I knew you were a man of taste :D

Well at least we've found the year's worst number one.

Nah, "Bom Bom" has it pretty much in the bag.

Even though I was listening (I was ironing at the same time though) what did Amelia say was gay? Must have missed it.

I'm not gay myself but I detest the way the word is used like that. I did it myself when I was younger and now cringe that I did. From a past Homophobia thread in the Lounge some of you may remember my attempts as a teacher to get kids to cut out use of the word. It happened this week too. One girl in my class described a task I set as 'gay' which prompted me to ask what was homosexual about it. She smiled and said she didn't mean to use the word gay. She probably won't use it like that again, at least in my presence.

Amelia is young and she may be used to talking like that with her mates, but she should have had stuff like that coached out of her. Even then, being in the spotlight she should be more conscious of what's coming out of her mouth. I hate things like 'she's only 17' being used as an excuse for things like this. You don't suddenly change at 21, you have to consciously get out of habits like that.

043 NE The xx 'Angels'

055 60 Labrinth 'Treatment'

099 NE Adele 'One and Only

100 NE The Script 'Six Degrees of Seperation'

Ach I would have preferred a bit higher for The Killers. :( Clearly me moving on from Brandon Flowers to Jeremy Renner has caused this :kink:

Yay for Amelia top 2 though

Good on you :D She said "that was so gay", ironically after Reggie had made her give a one word description of Johnny Robinson from last year's X Factor, who she described as "camp". It was clear that she wasn't bitching about him being gay (although she did also describe Marcus Collins as "funny") but you're right she should know better after a year in the industry.

Oh right. I did hear her describe Johnny as camp but I must have missed the gay bit. I knew it wouldn't have been malicious but still it shouldn't happen.

Personally I have no issue with people saying things are 'gay' (coming from a gay guy of course), mainly because when I was in school etc, it was the norm to use it as a casual insult (however I don't use it now of course). I can, however, see why other's would be offended by it, so it's probably best that it not be said!

Me saying Amelia's career was over was because this was her first single and I know some people ARE offended by the word being used in that context.

True. Some friends of mine who are gay even use it as an insult ironically-same as a redheaded friend who frequently makes fun of ginger people. A lot of gay people won't be bothered but it's something I try to stamp out of students-just in case they end up like poor Amelia and get crucified without realising she's offending anyone!

I've had a similar experience also being someone who isn't gay. A friend of mine who is of chinese origin gets very sensitive about race issues and naturally she's outraged whenever she encounters something that she considers racist yet all the time when she has to do something she doesn't want to she says 'its so gay I have to do that' etc. and she saw nothing wrong with it! I had a bit of argument with her but eventually she came around to see how hypocritical it was of her to act like that. A derogatory term is a derogatory term.
