Retro thanks to Chartstats

Coldplay for #1.

But seriously, hopefully Paradise will have decent sales this week, I'm a bit worried it will only sell like 60k even though it sold 30k in its first 2 days :( Also hoping for at least 125k (and a #3 placing) for 'Mylo Xyloto'.

Other than that, pretty dull chart. Hope The Pogues overtook Mariah.

Hello peoples :P

I was hoping for 60-70k for Paradise so I would be chuffed with that. Little Mix 350k max too?
The Pogues top 10 on the 2006 retro  I pray they can somehow go top 10 again this year but 3 weeks top 15 would be great too.
  • Author
Strange to think the Pogues went top 10 in 2006 with leftover physical CDs from 2005 :D

Expecting Little Mix's sales to be between 220-230k, seems rather low but it dropped off quite quickly on iTunes and I doubt the physical would have done as much as in previous years...

My retro faves;

2010

02. (4) Rihanna - What's My Name ft Drake  A deserved xmas #2, and I'm glad it climbed a place higher in the new year!

05. (3) Ellie Goulding - Your Song

06. (15) Take That - The Flood

07. (5) Rihanna - Only Girl (In The World)

2006

01. (1) Take That - Patience

02. (-) Cliff Richard - 21st Century Christmas/Move It  DIRE song, sold only 20k to get to #2 iirc, Some of Cliff's other xmas efforts aren't bad but this was cringeworthy 'The satellite's trackin' Santa We text our Christmas list And leave our mobile numbers To help out ole' Saint Nick' is definitely up there amongst the all time worst lyrics.

03. (8) Gwen Stefani - Wind It Up

04. (17) Cascada - Truly Madly Deeply I have a slight soft spot for this but it still isn't anywhere near the quality of Everytime We Touch and Miracle, and not even close to the Savage Garden original, at least it didn't outpeak it and only matched it...

2001

02. (1) Daniel Bedingfield - Gotta Get Thru This

03. (2) Sophie Ellis-Bextor - Murder On The Dancefloor

05. (-) Ian Van Dahl - Will I  Not quite as good as Castles In The Sky (and used a different vocalist) but I still absolutely loved this, it's always interesting to see dance songs pop up in the top ten xmas week as it's not a genre that usually excels at this time of year. Levels is this year's Will I!

07. (3) S Club 7 - Have You Ever

10. (7) Hermes House Band - Country Roads

1996

03. (4) Robert Miles - One And One ft Maria Nayler

04. (1) Boyzone - A Different Beat

06. (-) Celine Dion - All By Myself

This obviously isn't a good time of year for quality in the charts, quite crap retros overall...

I love this, but alweays confuse it in my head Will I Ever by Alice Deejay (which I also adore) and Back In My Life :/

I did wonder how they charted in 2006 - I guess that makes sense, sort of like how Band Aid went top 3 again in 1985 from leftover CDs from 1984. (They must have printed a metric f***ton of copies to still have that many left over after how much it sold in 1984!)

Crying shame that Faithless - Don't Leave was never top 10. Wasn't it out the following Crimbo?

I did wonder how they charted in 2006 - I guess that makes sense, sort of like how Band Aid went top 3 again in 1985 from leftover CDs from 1984. (They must have printed a metric f***ton of copies to still have that many left over after how much it sold in 1984!)

Actually Band Aid was reissued in 1985 with a different B-side and a slightly different sleeve. Oh, and it was on 7" and 12" single obvs, not CD

Oh, why did it share the chart run if it was a reissue?

(Good point re: CDs :P When did CDs first come around? I'm not really an expert on the history of musical formats :kink:)

Vinyl in 1984/5 Bray!

I don't know. In those days records hung around in the shops for years though, unless they were deleted, so I guess there was a mixture of sales.

CDs began in 1983 but only in Japan, they came over here a couple of years later, but CD-singles began around 1988 (and were 3" size originally).

Early 90s for mainstream use and then they grew from there.

Ah, well I wasn't THAT far out - at least CDs existed in '84/5 in Japan
