Posted September 28, 201212 yr Just wondering about this earlier, as I was thinking that the likes of Owl City and fun. could possibly join this category. Obviously there are tons of one hit wonders but what about those who scored a hit, and then got another sizeable hit (let's say top 20) off the back of that with the 'halo effect', or for some other reason, and then for whatever reason never troubled the charts again. I've come up with these so far; Johnny Logan - Hold Me Now/What's Another Year Afroman - Because I Got High/Crazy Rap Eiffel 65 - Blue (Da Ba Dee)/Move Your Body Bob The Builder - Can We Fix It/Mambo No.5 What others are there?
September 28, 201212 yr fun. had better not be two hit wonders. Carry On is absolutely brilliant and up there with We Are Young and Some Nights
September 28, 201212 yr The Rasmus: In the Shadows #3 / Guilty #15 / everything else missed the top 40 I think. September: Cry for You #5 / Can't Get Over #14. Alex Day: Forever Yours #4 (it did sell 50k copies or sth in its 1 week in the top 100 ) / Lady Godiva #15 Edited September 28, 201212 yr by Marina Hurts
September 28, 201212 yr Christina Perri had the #4 'Jar of Hearts' and followed it up with 'A Thousand Years' (#32, 2011) - I certainly wouldn't class her as a one-hit wonder.
September 28, 201212 yr The Fray had a small hit with 'Over My Head' at #19 in 2007 then they had their big smash with 'How To Save A Life' at #4. A lead single from the next album went to #35 but I wouldn't say that was a "hit" as it sold next to nothing. Iyaz also had a #1 and #3 in 2010 then just scraped a #40 with the third single. :( Edited September 28, 201212 yr by shadow2009
September 28, 201212 yr Chesney Hawkes springs to mind. I'm A Man Not A Boy was the follow-up to The One And Only, and it got to Number 27, and then never troubled the Top 40 again. Shame, as I quite liked it!
September 28, 201212 yr The 411 - On My Knees/ Dumb both got to the top 4 - the follow ups bombed as did the album IIRC
September 28, 201212 yr La Roux had Bulletproof and In For The Kill, with I'm Not Your Toy getting top 30 and Quicksand doing nothing twice :(. They were absolutely huge though, with hopefully a massive new era in the works so it could be too early to judge after only one album.
September 28, 201212 yr One True Voice: Sacred Trust/After You're Gone #2 [2002] Shakespeare's Way With Words #10 [2003] Iio: Rapture #2 [2002] At The End #20 [2003] Geraldine: The Winners Song #2 [2009] Once Upon A Christmas Song #5 [2009] Eric Prydz: Call On Me #1 [2005] Pjanoo #2 [2008] Scatman John: Scatman #3 [1995] Scatman's World #10 [1995] Scarlet: Independent Love Song #12 [1995] I Wanna Be Free #21 [1995] Nick Berry: Every Loser Wins #1 [1987] Heartbeat #2 [1992] Craig McLachlan & Check 1-2: Mona #2 [1990] Amanda #19 [1990] Deee-Lite: Groove Is In The Heart #2 [1991] Power Of Love #25 [1991]
September 28, 201212 yr I suppose Lucie Silvas could be counted here. She got two top tens with What You're Made Of (#7, 2004) and Breathe In (#6, 2005), but singles #3 and #4 scraped the top 40 (The Game Is Won - #38 and Don't Look Back - #34), with any future singles missing the top 75. :(
September 28, 201212 yr Alexis Jordan: Happiness #3, Good Girl #6, Hush Hush #66 (I'm not counting the Sean Paul collaboration cos she was only a featured artist). Rednex: Cotton Eye Joe #1, Old Pop In An Oak #12, then missed the Top 40 Appleton: Fantasy #2, Don't Worry #5, Everything Eventually #38 LMFAO: Technically they're two hit wonders, as Party Rock Anthem & Sexy And I KNow It were Top 10 hits, but they haven't had any other Top 20 hits as lead artists. Kym Marsh: Cry #2, Come On Over #10, Sentimenal #35 Joe McElderry: The Climb #1, Ambitions #6, Someone Wake Me Up #68 Matt Cardle: When We Collide #1, Run For Your Life #6, then never troubled the Top 75 again The Ting Tings: That's Not My Name #1, Shut Up And Let Me Go #6, then no more Top 20 hits Alex Parks: Maybe That's What It Takes #3, Cry #13, Honesty #56 Kristian Leontiou: Story Of My Life #9, Shining #13, Some Say #54 That's the ones I can think of at the moment, I'm sure there are loads though. I guess the ultimate two hit wonder will be someone who's had two Number 1's, and then missed the Top 40 with any subsequent releases (or as close to two Number 1's as possible...)
September 28, 201212 yr I think the OP means a second top 20 hit, as in positions #11-#20 (hence 'sizable'), not a second top 10 hit.
September 28, 201212 yr Eric Prydz: Call On Me #1 [2005] Pjanoo #2 [2008] He's a three hit wonder - you forgot 'Proper Education' (Eric Prydz vs. Pink Floyd) which also got #2. His attempt at a fourth hit ('Niton (The Reason)') missed the top 40. I guess the ultimate two hit wonder will be someone who's had two Number 1's, and then missed the Top 40 with any subsequent releases (or as close to two Number 1's as possible...) Bob The Builder has 2 #1s and no other top 40 hits, unless you count Peter Kay's Animated All Star Band's 'The Official BBC Children In Need Medley' which he was sort of a member of in which case he had 3 #1s and no other top 40 hits :P Also with 3 #1s and no other top 40s are Robson & Jerome (only released 3 singles) and, so far, Rita Ora. September 28, 201212 yr I think the OP means a second top 20 hit, as in positions #11-#20 (hence 'sizable'), not a second top 10 hit. I don't think that's what the OP meant, as the first example they gave was Johnny Logan - Hold Me Now/What's Another Year, which made #1 and #2 respectively.
September 28, 201212 yr The 411 - On My Knees/ Dumb both got to the top 4 - the follow ups bombed as did the album IIRC Teardrops got to 23, if that counts as a 'hit'.
September 28, 201212 yr here's some I've thought up of using the definition top 20 = hit. Deadmau5: I Remember with Kaskade (#14) Ghosts N' Stuff feat. Rob Swire (#12) Cher Lloyd: Swagger Jagger (#1) With Ur Love feat. Mike Posner (#4) Mike Posner: Cooler Than Me (#5) With Ur Love with Cher Lloyd (#4) Avicii: (assuming that the definition of 'hit' is top 20, as I would personally call Silhouettes a hit even though it peaked at #22) Collide with Leona Lewis (#4) Levels (#4) Axwell: (as a solo artist) Feel The Vibe (Til' The Morning Comes) (#16) I Found You (#6) Tulisa: (as a solo artist) Young (#1) Live It Up feat. Tyga (#11)
September 28, 201212 yr Here's one from 2001: Spooks "Things I've Seen" was #6 in January 2001, then the follow-up "Karma Hotel" made #15 in April and since then just 1 other minor Top 75 hit. A two-hit wonder!
September 28, 201212 yr Alien Ant Farm - made #3 and #5 with their first 2 hits but then Attitude stalled at #66.
September 28, 201212 yr I'd argue Sum 41 - they had four further top 40 hits but does anyone apart from fans remember anything other than "Fat Lip" and "In Too Deep"?
