Sad

The quality of his records may fluctuate over the decades, but there has never been any doubt that Elton John retains a keen ear for fashionable pop. So it is no surprise that he handed over tapes from his purple patch of the early ‘70s -- roughly Elton John through Blue Moves -- to the Australian dance duo Pnau, giving them full reign to sample, interpolate, splice and dice familiar tunes into new dance tracks. Such constructions are certainly not uncommon, but they’re usually not endorsed by the artist, and certainly whenever they are, they’re not as imaginative as Good Morning to the Night. Pnau never pledge allegiance to John’s melodies, and they cherry-pick lyrics from Bernie Taupin, choosing them based on the criteria of Elton’s phrasing, not Bernie’s imagery. Similarly, some familiar piano and guitar lines can be heard throughout, but never as full-blooded, recognizable riffs; they’re distant echoes of the original. Pnau cleverly evoke some of the spirit of Elton’s disco but it’s seen through the prism of the retro-disco that pervades certain elements of modern dance-pop. Nor do Pnau rely solely on glittery, satin-draped pop -- they also dip their toes into chilly meditative waters, giving this brief nine-track collection some nice moments of reflection. That Good Morning to the Night is not a hits-on-parade set -- a criticism that can even be laid at the feet of such acts as Girl Talk, let alone such mash-up albums as Beatles Love -- is a relief, and even if it’s not necessarily the kind of music that would make it into regular rotation, it’s inventive and fun, which is more than enough for a project like this. ¯ Stephen Thomas Erlewine - HMV

One More Night

Recorded in Los Angeles over the last year, Maroon 5 return with their highly anticipated fourth studio album 'Overexposed'. The new album is a rich, pop-infused collection featuring 10 new tracks. The album was executive produced by Max Martin with additional tracks produced by Benny Blanco and Ryan Tedder.

Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine said of the release, "'Overexposed' is definitely one of our most diverse and poppiest albums yet. We had a great time recording it".

Guitarist James Valentine added, "'Moves Like Jagger' was the first time we ever worked with an outside writer, so we decided to try it some more on this record. At this point in our career I think it was a good thing to completely mix up our process and it yielded good results, as well as a more collaborative spirit within the band. We wanted to make something that sounded contemporary with the elements of a lot of early eras of pop music. This is our most pop record ever and we weren't shy about really going for it."

Maroon 5's musicianship and frontman Adam Levine's vocals are as distinct as ever on 'Overexposed', continuing to showcase the band's ability for creating songs that have become part of the pop fabric. Maroon 5 began writing and recording the album during their most recent world tour and the resulting collection is chock-full of undeniable, anthemic melodies. The album includes such stand out tracks as the emphatic single 'Payphone' featuring Wiz Khalifa, the irresistible 'One More Night' and the rythmic ballad 'Beautiful Goodbye.' - HMV

You Can Call Me Al

With Graceland, Paul Simon hit on the idea of combining his always perceptive song writing with the little-heard mbaqanga music of South Africa, creating a fascinating hybrid that re-enchanted his old audience and earned him a new one. It is true that the South African angle (including its controversial aspect during the apartheid days) was a powerful marketing tool and that the catchy music succeeded in presenting listeners with that magical combination: something they'd never heard before that nevertheless sounded familiar.

As eclectic as any record Simon had made, it also delved into zydeco and conjunto-flavoured rock & roll while marking a surprising new lyrical approach (presaged on some songs on Hearts and Bones); for the most part, Simon abandoned a linear, narrative approach to his words, instead drawing highly poetic ("Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes"), abstract ("The Boy in the Bubble"), and satiric ("I Know What I Know") portraits of modern life, often charged by striking images and turns of phrase torn from the headlines or overheard in contemporary speech. An enormously successful record, Graceland became the standard against which subequent musical experiments by major artists were measured. - HMV

Turning Tables (Live)

'21' is the second album from singer-songwriter Adele, and like her first record, 2008's '19', it is named after the age Adele was when she wrote the album. Most of '21' was produced by Rick Rubin, who has worked with some of the biggest acts of the last 20 years, and Florence & The Machine producer Paul Epworth. Lyrically the album reflects Adele's increased maturity since '19', although it explores many of the same themes.

