Hello, just wondering, what do you think of this, playing lyric videos on music channels?

'Skyfall' by Adele is getting some airplays as the lyric video for a little while. And seeing the latest TV airplay chart today, 'Diamonds' seems to have charted in the Top 30.

I personally don't mind the idea because it promotes the song a bit more rather than just being on radio. Though seeing lyrics on TV is weird.

p.s. Sorry, if this isn't very UK Chart related or something.

Definitely only if the video isn't available yet and only if they're going to remove it as soon as the video becomes available.
I think it's definitely a good idea. Often it's a lyrics video, sometimes it's also a live performance video. But it's far better to have something on TV allowing the song to be played, while they're waiting for the official video to get made.
O/T who started this trend? Everyone does it now, and it's a fairly 'new' thing isn't it?

The first lyric video I saw on TV was the one for Taylor Swift's WANEGBT, and I've never *seen* one since.

I don't have a problem with lyric videos on TV - it shows that there is popular demand for it.

They'll have a clean version...

But on topic of lyric videos... this is my favourite lyric video (which I would have loved to have seen on the TV)

That one is brilliant!! That's another reason why I think lyric videos should be shown on TV: they all seem to be set out really interestingly, some are better than normal music videos!

If they're creative and visually attractive such as the lyric videos for Skyfall and Payphone then yea of course it ahould be on TV!

I think it's a bad idea. If lyric videos get played on music channels, then who's gonna bother making a real video? Will labels keep on paying for their artists to make a video?

However I agree that the Katy Perry lyric video is good because it's creative, unlike most lyric videos consisting of lyrics simply scrolling with a picture in the background.

They are usually fan made ones. Official lyric videos are normally more interesting and complex than that.

The video being shown for 'Diamonds' isn't the lyric video. Its a quickly edited video of BTS from the last tour etc. It makes sense for them to be playing lyric videos though. I'm sure they wouldn't spend money on them for it to not go further than YouTube and VEVO.
It is good for the music channels, they have to compete with youtube ect somehow and having a chart countdown like 2 weeks ago where 2 of the top 4 songs (Adele and Rihanna) they couldn't play makes music T.V look redundant.
Definitely play them. Very annoying in the past when a chart countdown show would say "At number 40, a new entry by the Pet Shop Boys! Unfortunately we don't have a video, so instead here's 50 Cent at #39" (genuine and annoying example from a few years ago :P ). And yeah, some of the official ones are very inventive.

It's a no-brainier tbh, if there's a lyric video made, it should be played on TV (even if just filler on the chart shoes etc, I'm sick of them saying [insert artist here] hasn't made a video yet, onto the next one...). Any promotion is good promotion afterall!

Just realised that I said pretty much EXACTLY the same thing as the guy above.

Of course it's a good idea. I can only echo what others have posted. There have been occasions where the UK no. 1 hasn't had a video so it seems a bit strange when watching the UK Top 20 and they play all videos but the UK chart topper.

So I'm all for it. Plus there's something interesting about seeing lyric videos on the TV. I had a :D moment when I first saw Adele 'Skyfall' getting played on Bliss TV.

I think they'll still make official videos for most songs, as they still have an impact on the songs sales (and they make money from the VEVO views themselves aswell).

But it's good, since now a lot of songs get in the charts much earlier than the record label might anticipate. Or they want to promote different songs in different countries at different times, but they can only do one music video premiere, which they'll usually want to do along with the US release, so it's good if the countries that get it earlier can have something playing on MTV in place of it.

Not really - there was a George Michael song from the early 90s that was just a lyric video, they played in on The Hits a few years back. Can't remember for the life of me what song it was though.
