Not really! Love The Way You Lie was technically an album track.

I remember it entered at #7 when the album was released, but then it was made a single.

I remember it entered at #7 when the album was released, but then it was made a single.

They promoted the song as if it was a single in the end, but it never got an official release week or anything iirc. Like there was no single EP (like there is for Under the Sun this week).

It was released on CD, so it might have been.

That counts as a single release I think.

Not sure it was ever an official single?

It had a video which I imagine was quite expensive (do Megan Fox and Dominic Monaghan come cheap?), it'd be odd if it wasn't an official single.

Yes, but Adele's 'Set Fire to the Rain' didn't get a single/CD release either (or a music video for that matter), but we'd still consider it a single. I think being sent to radio officially is a sign of its selection as a single, that and there was a video for 'Love the Way You Lie'.
It had a video which I imagine was quite expensive (do Megan Fox and Dominic Monaghan come cheap?), it'd be odd if it wasn't an official single.

Guess so. Things can be confusing these days!

Super Bass also had an expensive-looking video too, but never got a single release I think.

In the download age, with post-album songs, you can promote them as if they're singles without actually releasing them as singles (if that makes sense).

Little Talks

Of Monsters and Men began as the solo project of Nanna Bryndís Hilmarsdóttir however it quickly grew with the additions of friends Ragnar “Raggi” Þórhallsson (co-singer/guitarist), Brynjar Leifsson (guitarist), Arnar Rósenkranz Hilmarsson (drummer), Árni Guðjónsson (piano/accordion player) and Kristján Páll Kristjánsson (bassist).

Crafting epic songs inspired by their amazing homeland, fairy tales and personal history, the band went from battle of the bands winners to the breakthrough act at this year's Iceland Airwaves and SXSW festival.

Of Monsters and Men continue to make waves among fans and tastemakers alike. 'My Head is an Animal' has already enjoyed huge success in Iceland and Europe. Mirroring that feat in America 'My Head is an Animal' entered the iTunes alternative chart at #1 and album chart at #2 however went on to top the album charts one week later. And in Germany the album debuted at #4 on their official album chart.

Album opener 'Dirty Paws' which will be the first single to be released in the UK on the 21st May, oscillates between chamber pop, raw art-rock and lusty harmonizing folk and is enjoying plays on 6 Music, BBC Radio 1 and Radio2. Elsewhere on the album campfire sing-alongs such as 'King and Lionheart' and 'Six Weeks' see Nanna's lustrous vocals take centre stage however it's when Nanna and Raggi launch into their extraordinary harmonies that the real magic happens.

Along with a penchant for crafting rising epic pop numbers 'My Head is an Animal' has beautifully delicate moments and signal a fully-fledged band destined to win the hearts of musical lovers worldwide. - HMV

None One

Elbow finally release the long awaited b-sides album: 'Dead In The Boot' which brings together b-sides and hard to find non-album tracks from the band's lengthy recording career.

The release tells an alternative elbow story beginning with the early years, with tracks like 'None One' from the original 'Newborn' EP in 2000, right up to 'Buffalo Ghosts' from last April's 'Open Arms'.

Mostly self produced, it was recording B-sides throughout the years that allowed the band to hone their studio skills which in turn led to Craig fully producing and mixing the band's last two albums 'The Seldom Seen Kid' and 'Build A Rocket Boys!'.

“The band have always loved B-side land and this is a collection of our favourites. None of our B-sides are album rejects. It's a different space, usually just post finishing an album when all the members of elbow are chiming and feeling very creative. This gives 'Dead In The Boot' a real late night vibe. My sister came up with the title after we released 'Asleep In The Back'. Some of these songs are the favourites we have ever written. It was important to us that this collection be an album in its own right so for some fans it may seem like there are glaring omissions, but these songs are the ones that hung together perfectly.” - Guy Garvey - HMV

Gold On The Ceiling

Reviewing The Black Keys' 2010 Top Ten breakthrough album Brothers, Rolling Stone called the duo "a two-man combo with a big-band mind." That description seems downright prophetic now. With the hard-rocking El Camino, The Black Keys' fourth Nonesuch release, guitarist-singer Dan Auerbach and drummer Patrick Carney conjure up an exhilarating, stadium-sized sound in collaboration with producer and friend Danger Mouse. El Camino boasts a no-nonsense brilliance: The pace is fast, the mood is upbeat, the choruses unfailingly addictive — made for shouting along, preferably in a large, sweaty crowd.

A band already at the top of its game has gotten even better. And The Black Keys have done pretty damn well so far this year, with three 2011 Grammy awards for Brothers under their belt, an MTV Video Music Award for "Tighten Up," more than 850,000 copies of Brothers sold in the U.S., and upwards of a million units worldwide (including over 100,00 in the UK),, plus innumerable licensing placements in film, TV, and commercials. El Camino features one stand-out track after another, such as first single "Lonely Boy," "Gold on the Ceiling," and the surprising, acoustic-guitar-driven, tempo-shifting "Little Black Submarines."

"This record is more straight ahead rock and roll — raw, driving, and back to basics," says Auerbach. As Carney has put it, The Black Keys "respect the past while being in the present," and that formula has made them sound like nothing less than the future of rock and roll. While the largely self-produced Brothers, recorded at the famed Muscle Shoals Studio in Alabama, had a more soul and blues-oriented sound, El Camino often recalls the blitzkrieg-paced British-style rock of the 1960s and 70s, post-Beatles and pre-punk: artists like T-Rex, The Sweet, and Gary Glitter, along with the heavier swing of such bands as Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath.

The references are there, but the sound is very much contemporary and utterly their own, equally informed by The Black Keys' passion for hip hop and R&B and bolstered by the atmospheric production approach of Danger Mouse (a.k.a. Brian Burton), who was behind the boards for 2008's Attack & Release and collaborated with them on the funky "Tighten Up" for Brothers. As Auerbach notes, "Brian understands all the different kinds of music we're into. He's got really great ideas about melody and song structure. For him it's all about the song." Also rejoining them is consistently innovative mixing engineer Tchad Blake, who Auerbach calls "a genius with audio, a complete wizard."

El Camino arrives just in time to serve as the ideal holiday gift for The Black Keys' rapidly growing fan base. It came together quickly in an unfettered burst of creativity by the hard-charging pair. They recorded these 11 tracks between tour dates for Brothers at Auerbach's new Easy Eye Studio in Nashville, where he and Carney have now relocated after years of working in their native Akron, Ohio. The duo plans to embark on a six week European Tour at the start of the New Year, with U.S. dates to follow shortly thereafter-including several arenas.

In a time of global austerity, The Black Keys work simply and efficiently, with a minimum of tools and a wealth of ideas, to produce the richest, fattest, coolest music around. Upon the release of Brothers last year, Britain's Uncut magazine called them "one of the best rock'n'roll bands on the planet," and El Camino, confirms that. - HMV

Ill Manors

This third album from London-based rapper Plan B is the soundtrack to his debut feature film of the same name, a gritty 'hip-hop musical' set on a brutal council estate, which he wrote and directed. Leaving behind the soul direction he took on 2010’s The Defamation of Strickland Banks, here he returns to the hard-edged, overtly political rap of his debut, dealing with the poverty, deprivation and alienation afflicting large segments of Britain’s youth. The title track was released as a single. - HMV