The Don

That's Nas' ex-wife Kelis' wedding dress on the cover: she's a fellow recording artist, the two have a son together, and she wasn't consulted about the album cover or the album itself. Life Is Good is that kind of album, and for the moment, Nas is that kind of guy. He may have recorded some game-changing albums early on, and his recent collaboration with Damian Marley, Distant Relatives, was vital as well, but this puff-chested bitch session is a completely different animal, coming off as Marvin Gaye's Here, My Dear, although this one prefers playing to radio over playing it as landmark disc, and prefers swaggering over staying on topic. Know that he's willing to take all the credit for his own Illmatic here, too, boasting that he's the best in the game before shooting insults at easy targets and his ex-wife/father-of-his-children, who never should have left because as "Roses" states, "I'm an ass magnet." This trashing without rebuttal is worth arguing about, and snarky and vicious aren't admirable qualities, so the best way to approach this unfiltered carpet bombing of love and marriage is thinking about how heartbreak can make a man go cold (808s & Heartbreak) or in this case, irresponsibly start fires. Well-funded fires, too, as Swizz Beatz's "On to the Next One" soundalike "Summer On Smash" gives Nas a bona fide club killer, and when it comes to headlines, that's the late Amy Winehouse on "Cherry Wine" in one of her last recordings -- on a track as intoxicating as its namesake. Don't let that vicious guy on the cover know that a woman also assists on the album's other truly rich moment, with Mary J. Blige in top form on "Reach Out," while Rick Ross winds up the album's top thug thanks to "Accident Murderers," a majestic street track with No I.D. on production and a reference to Illmatic's Jerome character, even when bringing that one up is sticky, seeing as Life Is Good isn't even in the same ballpark. Still, Nas doesn't seem to care, putting a Jim Jones-styled blast of boss talk called "Nasty" on the same album he pulls the heartstrings on with the well-written personal number "Daughters," but he sells it all, delivering everything here as if its classic status was assured and will never fall into an embarrassment trap, as long as the cover art isn't brought into the debate. If the game needed Illmatic, this is the one Nas needed to get out of his system, acting as a clearing house for all venom and bile, plus some gloss that doesn't fit but needed to go as well. ¯ David Jeffries - HMV

Gwon Elton, getting his first #1 album in over 20 years! Really surprised he hasn't had a #1 in the meantime, you'd think he's the sort of artist like Bruce Springsteen who's semi-guaranteed #1 with everything he releases, but no. It'll have really awful sales of course but at least it's #1 :P Not really familiar with Pnau but I know they're related to Empire Of The Sun who I really like so yay for them too.

Ugh at Maroon 5 climbing back to #2 but expected. Yay at Ed Sheeran going top 5 again and Adele back up to #7.

And big yay at Nas getting his first top 10 album :cheer: It's a bit odd as there's no reason for this to be so high when, for example, 'Distant Relatives' only got to #30, but I did expect this to go top 10.

Train re-peaking :o Weird chart run.

And Newton does fall out of the top 10 in the end after still being as high as #6 in the mids, I expect this to have a chart run every bit as awful as 'Electra Heart' if not worse.

Odd collaboration between the rapper and the country singer. and just like Nelly and Tim McGraw this doesn't work

Looks like Stooshe's second single will already outsell The Saturdays biggest seller.:(

Ouch @ Chris Brown out of the top 10 albums already. Weird how F.A.M.E went to #10 and stuck around the top 20 for weeks and yet Fortune looks like it'll plummet out of the top 40 in that time.

I'm glad Nas got a top 10 album, but he has an easier time peaking higher now becuase album sales are so low atm.

Black Heart.     And the music video is absolutely fantastic aswell! Exactly what music videos should be.

I never thought Elton John would get the #1 album, just amazed how Newton Faulkner tumbled down the chart.

Wow 7th uk album no1 for sir elton!!

Thanks to all them album chart people who compile the rundowns, im sure it takes ages and i was very excited to see elton johns and paul simons album chart histories, pity elton couldnt have added to his singles discography with sad edging into the singles top 40.great to see graceland at no4 i got it this week along with alabama shakes and lianne la havas albums!!

I listen to Breathe by Blu Cantrell like every day.

I love that track

Not quite a non-moving top 10 but it looks like it'll be exactly the same apart from 3/4 and 9/10 swapping.

Ugh at Chris re-overtaking will.i.am <_<

I listen to Breathe by Blu Cantrell like every day.

That's a fantastic song
