Niggas in Paris got to #5 I think (same as Starships, but not as much longevity ). It peaked at #2 on iTunes, but that thing called airplay. :drama:

No offnse, but you do realize the US charts have been like this since 2007/2008? I think it was probably surprising to people when SOS and Sexy Back got to #1. It shouldn't be surprising in the slightest anymore.

Before 2005, they didn't include digital downloads in the chart, so the US chart was basically just an airplay chart. Songs like Niggas in Paris would get to #1 easily, because pop, rhythmic and urban radio stations would all be playing the song at the same time, so those types of songs would peak really high in airplay, and therefore get to #1. However artists like Kelly Clarkson, Maroon 5, etc. would have lower peaks, but more longevity, because pop radio would play the song early, and then a few months later adult contemporary stations would start playing the song, and keep the song up the charts longer.

Now, it's the other way around. Songs like Niggas in Paris, The Motto, etc. got played on urban and rhythmic early, and pop radio only picked them up 3-4 months later. For example, The Motto by Drake only peaked at #14, but I think it's likely to finish in the year-end top 30. So now it's those artists that are in the position that Maroon 5, etc. were in back in 2004.

TBH I Don't follow the US chart at all for years now (although I used to before that). Airplay made me not following it in first place I think.

So I'm really behind with these new trends.

That's okay. The US charts are more like the 90's again, when songs like Believe and the Macarena were getting #1.

Another thing about 2004 was that Billboad (apparently) over-estimated the audience of rhythmic radio. Rhythmic radio plays a mixture of urban and dance music, so in 2004, that meant that songs such as Yeah! by Usher, Toxic by Britney Spears, Goodies by Ciara, Hey Ya! by Outkast, etc. were getting more chart success than they should've done.

But as I said earlier, after Billboard made digital downloads count to the chart, and changed the airplay, Rihanna singing over an electropop song from the 80's was able to get to #1, so things changed very quickly.

The UK charts would be just as ridiculous now if it was 90% determined by radio airplay.

It's good you don't to be honest as the charts have recently become frustratingly stagnant!

Also, I just realised Stooshe have a secnod version at #56 but it's 99p  Is it any different from the one currently at #6?

Edited by Envoirment

Wow. What happened to cause that?

I was going to say, it's probably weird here for a song to peak higher in the year-end chart than the weekly one, but I guess Love the Way You Lie did.

It just had an amazing chart run, it spent weeks going between #7 - #12, it just kept re-entering the top 10  It stayed in the top 75 for 33 weeks which at the time was an amazing feat. It sold over 700,000 copies as well IIRC.

I don't know, but at least it gives hope that Stooshe could hold up in the top 10 if they ever put the song back to 99p.

About the chart being stagnant, yes, it is annoying. I think radio is to blame the most. They just keep playing the same songs for months on end. Everytime I check the airplay chart, it seems to be practically the same as months ago. :drama: Also, streaming will obviously slow down the charts a bit aswell.

Perhaps it was like Make You Feel My Love, getting promotion from various places every few weeks boosting it back up the charts.

Turn Up The Love at #52. :D

Does anyone think 'Both Of Us' will make top 40 officially this week?

I don't think it will this week, but hopefully next week.

Turn Up the Love will be a Top 40 hit, espically as both Far East Movement and Cover Drive are top 10 artists this year.

How do you know for sure its going to be a top 40 hit, are you their manager

Payphone top version was briefly back up to 0.8 earlier looking at Kworb but now it's back down to 0.75 (second version 0.1868) - it hasn't made any significant progress on Spectrum yet all week but with the weekend effect kicking in soon it could very rapidly close the gap. Feeling more and more confident Florence + The Machine will get the #1 the longer they continue to hold M5 at ~90-95% combined though!

'Niggas In Paris' really benefiting from being re-playlisted on Radio 1, back up to #18 now. Shame 'No Church In The Wild' isn't looking likely to properly take off now but #37 is still a more than decent peak for how late in the campaign it was released.

Gotye looking likely to climb or non-move on Sunday, his top version is back up to #20 and I don't recall him having a version top 20 at any point last week.

 28. Both of Us (feat. Taylor Swift) - B.o.B

 46. Turn Up the Love (feat. Cover Drive) - Far East Movement

Both of these (no pun intended) are really starting to take off now after slow starts. Could both go top 40 next week. FEM would probably have totally bombed if TUTL featured anyone else, but the guaranteed Capital play from featuring Cover Drive is making it a minor hit as expected :P

'Mama Do The Hump' up to #30, really hope it re-enters the top 40 this week  Ben Howard up to #44 with 'The Fear' (also at 59p) too, could re-peak this week :cheer: (Previously peaked at #79). Not 59p but Major Lazer up to #50 with 'Get Free', top 40 next week? About time Major Lazer got a top 40 hit.

66. Medium Pimpin' - The Midnight Beast

I saw the first episode of their TV series the other day (well, my sister was watching it). Really funny show. Can't believe 'I Kicked A Shark In The Face' didn't do better than it did.

Of course not. I was making predictions.

Wouldn't be surprised if it sneaks in at #40 tbh

Pound The Alarm  #7, :cheer: its slowly getting there, she needs to release the video quickly! i hope it gets top 5.

370. fun. - Some Nights - Does anybody think it could be a big hit? I noticed it climbed into the top 10 on US iTunes.

359. Ian Carey & Rosette - Amnesia

369. Take That - Never Forget

^ I think these two are because of Radio 1.

Frank Ocean update:

40. No Church in the Wild

67. Thinkin Bout You

172. Pyramids

206. Swim Good

334. Novacane

439. Sweet Life

534. Super Rich Kids

569. Pink Matter

706. Bad Religion

793. Lost

 to all of them.

Maroon 5 pass F+TM on ITUNES...

30 hours to go... if they can't top the 10% until tomorrow she will be alright, this is going to be 1-2K lead anyway.

I'll be gutted for Florence if she doesnt get #1 on Sunday, if she doesn't it'd be by only a few thousand copies, and Payphone's already been #1!
Radio 1 play Amnesia so much, I thought it would be higher tbh even if radio play obviously doesn't always equal a hit.

I hope so  It's such an incredible grand song, that it would be criminal to miss the top 40 (let alone top 100!)
