Posted November 21, 201212 yr So five of the top six biggest selling singles of 2012 in the UK premiered in 2011, Somebody That I Used To Know, We Are Young, Call Me Maybe, Titanium and Domino. This leads me to believe that we'll have already heard many of next year's huge smashes, and they're just waiting in the wings to explode. Anybody got any idea what they might be? Here are my main few tips for the top; Macklemore & Ryan Lewis feat Wanz - Thrift Shop QK8mJJJvaes White US rapper Macklemore brings a sax along for the ride which provides a very distinctive melodic hook. Already starting to smash in some countries and it'll obviously be huge here. Icona Pop feat Charli XCX - I Love It UxxajLWwzqY Surely a case of when and not if this anthemic edgy pop anthem from the Swedish female duo will blow up. Radio 1 will surely be all over it and it's a UK smash in the waiting. Burns - Lies (Otto Knows Mix) SSxAyWhcjWQ Brighton producer's new dance smash, added to the Radio 1 playlist earlier today and remixed by one of the latest hot prospects of the genre. Others from more established acts: > Flo Rida feat Georgi Kay - In My Mind (Part 2) > Girls Aloud - Beautiful Cause You Love Me > One Direction - Rock Me/Kiss You/I Would (any of these would be huge) > Rihanna feat Mikky Ekko - Stay/Rihanna feat David Guetta - Right Now > Little Mix - Change Your Life > Conor Maynard - Animal > Maroon 5 - Daylight > Devlin feat Diane Birch - Rewind > Calvin Harris feat Tinie Tempah - Drinking From The Bottle
November 21, 201212 yr Agree with Macklemore/Ryan Lewis. Gabrielle Aplin will probably get another big hit with 'Please Don't Say You Love Me'. Can't think beyond that and other established artists which are mostly covered by the first post! I imagine Phillip Phillips will eventually make some sort of impression in the UK, I gather he's a bit like an American one-man Mumford & Sons and 'Home' has been an absolutely massive hit in the USA, US hits rarely fail to cross over here unless they're country or hip-hop. Also Imagine Dragons! Edited November 21, 201212 yr by Bré
November 21, 201212 yr Not really related but I hope ARTPOP will be just as big as BTW. Can't wait for new music from Gaga. It could also lead to Azealia having more big hits next year, especially as she's featured on 2 tracks with Gaga!
November 21, 201212 yr As soon as I saw this thread I thought of Thrift Shop. Its surely gonna be January's big #1 hit. Not sure there's much else really (though thats obviously hard to say at this point). I do wonder why Lykke Li I Follow Rivers was never given a chance here, its was massive in Europe and given got to #2 in Ireland the other month but its probably too late for that now. As soon as I heard Battle Scars by Guy Sebastian I thought that could be big, its already the second best selling single in Australia by an Ozzie (behind Gotye) and I do hope it gets a push next year. Could MSK (old Sugababes) be big next year as well? (though thats not something we've heard yet)
November 21, 201212 yr Also Imagine Dragons!Yes! I really hope 'It's Time' can be as big as I am hoping it is going to be! It's so anthemic and I can see it doing something similar (not quite to the same level though) to 'We Are Young'. (I'm probably just getting this comparison just because they're both used on Glee and two of the best covers Glee have done )
November 22, 201212 yr I'd like to see that Icona Pop song blow up, but somehow I just don't see it ever doing anything. :(
November 22, 201212 yr As soon as I heard Battle Scars by Guy Sebastian I thought that could be big, its already the second best selling single in Australia by an Ozzie (behind Gotye) and I do hope it gets a push next year. I saw this at #11 in the US a few months ago on iTunes, but it's just disappeared since. I wonder if it's making a comeback. I came into this thread to mention Thrift Shop tbh, but it's already been mentioned. It's going to get to #1 in the US I think. I keep checking where it is on iTunes, and it's like how Niggas In Paris was last year, I'm hearing/seeing the song everywhere but it's only #625 on iTunes every time I check. I'm sure as soon as Radio 1 playlist it, it'll go top 10 (if Radio 1 don't playlist it, it might have success like The Motto, still massive but doesn't do anything in the charts). Also, Taylor Swift - I Knew You Were Trouble.
November 22, 201212 yr Leona Lewis - Glassheart RzPBQf2FglM I hope! Edited November 22, 201212 yr by Envoirment
November 22, 201212 yr I don't think I could take 'Thrift Shop' being huge, do not see the appeal at all. :( Imagine Dragons are a MUST though, after the success of Call Me Maybe & STIUTK I need one of my own BJSC entries to cross over to the public and smash.
November 22, 201212 yr i hope thrift shop is only big in australia and wherever else and it never sees the light of DAY here. charli xcx MUST surely be huge next year? CHVRCHES 'Lies' sounds like it will be a top 40 next year at some point too.
November 22, 201212 yr I think this year has been really musically dry which is probably why the end of year charts are looking so old.
November 22, 201212 yr What You've Done To Me could be huge if it's given a push, of course Samantha will just end up like Jessica Mauboy part II in that she could have been huge but never got even half a chance! And I'd say I agree with I Love It, Thrift Shop, Please Don't Say You Love Me and It's Time, plus I think Phillip Phillips will make an impact as Bray said, in fact I think he could be the biggest Idol winner over here since Jordin Sparks.
November 24, 201212 yr Thrift Shop is a lot of fun! Hope Kylie gets a bit huge next year with her new stuff.
November 24, 201212 yr First time I'd heard of 'Thrift Shop', rather good track actually. It's got comedic appeal, unique in the inclusion of saxophones mixed with rap; and a comic video to top it all off. Looking at it's Wiki page, it's peaked at #1 in New Zealand, #4 in Australia and #42 in the US - if the UK doesn't get to experience 'Thrift Shop', I'll be damned. Will have a listen to a few of the other suggestions, but I think Rudimental could well score another 'big' hit from their debut album. It's already been reported that they've recorded tracks with the likes of Angel Haze and Emeli Sande, so I'm sure either of those/another collaboration on the album will explode. Jessie J's second studio album could also produce another couple of big hits. I'm hoping she doesn't choose a stupid release method, releasing a track months about airplay has built up, only to follow the album release the week after; stinting the sales of both the lead single and the album itself. On the topic of Jessie J - she's featured on Daley's track 'Remember Me', which is pretty incredible. Scheduled for release on December 17th now, so I think it'll get mixed within all the Christmas week releases and hopefully climb in the new year (a la 'Do It Like a Dude'). Jessie J is also credited to a track called 'Louder' with Katy Perry - supposedly the soundtrack single for 'Step Up: Louder'. If the past Step Up soundtracks are anything to go by (Flo Rida mainly), it'll be a success.
November 24, 201212 yr ^ I agree, Remember Me is a serious tune. I love it. I hope it smashes. With regards to Step Up soundtracks, traditionally they've been bigger hits in the US than the UK (e.g. Get Up by Ciara, Give It Up to Me by Sean Paul/Keyshia Cole, Say Goodbye by Chris Brown, Hypnotized by Plies/Akon. I guess Club Can't Handle Me is the only exception there. The most recent one (Timbaland/Ne-Yo) flopped everywhere I think.
November 24, 201212 yr Agree on Guy Sebastian. It's his best shot at trying for an international hit.
