Posted November 18, 201113 yr Howdy, I'm not used to this place, it's rather urban and scary to me. However, I want to make a hip hop style playlist as there's a few tracks that I love and never listen to because they don't go with anything else in my collection so I need some recommendations for what to include along side them. The ones I have already are: Kanye - Runaway, Jesus Walks and All Of The Lights Some Kid Cudi Cassie - Me & U Aaliyah - Try Again Shabazz Palaces Erykah - Soldier / Window Seat Azaelia Banks - 212 Invincible - Deuce/Ypsi Trey Songz - Unfortunate Big Boi - Shutterbugg Drake - Take Care Labrinth - Earthquake Tinie Tempah - Pass Out The Weeknd Jay Z & Kanye - Otis Jay Electronica - Exhibit C Janelle - Tightrope (pushing it here?) Ideas for what to include would be welcome, esp from the indie hip hop types (CREMEY? Do we even have any others?)
November 18, 201113 yr Author Pass That Dutch (and other Missy, how could I forget her?) and Family Affair are definite keepers, the others less so but THANKS none the less.
November 18, 201113 yr Well I do quite like your selection here! Is it strictly limited to Hip Hop or can it extend to R&B? I could go a LOT further if that were the case. Here it is mainly grime / crunk and pop / R&B crossover. Gang Gang Dance - Princes (feat. Tinchy Stryder) The-Dream - F.I.L.A. (like Janelle, pushing it) Salem - Sick / Trapdoor (the rest of the album is just crunk, only these tracks could be extended to actual hip-hop) Outkast - Stankonia album, and Morris Brown Black Eyed Peas - I Can't Make You Dance, They Don't Want Music N.A.S.A. - Gifted (feat. Kanye West, Santigold, Lykke Li) Timbaland Oh Timbaland, The Way I Are Nelly Furtado - Promiscuous Twista - Overnight Celebrity Oh that does NOT flow. I've realised how little actual hip-hop I listen to.
November 18, 201113 yr Author Gang Gang Dance are wonderful so that's a certainty. I'd forgotten all about Morris Brown until just now, I always thought that was really underrated. Salem are a good shout too. I can veer into R&B if necessary, another genre I know precious little about though I'm quite fond of the Aaliyah/Cassie kinda simple sound.
November 18, 201113 yr I'm not very RnB myself, but other than seconding Missy Elliot I would suggest Kid Sister. LCQW1YJ1HL0 AbggR1ttM7w
November 18, 201113 yr Yay I got a namedrop! Anyway, some great songs already mentioned (especially 'Gifted' and 'Pass That Dutch'). Others I would suggest: Possibly some more Drake? The whole of 'Take Care' is top notch stuff. Kano 'Get Wild' (if you like Major Lazer/Diplo-esque things) Kelis 'Bossy'; 'Millionaire' Kid Sister 'Right Hand Hi' Mz Bratt 'Get Dark' Spank Rock 'Backyard Betty' Theophilus London 'I Stand Alone' 'Girls Girls $' Wiley 'If You're Going Out, I'm Going Out Too' I would say a bit of Ciara too ('1 2 Step' is my particular favourite) but I'm not sure she's really your thing. Any Frank Ocean (but it probably wouldn't fit well with the mostly upbeat songs on the playlist already!) Although you'll probably hate all of them! Haha I'm not really sure what to suggest.
November 18, 201113 yr I can't believe there are MULTIPLE Kid Sisters fans on Buzzjack. SHE'S NEVER GOING TO HAPPEN!
November 18, 201113 yr I can't believe there are MULTIPLE Kid Sisters fans on Buzzjack. SHE'S NEVER GOING TO HAPPEN! Who cares if she's 'never going to happen'. We can still like her music surely?! Ha I hadn't even seen Silas' post until after I posted...good suggestions though ofc.
November 18, 201113 yr Gang Gang Dance are wonderful so that's a certainty. I'd forgotten all about Morris Brown until just now, I always thought that was really underrated. Salem are a good shout too. I can veer into R&B if necessary, another genre I know precious little about though I'm quite fond of the Aaliyah/Cassie kinda simple sound. Princes is their only rap song, it's also Tinchy's glaring anomaly in that it's actually brilliant / one of my favourite tracks ever. Romance Layers from their newest album is GORGEOUS. I'm not quite sure how to define R&B, and I'm sure most wouldn't class it as such, but it has everything I want in a perfect R&B song - it's almost to the point of parody as it sounds like the kind of thing you'd hear in some breezy 90's American supermarket! (not that I've ever been in such a position, but I'm sure you'd know what I mean) If you know little of R&B - and I'm talking about Pitchfork-y R&B, although a lot honestly doesn't sound that different to mainstream R&B, maybe a little moodier and of course better - then I'd be willing to post a seperate playlist! :D (tomorrow) I suspect you've heard quite a lot of it, though.
November 19, 201113 yr What Kid Cudi are you listening to? He has a track called Persuit of happiness ft mgmt and ratatat from his first album which is pretty decent, his best stuff is probably from his Kid named Cudi mixtape though. As for indie hip hop, do tribe called quest and de la soul count!?? XBIajxETI5w Edited November 19, 201113 yr by ChopStick
November 19, 201113 yr 'Soundtrack 2 My Life' is my favourite Cudi track by a long shot. One of my favourite songs ever.
November 19, 201113 yr I can't believe there are MULTIPLE Kid Sisters fans on Buzzjack. SHE'S NEVER GOING TO HAPPEN! Jack's the other one I can think of, taking our numbers to three. She really is brilliant though. Who cares if she's 'never going to happen'. We can still like her music surely?! Ha I hadn't even seen Silas' post until after I posted...good suggestions though ofc. Exactly! If we only listened to artist that were going to 'happen' we wouldn't have that much of a choice. Imma just presume you've heard the Kiss Kiss Kiss mixtape. I'm seriously in love with the Laidback Luke mix of Do Do Do. When it switches between the two there is a proper moment of epicness with that almost breakdown section.
November 19, 201113 yr Trying to think what would go with the songs you listed, might be a bit off the mark: Dilated Peoples - This Way N.E.R.D - Hypnotize U Kendrick Lamar - No Make Up Jurassic 5 - Thin Line Stanton Warriors - Get Up DJ Format - Hit Song DJ Zinc - Wile Out
November 19, 201113 yr So you have Cassie 'Me & U', just wondered, have you heard ? That's my 2nd favourite from her (behind 'Is It You?' - but I'm not sure if you'd like that one?)
November 19, 201113 yr Marsha Ambrosius - I Hope She Cheats On You (With A Basketball Player) Chrisette Michele - Epiphany Asa - Fire On The Mountaintop Asa - Be My Man Cassandra Steen - Gebt Alles (best R&B/soul track I've heard all year!) All fairly similar to Erykah Badu and the like, you will probably like at least one of these!
November 19, 201113 yr Author I can confirm that the following have made it to the playlist: Dilated Peoples Frank Ocean Theophilus London Ciara Cassie - Long Way 2 Go Kano Asa Kendrick Lamar (especially promising) Mary J Missy E Jurassic 5 Gang Gang Dance Salem Kid Sista THANKS Y'ALL
November 19, 201113 yr I can confirm that the following have made it to the playlist: Kendrick Lamar (especially promising) I only discovered Kendrick Lamar recently when I was looking up acts similar to the Weeknd. Section 80 is an amazing album - definitely worth getting.
