October 19, 201113 yr I would agree with that. Last year it was John Cage's 4'33" in the 'Cage against the machine' campaign. *Very* clever name but it didn't exactly get it very far. Never mind Smells Like Teen Spirit, why not just have a campaign to download the most obvious Christmas record of all, namely Slade? Because Slade have already been #1 and had all the chart recognition they could possibly want - if you're going down that line then "Fairytale of New York" or even better "I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday" would be better. Those two are pretty much my definitive Christmas songs anyway, along with Band Aid.
October 19, 201113 yr Well the winner's song this year is written by Gary Barlow, so it's likely to fit at least the 'dreary' part of that. Let's hope it's nothing like Matt's new song (dull)
October 19, 201113 yr Everyone keeps mentioning Christmas Singles that have been Hits over & over again. But, as I said in an earlier Post, this is a Christmas Song that has never been a Hit before. It is also an 'Instant Classic' - right from the string intro, to the 'Noel! Noel!' at the very end. To the Video - a Victorian Christmas - complete with snow. To the lead Singer's excellent voice. To the Choir. To the Chorus, & the Music..... It is the best Christmas Song that I've heard since 1987, ('Fairytale Of New York'), as far as I'm concerned. Having Rock Hits at No.1 at Christmas is just people trying to be clever - by thinking that you have to have the exact opposite of an 'X Factor' Ballad at No.1, for Christmas. As for the 'X Factor' Ballads, most of them are along the same lines/themes, 'They said I wouldn't make it, but look at me now!', 'I'm at the top of the World!'. 'Everyone look at me now!. 'I've made it!'. 'My dreams have all come true!'. 'This is my time - my moment!'. 'This was my journey, & now I've climbed to the top!' (Pass me the sick bag!). :puke2: MY FAVOURITE TIME OF YEAR - THE FLORIN STREET BAND (AN INSTANT CHRISTMAS CLASSIC) Edited October 19, 201113 yr by zeus555
October 19, 201113 yr Mistletoe & Wine Rockin Around The Xmas Tree Merry Xmas Everyone Merry Xmas Everybody I Wish it Could Be Christmas Everyday Fairy Tale of New York All I Want For Xmas Walking In The Air ... these should try for #1 this year IMO :P
October 19, 201113 yr Smells Like Teen Spirit and Killing in the Name have both become hideous cliches, so it makes sense for the former to be the 'official' anti-X Factor record this year. But you'll get no support for me. I didn't support KITM in '09 because I had already had a copy for 17 years and was a bit sick of it...I'm even more sick of SLTS. The only merit is that they are quite rightly backing Rhythmix who have taken a real knock from the X Factor machine. So, I'd rather bung a fiver their way and not have to make some kind of 'statement' over it. I'd support an appeal to ask Syco not to release the X Factor single in the Christmas week and postpone it until the week after - it'll sell a bucketload to the same idiots anyway. Then people might start to record decent Christmas songs again. Edited October 19, 201113 yr by richie

Those two are pretty much my definitive Christmas songs anyway, along with Band Aid. The two tracks you mention have also had all the recognition they could want, they were big hits in their day and re-appear every Christmas, so I can't see any big difference between those and Slade. Of course I'd prefer there to be genuine competion for the Christmas no.1 without the need for specific campaigns. But no 'normal' track is ever going to approach the sales of a first week X-Factor winner's single.

