March 29, 201312 yr Crazy Frog - Axel F Tomcraft - Loneliness Blazin Squad - Crossroads Oasis - The Hindu Times Bob The Builder - Mambo No 5 Iron Maiden - Bring Your Daughter To The Slaughter (my birthday #1 ) None of these were a surprise at the time or in the weeks before. 'Your Woman' by White Town in 1997. Again, this was expected given the hype it had at the time.
March 29, 201312 yr Atomic Kitten - Whole Again. What, why, how, who, where, when? I really didn't see Cliff Richard's Millennium Prayer coming either...
March 29, 201312 yr Manic Street Preachers - Masses Against The Classes Oxide & Nutrino - Bound 4 Da Reload (Casualty) Roger Sanchez - Another Chance Rui Da Silva - Touch Me - I thought Steps or Fragma would of got it that week. Black Legend - You see The Trouble With Me
March 30, 201312 yr Author I would only really count those by new, or long-dormant artists, as there will be at least *some* expectation of success from a currently active, established artist.
March 30, 201312 yr I would only really count those by new, or long-dormant artists, as there will be at least *some* expectation of success from a currently active, established artist. If we use your criteria, 'Spectrum' wouldn't count and that was definitely out of the blue in every single way, shape or form.
March 30, 201312 yr Did anyone expect Kings Of Leon's Sex on Fire to go to #1? I didn't, it was such a shock for me at the time!
March 30, 201312 yr Did anyone expect Kings Of Leon's Sex on Fire to go to #1? I didn't, it was such a shock for me at the time! I thought it would be top 5, but I was a bit surprised how big it's iTunes lead was the day after it was released. So, perhaps one for this list, yes.
March 30, 201312 yr Manic Street Preachers - Masses Against The Classes Definitely this - it was a limited release and/or deleted the following week.
March 30, 201312 yr Definitely this - it was a limited release and/or deleted the following week. If I'm correct, it only went to #1 in the first place because Nicky Wire begged the 50,000-strong crowd at their New Year's Eve 1999 concert to go out and purchase the single in order to usurp Westlife from the top spot!
March 30, 201312 yr Another one for me was Jason Derulo-In My Head. I thought he was huge back then? But anyway, Spectrum is definitely the biggest out-of-the-blue #1 for a LONG time
March 30, 201312 yr Iron Maiden - Bring Your Daughter To The Slaughter (my birthday #1 ) None of these were a surprise at the time or in the weeks before. Again, this was expected given the hype it had at the time. This one in particular is a surprise to me. I cant believe it got into the top 40 let alone number 1, since you are able remember this what was the promotion, airplay etc like for this song at the time?
March 30, 201312 yr I thought he was huge back then? But anyway, Spectrum is definitely the biggest out-of-the-blue #1 for a LONG time But in that particular week he wasn't much of a contender at the time. Florence/Dizzie were expected to be no.1.
March 30, 201312 yr This one in particular is a surprise to me. I cant believe it got into the top 40 let alone number 1, since you are able remember this what was the promotion, airplay etc like for this song at the time? Oh, well I don't remember any airplay i'm afraid, but I recall it being released in a very quiet week on purpose and the fans were encouraged to buy it. Things were a bit different back then!
March 30, 201312 yr Pink- Just Like A Pill Blu Cantrell - Breathe both of these seemed to come completely out of nowhere to debut at Number 1 Edited March 30, 201312 yr by mango
March 30, 201312 yr Yeah, the surprise isn't that Jason Derulo had a Number One, it's that he had THAT Number One.
March 30, 201312 yr This one in particular is a surprise to me. I cant believe it got into the top 40 let alone number 1, since you are able remember this what was the promotion, airplay etc like for this song at the time? I can shed some light here. Yes it was released on Xmas eve in a week when virtually nothing else was released and was promoted with a range of limited edition covers which fans obviously bought multi purchased to get a set. In this way it was a pre cursor of the later 90s when marketing played a bigger part sometimes than the song itself, Iron Maiden had by 1990 got a reputation for debuting high then sliding down the charts quickly which is exactly what happened to BYDTTS and they were criticised by many in the business for this cynical marketing ploy which turned into mainstream practice in later years.
March 31, 201312 yr It was Iron Maiden's sixth consecutive Top 10 hit and the singles either side of it peaked at 3 and 2 as well. I guess they were also lucky that the Christmas Number One that year was 'Saviour's Day' by Cliff Richard, which would inevitably suffer a big sales crash after Boxing Day; not that Christmas songs plummeted as fast as they do in the download era but that was an especially unpopular one. They only lasted five weeks on the Top 75 which was at the time a record for a chart-topper, and I think it still is for a single that had a second week at the top. But I digress.
March 31, 201312 yr Sandi Thom 'If I Was A Punk Rocker (With Flowers In My Hair)'. I was only a casual music follower when this was released (i.e. watched most CD:UK's/TOTP/B4 on channel 4 and liked to think I was up to date etc..) but I definitely didn't see this one coming. I'm not sure what the airplay or hype surrounding it was, but when I first heard it I was like, WHAT?! WHO IS THIS?. I do wish it was 'What If I'm Right?' that had the success though. Shame. :(
