Seems I was looking at the US popbars  JT is still at the top, not Macklemore.

The bars near the top are still pretty close though :) And with so many entries (like MJF said) Bastille is in contention for #1 surely.

Get Sexy is actually modelled around Boom Boom Pow I'm afraid, so that's nothing to do with Lady Gaga. And the Sugababes released songs like Push the Button, Easy and Red Dress in the mid-00s, so they've always been doing electropop, and then About You Now, which is also pure electropop and sounded very similar to Hot N Cold by Katy Perry. And most of those songs are more dancey than the fluffy About A Girl (if I'm thinking of the correct song, I haven't heard it in about 3 years lol).

Girls Aloud were also constantly releasing electropop songs throughout their whole career too.

The electropop/dance-pop era started in 2006 when Maneater, SexyBack, SOS, My Love, Smack That, etc. were released and were all massive hits, even in the US, and then that paved the way for more electropop songs like Stronger, Ayo Technology, Don't Stop the Music, Gimme More, The Way I Are, etc. to come the year after.

Sorry, I wasn't claiming 'Get Sexy' was copying Lady GaGa - or that anyone was. I meant that GaGa's huge success in the US in late 2008 (as well as Katy Perry, I guess - but she was pop/rock with her first album bar HNC) really made Euro-pop blow up (I guess EuroPop is a more precise term than Electro-pop). The Sugababes' sound definitely turned more electro-pop in 2009 though. 'About A Girl' and 'Wear My Kiss' were even produced by GaGa's producer RedOne.

I think dance-pop/electro-pop has always been around but I think Euro-pop really blew up in 2009. David Guetta started to finally gain huge global success, Calvin Harris finally achieved his first #1. RedOne was man of the moment. Pitbull started becoming big. European artists such as Agnes found chart success in the UK.

I've always seen 2009 as the start of this new era in chart music.

Good choice! :D

I'm hoping some of these will find chart success:

Frank Ocean - Thinkin' Bout You / Bad Religion

The Smiths - There Is A Light That Never Goes Out

Christina Aguilera - You Lost Me

Beyonce - Broken-Hearted Girl

Kelly Clarkson - Already Gone

Leona Lewis - Here I Am

Solange - Losing You

Stevie Wonder - Redemption Song

I've only selected songs I can actually see being performed on the show.

YES PLEASE for Xtina, Kelly, Bey, Frank, Leona and Solange  Also totally agree with Dog Days Are Over, like Bre said that's surely due a huge One Day Like This boost before long?

I hope that Dog Days Are Over eventually makes it into the Top 20 one day as well. I still remember listening to it for the first time in December 2008.
DDAO is definitely due a 'One Day Like This' style boost in the (fairly) near future.

Surely 'Lungs' has sold way too much for that to ever happen?

You'll be surprised, I thought Emeli Sande had sold way too much for Clown to be a top 10 hit a few months ago, but how wrong I was. Only takes for it to be used on the right programme and Bob's your uncle.

Agreed with this, the change in the charts from 2008 to 2009 is remarkable - just take a look at the Now albums for proof. Xmas 2008's Now 71 has a huge amount of guitar/rock songs (Coldplay, Verve, Kid Rock, Kings of Leon, The Script, Razorlight, Ting Tings, Kaisers etc etc etc). Skip a year later to Now 74 and it's Fight for This Love, I Gotta Feeling, Sexy Chick, Bulletproof etc! Still a few rock songs on there (Sweet Disposition, Uprising, Just Say Yes) but even they're for the most part an endangered species by the 2010 albums.

It's funny because I found by 2008 the charts were sounding really tired with landfill indie, yet now in 2013 the Europop put-your-hands-in-the-air sound is starting to feel a bit stale...

I love how all indie that's more than five years old gets branded as "landfill indie" on here. :drama:

61. Song for DD (In Loving Memory of David Langton-Gilks) - Bigger Than Us

Anyone know who David Langton-Gilks was? R.I.P by the way.

Edit: He was a 16 year old boy who sadly died after battling cancer. :(

That's because that's the last time where landfill indie was a massive force in the chart. Just like how landfill dance was everywhere in 2010-12.

It's been given that term by nearly everyone since about 2007, when it started getting tiring. Really all it was, was pop with guitars anyway, thinking back (producing so many of my favourite tracks, mind).

I've never heard the term 'landfill dance' or anything similar before now though.

Well nobody really has a term for the dance THING anyway so I just made one up. I'm sure everyone will refer to the music from 2010-12 with some insulting term eventually.