Of course I'd prefer there to be genuine competion for the Christmas no.1 without the need for specific campaigns. But no 'normal' track is ever going to approach the sales of a first week X-Factor winner's single. The difference is 'Merry Xmas Everybody' is already a UK #1 while 'Fairytale Of New York' only got to #2 and 'I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday' only #4.
October 19, 201113 yr Apparently Joe Mcelderry is releasing Last Christmas on 19th .... How ironic would that be if the campaign got behind him for the xmas no1 after all RATM always said their campaign had nothing against Joe and now Simon has dropped him... sort of a double whammy!!! Now that would be very funny  SLTS is currently 6-1 with the bookies behind three X Factor contestants.
October 19, 201113 yr Author Now that would be very funny  SLTS is currently 6-1 with the bookies behind three X Factor contestants. 6-1 seems like incredibly good odds, I suppose they're scared they'll lose loads of money like they did with RATM if they put them higher? I'm rapidly starting to think more and more that this could actually work again this year. My dad says they were talking about it on Heart FM today. And it's now at nearly 32k 'likes' on Facebook.
October 19, 201113 yr The difference is 'Merry Xmas Everybody' is already a UK #1 while 'Fairytale Of New York' only got to #2 and 'I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday' only #4. Well I appreciate that, but my point was all three have already been big hits. I guess It all depends if the fact the track hasn't already been at no.1 is an important part of your campaign to oust the X-Factor winner. I suspect that will probably be lost on most potential buyers who want to protest at the X-Factor so you might as well choose what is probably the best known Christmas single ever, well apart from 'White Christmas'. Bing Crosby for no.1? Hmmmm... Now *there's* a thought.....
October 19, 201113 yr I don't mind the song but honestly, this is the third year running and I think they should just GIVE IT UP. Oh boo hoo, The X Factor winner has the Christmas #1 again - is it really that big a deal to the haters? I don't really get why they care so much. We can't exactly like every #1. Doubt it'll work either, it worked once and I don't see the success ever being repeated again. Wouldn't mind as much with an actual Christmas song or just any normal song that's released the same week just like every other release week. Glee are doing another Christmas album this year with songs such as 'Do They Know It's Christmas?' & 'All I Want For Christmas Is You' - let's have one of them at #1 :kink: Edited October 19, 201113 yr by Jáhq
October 19, 201113 yr I just don't want any campaign, if the X-Factor winner is the song most people are buying, it should be number 1. Simple.
October 19, 201113 yr Author I just don't want any campaign, if the X-Factor winner is the song most people are buying, it should be number 1. Simple. But what if it's NOT the song most people are buying? :P
October 19, 201113 yr Definately not. The only campaign I would support would be for "Trash" by Suede for Christmas Number 1, which would be fantastic because: 1. It's Suede. 2. The lyrics could be interpreted as an attack on the manufactured nature of the XFactor. 3. The 'hilarity' that would ensue whenever a reporter/Reggie 'ironically' mixes Suede up with perrenial Christmas stalwarts Slade. 4. It's Suede. I'm too lethargic to start the campaign myself though, so if some bright spark were to do so, I wouldst not object.
October 19, 201113 yr I fully supported the Rage Against The Machine campaign (which created one of the most brilliant and exciting Christmas chart battles of the past 10 years), I don't know if there is much point in another campaign given the point has already been made. John Cage's "4'33'' (Cage Against The Machine Version)" last year was an awful idea, not funny at all, and a complete waste of money for anyone who did buy that. "Smells Like Teen Spirit" is an absolute classic song and deserves better than its #7 peak back in 1991 but I don't really feel like I can be bothered to repurchase the song this Christmas to be honest. The whole Rhythmix thing is a disgrace though - The X Factor stole the name of children’s charity Rhythmix for their new girl group. I hope they raise a huge amount of money regardless of whether the campaign is a success or not. The X Factor can quite frankly f**k off.
October 19, 201113 yr I just don't want any campaign, if the X-Factor winner is the song most people are buying, it should be number 1. Simple. X Factor is a four-month campaign for the Christmas number one with hours of prime time television.

October 19, 201113 yr I would be happy to support a campaign to get Wham!'s Last Christmas to Number 1.I've always loved this song and never tire of hearing this over the christmas period.Only other christmas song i'd support to finally get to Number 1 is Mariah Carey's All I Want For Christmas Is You, another song i adore :)
October 19, 201113 yr Interesting to see what would have been the Christmas Number 1 since 2005 in a parallel, X-Factor-less universe: 2005: THE JCB SONG, Nizlopi 2006: PATIENCE, Take That 2007: WHAT A WONDERFUL WORLD, Eva Cassidy / Katie Melua 2008: IF I WERE A BOY, Beyonce 2009: BAD ROMANCE, Lady Gaga 2010: WHAT'S MY NAME, Rihanna / Drake
October 19, 201113 yr Wouldn't beyonce be excluded too? Given that she was on her way down the chart until her XF performance? That would leave us with Geraldine McQueen in 2008
