There's only going to be one HMV still standing in Northern Ireland, and that's the one in the city centre. Oh well, I guess one is better than none.

Am I right that there are no music retailers left in Northern Ireland, except for Belfast? I can't think of any.

I believe that there's two indie stores in Derry (one is called Cool Disks, I believe), but apart from that, it's incredibly Belfast-centric. Which is grand for me, but not for my brethren elsewhere in the north.

I'd have thought they would have kept at least one store in Edinburgh! Surprised it took them so long to offload the Kirkcaldy store, that town is a dive.

Glad Dundee is staying open. For now at least.

My most local store (Burton) is one of the 66. I remember Peter Andre officially opened this store in 2004.

Thankfully Derby is safe, for the time being at least.

Snap. I'll miss Bracknell's though as I often pop in there on the way to/from work. :( I agree with what you say about the staff though, I won't miss the big beardy guy. At least there's still Reading left, but it's not that convenient as I'm hardly ever there.

The "big beardy guy" seriously freaks me out. If I see him walking towards me I turn the other way  into the path of someone else asking me if I need any help or want a leaflet of their special offers.

Chief Exec who also drove Jessops into the ground has been 'made redundant' aka as the administrators saw him as a liability and harmful to the restructuring and rescue of the firm.
Aww the one in Braehead was really good :( but thankfully the one in my town is staying.

I am also gutted about the Braehead one, it is always really busy as well and is easily set out, always pop in when I am in Braehead. I don't see why they need to keep both of the HMV's and also the Fopp in town, when all are reasonably near each other. I find it strange that Edinburgh is left with none, whereas Glasgow has 3 within 10 minutes walk of each other.

I am somewhat shocked about the Edinburgh situation. Firstly I didn't realise they even had 5 but shutting them all is kind of curious. The whole thing is quite confusing though, it seems the closures are biaised towards the out of town shopping centres which are felt to have poached business away from the old town centres and were originally conceived in part as a solution to the high rents of town centres for companies, so you'd think they may be the more profitable sites. Also note all the "fort" location closures, Glasgow, Edinburgh and Birmingham wonder if its a deal with that particular landlord that s seeing them all shut or if being relatively new they are Universal sites they are offloading.

Sad to see Glasgow Fort go, really big and great sound system. Borders shut there a few years ago too, becoming less and less reasons to go. Both the City Centre are good so nice they are staying if surprising though Glasgows shopping district can totally support it. (2nd only to London in the UK).

Braehead I'll never see the love for and not overwhelmed by the silverburn store either though I will miss it when I'm there for other things

I see East Kilbride (another Glasgow OOT really) is keeping theirs though hurrah! Seems the few remaining mid size Scottish towns that have one are losing it though (Kirkcaldy, Dumfries and Falkirk)

The Edinburgh decision does seem very odd. It has been said that all five were losing money but that doesn't mean that they couldn't have made a profit by keeping two of them open.

This probably explains why Edinburgh is closing all the HMV shops.

On top of the list Edinburgh is #1

So they are still keeping both the Nottingham stores? Strange!

There's only been one for ages (unless either you're counting Fopp or one's appeared without me noticing!) in Vic Centre, the one just outside Broad Marsh has been a WH Smith for a while now and the old Virgin/Zavvi store has been empty for what feels like years!

My one in Chelmsford is safe. Grateful for small mercies etc.

Really?!!! I hadn't noticed that the Virgin one had gone! :D

Oh a local person :o

Mid size town makes Kirkcaldy sound a lot more civilised that it actually is.

I also didn't really Edinburgh had 5 stores. I had forgotten about the Gyle store but I can't believe the big Princes Street store is a goner.

Both of the stores in my city appear to be staying open then. I can't say I'm surprised considering how busy they both are, you can barely move for people most of the time!

Looking at the stores on the list and knowing their turnover etc, its clear that they are obviously being closed to make way for other retailers who have made bids for the locations as some of them are in prime locations and were in the Top 50 performing stores in the company - Clearly they will be taken over by a Morrisons/Tesco/Asda/Sainsburys!

Oi! I'm from Kirkcaldy lol

And you have internet access? Oh my. I think I may faint. I didn't realise Electricity had reached Central Fife yet! Judging by the people in the Mercat Centre running water still alludes the area though. Geldof may need to get involved. I say this as a person from the North East of the county where I am surrounded by farms, charity shops, takeaways, estate agents and fucking golf courses.

Seriously though, you have to admit the down is a dive. Even McDonalds left the town centre. If ever there was a sign that somewhere was beyond hope it is McDonalds leaving and Asda having to fit special anti-junkie lighting in it's toilets. Surprised HMV took so long to leave, can't imagine it would be a profitable store in the slightest.
