Thanks to X Factor, this year more than ever we seem to be seeing a lot of 'classic' songs reach the top 10 that previously did not quite fulfill their potential eg. Cannonball this week and (looking likely) Iris for next weeks chart. I was wondering what songs you all thought were classics and deserved that top 10 placing?

For me personally, I'd like to see something from KT Tunstall go top 10. I think if I had to pick one it would be Other Side Of The World.

Pink - Nobody Knows!!

It was heavily used this weekend but i dont see it anywhere! Brilliant song and deserves a top 15 placing at least!

I don't necessarily LOVE some of these songs but looking at the example of Cannoball and Iris any of these I could imagine going top ten on iTunes with major X Factor exposure;

> Lonestar - Amazed

> Semisonic - Secret Smile

> Lady Antebellum - Need You Now

> Birdy - Skinny Love

> Alicia Keys - If I Ain't Got You

> Red Hot Chilli Peppers - Under The Bridge

I'd say Sarah McLachlan's Angel too but that gets exposed every year and never goes anywhere, the perennial under achiever that she is in the UK charts :(

^ Well, Diana Vickers kind of performed Under the Bridge last year. :kink:

Seriously though, I agree that those songs on that list could see huge boosts with X Factor promo.

I hope 'Drops of Jupiter' (although it JUST peaked top 10!) could re-peak soon too! #10 is CRIMINAL for a song so good! :(

I'm loving all these answers. I thought I'd get a hundred posts of 'Untouchable by Girls Aloud!' or something equally as naff.
All of these 'finally makes it big thanks to X Factor' songs are actually quite similar. They're pretty much all ballads, MOR or mid-tempo songs, perfect for daytime radio and are mostly very much cases where you recognise the song but perhaps didn't know the artist or just never thought to research into it so never bought it. Seeing it right in front of your face on the iTunes front page, it gathers momentum as people tend to look at what's right in front of them for the same reason as the iTunes 'top ten effect' exists.

I'm suprised it never went top 40 again after One Direction performed it on a live show last year.

Untouchable by Girls Aloud :kink:

This tbh

And Martin Solveig - Hello. You never know, it could be a group performance :kink:

One Republic - Mercy, All The Right Moves, Good Life

Birdy - Skinny Love

The Fray - You Found Me, Never Say Never

Pussycat Dolls - I Hate This Part

Nick Lachey - What's Left Of Me

Snow Patrol - Just Say Yes, Open Your Eyes, Crack The Shutters, Set Fire To The Third Bar

Lady Antebellum - Need You Now

Leona Lewis - I See You

Jack Johnson - Better Together

> Alicia Keys - If I Ain't Got You

WOW! I'm shocked this didn't reach the Top 10. My wish list would include:

Cyndi Lauper - True Colors (Original Peak: #12)

Michael Jackson - Human nature (Original peak #35 in 2009)

P!nk - Family Portrait (Original Peak: #11)

Prince - Diamonds & Pearls (Original Peak: #25)

Shakespears Sister - Hello (Turn Your Radio On) (Original Peak: #14)

I only listed ballads as they are the ones that benefit the most from X Factor performances.

If Skinny Love is performed I just hope it's sung by a male so people might download the far superior Bon Iver version instead, the same for any of Birdy's tracks to be honest.

I really hope someone sings Hurt (not by the artist originally, but in the style of Johnny Cash), 39 is just a criminal peak and clearly doesn't show it's true popularity as it's a permanent Itunes top 200 staple, in the same case as Iris, it's just waiting for any form of exposure, and tbh I don't think its impossible that someone could eventually take it on

also One Day Like This would be nice as well, and can definitely see it doing well considering a use of the song for about twenty seconds gets it in the mid 60s

I definitely agree with the shouts for One Day Like This, Set The Fire To The Third Bar, Secret Smile and Drops of Jupiter.

In the same vein of reasonably(ish) well known but not particularly big X-Factor type songs, any of the following would be good too:

'Heartbeats' (Jose Gonzalez version)

Idlewild 'American English'

Bright Eyes 'First Day Of My Life'

Editors 'Smokers Outside The Hospital Doors'

Although realistically I'd suspect only Jose and maybe Editors would be well known enough.

Hurt definitely deserves to be a big hit but does Fix Factor have contestants who could do it in Johnny Cash stylee? It needs a fairly mature voice to do that, not some 19-year-old.

Obviously One Day Like This should also have been a massive hit rather than a few scattered weeks between 31 and 40. However, I'm not sure I can stand the idea of some Fix Factor contestant trying to perform it. After all, you can't improve on perfection. Mind you, that's what I thought before Elbow performed the song with the BBC Concert Orchestra and a choir. Of course that just sets the bar even higher for anyone who dares to take up the challenge.

There's obviously no way anyone would be able to better the original version, but songs performed on X-Factor often aren't, but people still buy the version they're familiar with because it reminds them of it, and how good it is. A performance doesn't have to be good for people to download it in the form they're familiar with. Infact a poor version is probably an advantage as people remember how much better the original was.

yes, it shouldn't be sung by a kid that's for sure, but I think there are some voices who would suit it well, there was a contestant last year (Aidan) who I thought could've done well with it

I'm quite surprised someone hasn't sung ODLT yet tbh, it would even suit well as a 'credible' winners song choice  I agree that it probably would be inferior or even cringeworthy, but I guess any sort of exposure would do the song good
