They were like Blu Ray was a few years ago - very limited and being tested out :P

I don't know. In those days records hung around in the shops for years though, unless they were deleted, so I guess there was a mixture of sales.

 

CDs began in 1983 but only in Japan, they came over here a couple of years later, but CD-singles began around 1988 (and were 3" size originally).

CD single sales were incorporated into the charts in 1987 the first No 1 to have CD singles included in it was Whitney's "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" iirc.
