Mp3 Player :) I make legal purchases on occassion though as the quality tends to be better.

As for albums, I'll always buy them legally/physically if it's an album I've listened to online and know I like it.

Same as Jahq really, I physically couldn't download all the tracks I want from iTunes (then there's the wait) so I just get the ones I really like. As for albums, I always test online first, and buy if I like. I know it's technically illegal but at the end of the day I won't pay for something I dislike.
Is this a thread to find out how many 'criminals' there are on Buzz Jack? :P

The thought crossed my mind :D

I generally only do it if I can't get it on CD or iTunes, such as the b-sides on Kate Nash's vinyls from Made Of Bricks. I have no vinyl player, and the songs weren't on iTunes, so I downloaded them from somewhere...

I do download new songs I like from YouTube, but I always make sure I buy them when they're out, e.g. The Saturdays - All Fired Up.

Odd that only 5/73 chose the 'I decline to answer' option, then. :P

I will download illegally most of the time. I tend to buy albums legally, but even then, if it's cheaper to get the physical CD, I will do that. Most of the time, downloading a song allows me to get to know it, and if I love it, that tends to be a major factor in me buying the album; before a year ago, I'd never done anything with regards putting music on a player and listening to it. That be my defense. Also, I'd want to get so many on my collection, I'd bankrupt myself in a month if I did it all legally.

I'd imagine 90% of the overall downloads are illegal. I think it'll mainly be older people who aren't as tech-savvy who legally download, because they simply won't know how to illegally download (not that it's very difficult).

A lot of people simply can't afford to buy all the music that they want to listen to, especially young children, so I think they'll obviously illegally download.

The answer to the question 'what portion of all downloads do you think are illegal' is bizarre.

OBVIOUSLY it is more than 90%. Look around you (at young people who actually know how to download songs from here and there). Everybody has all the big hits even the weekly hits. How many of them download them legally? Nobody, they are too expensive to have. People here may actually 'respect' and want to 'support' music more than the average person. Do not nessesarily judge by youself only.

I know A LOT of people that have no credit card account, yet have a vast selection of songs. Even kids that are not old enough to have an account they can pay for have every song ;)

About mysef, I do download A LOT of songs illegally and then choose a few I like to download legaly. I am an 'album buyer'; I buy my favourite 3-5 albums every year and that's enough for my budget.

But illegal downloading shouldn't be approached only as a negative thing imo. I have been involved in it (in the branch of video games) and it SERVES its purpose as long as it is under control.

I don't download stuff legally mainly for the reason that I prefer to have a physical CD for my money, ie. something I can actually hold

Bo**ocks! There is no logic to that at all..... You're basically saying you download illegally if you can't get a physical product?? If you can't get a physical copy of the CD why steal a download instead of paying for it??

Sorry but all these illegal downloading "excuses" are just bull****! You don't walk out of Tescos without paying because "you can't afford everything you want". Legal prices are too high?? That's because thieving bast*rds downloading illegally are costing the record companies money and they have to put their prices higher to compensate.....

This. When I was a kid, I got £2.50 a week (it was actually my bus money, but my parents would refuse to give me any money for me to use for leisure, so I used to walk home from school to save my bus money for other things :(). That's two or three songs a week. But most people also have interest in things other than music. I'd have to save up money over two weeks, when I wanted to go and watch a movie with my friends, for example. It was extremely rare there'd not be something I wasn't having up my 50p coins for. And people expect these kids to buy albums aswell!! Good grief!

99p is just too expensive for normal people, particularly kids, who are the people that are most interested in music tbh. I have a job now, so I can afford to buy all the music I want to now. But I remember only this time last year, I literally couldn't buy anything.

What used to happen a lot with albums when I was younger was that a group of people who wanted the same album would split the cost of it between them, and we'd share it around. But even then, that was just one sale, yet in reality quite a large amount of people would "own" the album.

No you are terribly wrong here. You must see it exactly the other way. They are more expensive than they should be in many cases AND they would be even more expensive if it hadn't been for the pressure of illegal downloads. It is a different form of competition that if forcing them to make their prices more accessible and improve their services/ products.

It is a case where an overdose of the medicine could actually kill the patient but this ballance I am talking about is a real one.

If I can't get a song legally (I.e a certian someones song about tall buildings and how they rise from the ground) then I will use other means to get it. However I am likely to be buying their album because of that song, which I wouldn't have if I didn't have it.

Calm down. First off, I (like most others who do the same thing) don't want to pay for something that I can't have in my hands. I like to have a physical album to see the booklet

etc. SO I will download it illegally if it's not physically available. Luckily, that's very rare and almost all the music I haven't paid for on my iTunes at the moment is either albums that I have yet to buy (I go on spending sprees every few months) or tracks that leaked or are unavailable to purchase in my country.

As for all the excuses being bullshit, I disagree. The "download something to see if I like it and buy it after" "thing" is perfectly fine. Downloading because you can't afford it is less sound but at the same time if you buy the album when you have the funds later in life then there's no problem. I know I used to download quite a lot of albums that I couldn't afford and over the past year or so I've gradually been buying them. So it's fine. BUT, if you have money then there's really no excuse to be killing the music industry, to be fair.

If you want a physical version stick it onto a blank CD!
How is 'bullshit' to listen to an album before you buy? It's not an excuse either, it may be technically illegal but tbh it's not extremely morally wrong, fair enough if you're subconcious to wasting money in case you hate it. Most of the time I like the album and will buy it so it's fine, maybe not straight away cos I'm not made of money but when I can I do.
OK maybe I worded it badly - if you're going to later download something legally and delete the illegal version you have a point of sorts. But it's not even necessary to download the illegal version in the first place - you can easily sample albums in full LEGALLY and FOR FREE on sites like spotify.

Well yes, you could do that! But it wouldn't be the same. I want a proper album with a booklet and a proper case etc. I don't know why but I do. That will come across to you as me just looking for any excuse to download but it's really not. Like I said, it's rarely necessary anyway and I'm always nagging my friends about not paying for music.

I have to admit that once I discovered illegal downloading, there was no way back. It's just so much easier and it allows me to discover more new music as I'd be restricted to only buying my absolute favourite songs and albums if I hadn't known about illegal downloading.

Lock me up and throw away the key! :drama:

That's hardly an excuse for illegal downloading though! You're not getting a booklet or proper case with that either...... in fact you're getting the same as you would with the legal download - the only difference is that in one case you're stealing the music and in the other you're paying.
