So about 30k this week, so album sales will be quite decent again if Biffy Clyro remain at #3 come Sunday.

What's cause The Fray to re enter with How To Shave Your Wife?

59p on iTunes :) Which is also why Nickleback could be re-entering with How You Remind Me this Sunday.

Thrift Shop should be looking at some nice juicy sales if it continues its domination of the itunes chart. 11,000 copes sold in the past 24 hours. Not bad at all.
Does anyone know why Jake Bugg's sales are up so much? He has just started his first major tour and Manic Kangaroo tells me that he was on Chris Evans' Breakfast Show on Monday but that doesn't seem to be enough to explain why he is selling well over twice as much as last week. It's not really an obvious Valentine's Day purchase either. Not that I'm complaining of course :D

Isn't it strange how the album chart is now more interesting and fast moving than the beloved singles chart. Virtually all the posts on this thread referring to album chart action. Maybe because the singles chart is a shadow of its former self. One new entry this week. Great variety there! Remember singles used to be promotion tools to sell albums. With so few new songs entering the charts no wonder the album sales are plummeting too. I do think they need to change the rules, at least ensure new material has a chance of charting. Maybe 59p songs should be excluded. My interest is certainly lessening chartwise.

Lets hope Jessie Ware can make top 40 this week and double the amount of new entries to that list!

The Chris Evans Breakfast Show is a massive opportunity for promotion, so I'm sure that most of his sales are coming form that.

I'm assuming it must be a tour boost, either that or people deciding to pick up the album now that 4 songs from the album have been released/being released as singles.

Going to see him live on Saturday. Looking forward to it, even though I'm still a little disappointed that he dropped out of an interview he was going to do with Queens Radio.

Shame about the interview :( He (or his management) must have decided he's above student radio now. I'll be seeing him myself towards the end of the month.

There's more talk about the albums chart on *this particular week* because it's an unusually dead week for the singles chart. There is usually far, far more discussion of the singles chart, there's just nothing about it to discuss this week.

And yes, excluding songs people are legitimately buying would be a fantastic move for the chart.

There has always been chart rules. So there is no harm in trying to come up with some that will enrich the singles chart and make it slightly more interesting whilst promoting more artists at the same time.

Chart rules exist only to create as level a playing field as possible- it must reflect what people are actually buying or it loses any merit it has in my opinion.

The lack of restrictions mean that the charts are now a more accurate reflection of what people are buying than they have ever been before.

The thing is, the singles charts is just supposed to be a sales chart. It's not a popularity chart, just a sales chart. If the same songs are selling for months on end, there's nothing they're going to do about it. It doesn't really matter if the charts are slow or "boring". It's not meant to be entertaining.

I do agree though, it's very unfortunate how slowly it moves (although really so far this year it hasn't been THAT slow, compared to this time in 2010-2012). It's boring to listen to the chart on Radio 1 sometimes. But January wasn't too bad imo, we had like 7 entries each week I think. But there's nothing we can do about it. Maybe for the Radio 1 show they have a recurrent rule, perhaps, but not for the official chart.

Even We Found Love and Moves Like Jagger are still getting played to millions of people every day thanks to Capital FM. They're never going to stop selling with that kind of promotion.

Its annoying at times to see old tracks back in the 40 though, when Marina & The Diamonds and the new track from Alicia Keys can't get inside the 40, people just buy the old tracks instead, surely they must have them in their record collection by now. Why would they want to listen to the tracks again. I think in the end it just boils down to lack of new releases when 10 years ago you had the likes of 9 to 13 new entries a week.

To add, just realised Stereophonics are probably just outside the 40 with Indian Summer, its a shame that the track could actually been top 40, if those 4 re-entries were no where to be seen.

Sorry... rant over. :(

Midweek Charts update: Les Miserables pushing for No1 return

Source: MW

by Paul Willams

The Les Miserables soundtrack could be heading back to the top of the UK artist albums chart this weekend after opening a narrow lead over The Courteeners and Biffy Clyro.

With their first album after leaving Polydor, The Courteneers began the week with the top-selling artist album as the V2/Cooperative Music-issued Anna led the midweeks, according to Official Charts Company data. However, they have now slipped to 2 to be replaced by Polydor's Les Miserables soundtrack. This ended a two-week run at No 1 last Sunday when it was succeeded by the 14th Floor/Warner Bros release Opposites by Biffy Clyro.

Virgin's Emeli Sande holds at 4 with Our Version Of Events as Jake Bugg's self-titled Mercury album gains a place to 5 with sales up 166%. Besides The Courteneers, two other acts have Top 10 new entries in the week so far with Atlantic's Frightened Rabbit at 7 with Pedestrian Verse and The Eels' V2/Cooperative album Wonderful Glorious arrives at 10.

Having just secured a third week at No 1 in the US, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis will compete a trans-Atlantic chart-topping double on Sunday with Thrift Shop featuring Wanz. The track, issued on the Macklemore label, leads the midweek singles chart by a hefty 28,000 sales based on trading up to the end of business on Thursday. It was No 2 on last weekend's chart. Behind Thrift Shop, the Island release White Noise by Disclosure with AlunaGeorge makes a swift 28-2 leap as Emeli Sande's Virgin single Clown climbs 8-3. Fall Out Boy's comeback Def Jam/Mercury single My Songs Know What You Did In The Dark is new at 4 in the week so far and Bingo Players' Ministry of Sound single Get Up (Rattle) drops to 5 having secured a second week at No 1 last Sunday.
